I struggle to understand this. To me it just seems like you can still have the name you want with a # and four numbers at the end but people can have their tag without numbers if it's unique. Seems like a lot of people agree with you so im interested to know why that is not a good option for you.
@CheeseMan2004

@@simmojosh71 The problem is that with the numbers system, you can have any name you want whether it's actually unique or not and not have to worry about it beyond that since discord adds the numbers automatically. With the @ system, even though the end result is the same in that your display name doesn't need to be unique, you need to put in the time and effort to make your username unique which is completely pointless when we already have a system that works.

@BoundlessNotch So then what's the point of unnecessarily wasting time and resources on moving from a system where this functionality is baked into the platform, to a system where this functionality is expected from the users? That's my entire problem with this change, it makes zero sense unless you look at it through a "change for the sake of change" lens. The old system is a strictly better version of the natural outcome of the new system, because that functionality is baked into the platform (positive for users) and can be readily monetised by the platform through selling the ability to choose the discriminator to the user (positive for the platform). It's not going to be easier for users to remember or share either, since users will need to remember the pseudo-discriminator or an alternative name. So what's the point?

I’ve been using Discord for years now and have many friends on there and am on many servers, and I can’t even think of a time where I’ve had to tell people what numbers are after my username or had to ask anyone for theirs. Once you’re in the system you can make friends directly, or I can IM them on another service, or text, and when having to tell someone in meatspace what my username is, I just ask them for their phone number at the same time so that copy-pasting is an option and I won’t friend anyone for whom I wouldn’t trust sharing my phone number with.

Like when you DM someone, you see their handle (without the extra numbers), so you can show DMs without de-anonymizing someone, but changing handles to be unique like this would make it so ever flashing your friends list or any DM screenshots would also be doxing someone's real handle.

We're looking at the beginning of the end for Discord. It's got too big for it's own good and by making changes such as this they leave room for similar platforms to pop up offering what Discord used to and communities will move to them. Being able to change your username is huge, especially in gaming where you have so many aliases that are not connected. Accounts, avatars, character names, screen names, gamer tags, all the different games and platforms, tag on social media and you've got a cluster of names you go by. Discord did a good job of bringing all the communities together in a way that made sense, allowing us to interact with them all on one platform while maintaining each respective alias. With this change, Discord will fade into obscurity, becoming a platform just used by those that stick around on it.

Yes while writing a message it makes sense because you want to ping that person. Anywhere else it'll just confuse the hell out of people who don't use twitter.

i mean i get why, there's a point in which you eventually reach User#9999 but this ain't the way to solve it also for the people going "oh no i can't remember my Discord Number" dude is literally in the bottom corner & you can copy it by accident

It's not that people can remember it, it's that people ignore it.

@@Jason9637 because you don't really need it anyway you either are joining Groups & talking with people there, or you send a DM that lets you add that person

Now instead of 10K people being able to have the same username, only one person can

There are 2 things I see here. Your display name is now completely different, this means - at least in screenshots - you can now enjoy better privacy than being 1 out of 10,000 users with potentially using this name and second, this also is written in their blog post, the username "Mike" may already be used by 10,000 people, therefore you can't register as Mike with any number handle. You could use a different font though, or a space after the name, etc. I really liked the name + tag system, sad it's going to go.

16:36 - "They've got 45 minutes of earned game time"... Am I glad that my parents never came up with such nonsensical rules, during my childhood... I had no time to game during school-weeks, thanks to tons of homework. My parents gave me carte blanch during weekends, to do whatever I wanted (besides some short home chores). Sure there where days where I gamed 14 or 16 hours in a row, then there where weeks where I didn't game at all. Forcing a kid to game on a preset daily screen-time schedule, sounds a lot more repetitive and thus addictive to me. PS: To parents: - No, the gaming didn't make me a violent gang-member. - Yes, I'm a self-sufficient adult in his early 30's. Who works as a software engineer, and owns his own house (on a mortgage). Guess I could've ended up somewhere worse...

Everyone had that one friend with the needlessly strict parents they resented for giving them little to no freedom. Parents need to understand that controlling every aspect of their child's life will only ever be detrimental to their relationship with them.

I'm confused by "all your individual chats are mixed in with servers". I've *never* seen that in the interface.
