@@xenird they are enforced, just at the lowest priority possible, most likely discord will put adblockers on a higher priority than client modifications(unless client modifications just come pre built with adblockers, then they will be the same priority), overall if ads actually become a thing it could bring an immense amount of instability for modded client users even if the ads dont effect them.
Does anyone remember Skype? It's where people used to go to do voice calls and group conversations before Discord was a thing. Anyway, they added ads to their service just before it got completely abandoned by practically all its users. Must be a coincidence. No lessons to be learned from that.
Something about the RU-vid ads playing in Discord I find annoying: I have RU-vid premium. I have linked my RU-vid account to Discord. WHY AM I GETTING ADS
Direct playing embedded videos on Discord is literally using another browser that doesn't handle any cookies or simply don't use your RU-vid cookies on your main browser
I hope you guys remember the 7 year old video stating "There won't be ads on discord" and "Nitro is supporters" and "Things cost money we get it" with the food stand Wumpus was standing behind? Always was skeptical and now this is a reality. Discord *finally became the sellout they promised not to be* "Discord is no lit no fam whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy"
This is the kind of stuff that happens when something becomes so big that not only does it have to make itself worse to keep going, but doesn't leave room for any alternative that people can go to The old is dying, and the new struggle to be born
@@moonlightyegui6904 Except trees don't do that. Trees in the forests support one another and share nutrients through mycelium. The reason why some modern forests are struggling is because there are no big trees left, because we killed them. (That and we won't let them have wildfires to regulate themselves)
I do to, I want to move to Revolt but lots of discord servers I am in can't move to revolt bc of it being too new and has little security for servers right now...
remember when one of Discord's main selling points was that unlike Skype, they offered a down-to-earth messaging service without a cluttered UI and without ads?
10:45 'The second Discord goes public and is on the stock market is the second that you should lose any trust in Discord as a company'. What!!??!! Who on the planet had any trust in Discord as a company?
Every since they’ve been selling out, lowering free upload limit, I told myself I’d never buy nitro. They are making their site unusable to make people give into buying nitro, and I will never give them a CENT untill they change their ways.
In every video, you're slowly and consistently getting more unhinged. I love it. Those outro kisses never get old too. Also, I like the fact that you're shamelessly promoting Vencord (in which you've warned us that it violates Discord's TOS) since Discord doesn't pay attention to your concerns despite begging for so long. How neat!
That jab at ad servers being "heavily moderated" was spot on. I was the final owner of Advertise Your Server (AYS) a 80k server and we would have to ban probably 30+ bots a day and even then there were still really bad links and stuff getting through. I found the perfect way to stop the bots..... Close AYS forever! 😂 We realised we could never stop the bots and scammers so we cut them down at the source. Fun times!
I also didn't, but not because of sponsorblock. RU-vid offered me 2 months premium for free so I claimed that and cancelled it so they won't ever charge me.
These types of ad scams are useless on discord. You'd need to download something first for the ad to pop up in most websites which I doubt would happen on discord
And Skype's ads weren't even _that_ bad anyway. Just animated banners in otherwise empty sections of the UI. But it was still enough to piss a lot of people off.
@@VestedUTuber IT made loading times more annoying, was an eyesore, took up realestate for your chats, and friends list. While that part of the UI seemed "empty", some people like having larger UI elements, which the ADs ruined. A lot of Skype's userbase was also older, which means they likely needed to have alarger text, which made the ads that much more annoying.
@@infinitehexington sure it helps them become more stable, at the cost of their product becoming borderline unusable(which is what enshittification is)
@@cvpgame7267 bro you're scared of the client that a majority of people use, you're clearly one of those paranoid schizophrenic computer users that thinks everything is trying to hack you or be malware
11:44 Yep! July 31st, 2024. That’ll be a day I’ll never forget the inevitable. The thing I have about RU-vid embeds for Discord now doing ads was that I saw this coming way back on May 12th, 2023, when using the RU-vid Together activity. There was a fine print that read that you will get served ads when using the service. Heck, even back when this activity was in the works, news articles were giving you a heads up that the activity was going to be serving your ads. While the ads I got were pop-ups at first, I was dead right when I later came across an unskippable ad via RU-vid Together. I felt like I was warning my friends that soon this will be the norm for regular embeds and just like that it became true. I understand why RU-vid was doing this with the ongoing war with adblockers and their push to get everyone subscribed to premium, but dang it all, watching RU-vid videos via embeds was my way of watching stuff without the ads. Because of this, I considered myself done with embeds and would be better off watching the content on RU-vid.
Our whole life is nothing but a South Park episode, seriously. It’s just that bad now. Most of my friends are on discord and I’ll be damned if I have to sit through ads all the damn time, it’s bad enough with RU-vid that I’m spammed with “smelly feet powders” and crap cause my device has to sell me something.
I was surprised when I saw an ad play in the embedded video player. I never get ads on RU-vid because I have Premium (and also uBlock Origin), but on Discord I'd never seen the embedded player play any despite not being logged into my account. Actually, something cool that Discord could do, is allow you to use a linked RU-vid account to trigger RU-vid premium benefits somehow. My account is linked, so I'd just need a way for Discord to send my account info to RU-vid through the embed.
This is becoming so much of a problem that I can't wait until another program becomes available that pretty much replaces discord, so that me and my team can move over to that.
When they announced quests I started looking into open source alternatives, but it seemed like work to make the switch and then it seemed like quests would just be something I could ignore as long as nobody on my server was a tool. Well… now I’ve been getting pop up’s about it and if even more ads are coming it’s time to get off my ass and figure out how to actually set up one of those alternatives.
I'm pretty sure they know if you're using a modded client, so if they start desperately pushing ads onto people, then there's a chance they crack down on stuff like Vencord. The rate at which companies want to destroy themselves for profit is wild.
ah yes, we didnt need the join servers permission for you to be removed so people would stop being able to scam so easily! all we needed were MORE SCAMS SHOVED DOWN OUR THROATS!(ads are scams, you cannot deny that, think not? when a company puts all this money into making sure their face is plastered on every surface and screen imaginable, *how much money do you think is being put into the product itself?* )
I'll play devil's advocate just a little bit. Discord is a massive service with millions of users with quite a bit of functionality, that generally remains unhindered minus nitro features. The server costs are presumably getting progressively more expensive, ads make sense to me and it does not seem super ridiculous. We could still question the corporate policy of wanting more and more money, or privacy issues. But my point stands.
everyone called me crazy for not using the discord app- I insisted on using the browser for many years. Now that there are ads, I just use the adblock and perma-inspect element away the ads. Always stay one step ahead
Nearly all triple A game studios are Publicly traded, and are considered horrible. Except for Valve, which is private and is still the BEST triple A game studio ever, HALF LIFE 3 IS IN THE WORKS BABY!
@@NuchiAsakiOh, boo hoo, you have to agree not to spam them with baseless lawsuits. Steam is (and has been) the single best PC marketplace for many years.
@@zoekittenxvx5789 good luck, nobody's on revolt, that's the sad part, the vast majority of discord-like chat experience consumers are indeed on discord and the only popular servers on revolt are like catgirl or femboy servers (which is nice, for me at least, but nobody wants to start their community server on revolt...)
I do like the fact that they're trying to control the quality of the advertising but also doesn't the existance of youtube watch together immediately violate every single guideline on the advertising TOS?
10:45 'The second Discord goes public and is on the stock market is the second that you should lose any trust in Discord as a company'. What!!??!! Who on the planet had any trust in Discord as a company?

youtube gave up because they realized how utterly pointless it was, the thing is they didnt ban anyone from doing it because they knew that wouldve only made things even worse, discord will probably make that mistake and start banning people for using adblockers, which... will then just kill the platform, overall if they have any intelligence whatsoever they will learn from youtubes mistakes and just not touch client mods whatsoever.
If they can pull this off unlike Google with RU-vid, I will finally look for an alternative platform.. It would just be sad leaving behind some of my favorite communities if this were to happen.
Discord just making me wish someone would just streamline IRC's so we didn't have to put up with Discord. These many ads are not worth emotes or "high quality" streaming.
I do think it's kind of a bummer that you only get temporary rewards for participating in quests. Would be a lot cooler if they were permanent rewards imo, cause I actually think their quests system is pretty interesting already
