Every feeling-every emotion-felt by man can be expressed through music. Can it be that while we have been immersed in this medium, we have been seduced and distracted to forget its power for good or evil? In 2019, James F. and L. Hannah Stoddard gave a fireside discussing how to analyze the emotions behind music, the teachings of the Presidents of the Church on rock music, and how music can strengthen or destroy the testimonies of our youth. We hope you enjoy "Discover Music: The Forgotten Language of the Heart."

Thank you for this! I have also changed what type of music I listen to and play in my home. Now, if I even turn on the radio I get physically ill. I had a terrible sinus infection a few years ago which made me so sick I couldn't even raise my head off the pillow. Nothing helped the pain EXCEPT to have a CD of the hymns playing softly in my room. That music calmed my mind. My spirit and my body enough that I was able to begin to get better. That taught me so much about the effects of music on the whole person. I loved your video with Nephi's Psalm.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I used to go to all the youth dances and was quite the dancer. I really got into the rock and disco music of the era. Over the years, as I've striven to get closer to the Lord, I've lost interest in that type of music and the dancing. However, I never understood the Satanic influences very well until this presentation. Now, I can see how the music contributed to my personal and spiritual struggles. Thank you for this information. When I was a missionary, in the early 80s, Lex de Azevedo was a councilor in the mission presidency. He talked to us of the difference between sacred and spiritual music and warned us to not follow after popular trends. You mentioned Elvis Presley, who has long been my favorite singer. I didn't know he had such a dark side. Where can I find more information on him, as you discussed? Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your experience and testimony! One resource to begin studying the darker side to Elvis Presley is the following video clip from the documentary, "They Sold Their Souls": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M813ZdDK4kE.html

Just two thoughts about the idea of how "the most famous or best composers etc. should be members of the Church"...first, I just think the idea of "being well-known" and "really being something" as ideas themselves is as worldly as the first ideas that are foundational to good versus evil--it's the nature of the gospel, and gospel living, I think, for individual members to be leaven and light and influence their own spheres and circles, but not to necessarily be some great thing unto themselves, while it's the Church, as a body of many individuals all together, that would be so well-known as to be "most influential" in the world's eyes--so it's the Church as a whole that God is pleased with, and it's the Church's influence with temple building and what the Church as a body of members is able to do to feed and clothe and comfort, that uplifts--while it's the world that says, like the people at the tower of Babel said, that it's important to "make a name for ourselves." So I just think that it's very understandable if the "silent majority," or whatever other terms get used to describe a certain entity, don't do things in a way that puts themselves or any particular person who's doing so well at this leavening and shining the light, on a scale that the world does, to attract the notice of people through "being some great one," like the celebrities in the media. (Anyone who is putting themselves out there to promote the idea of being some noticeable figure and getting the world to look at them etc. is really an anti-Christ, in that way of thinking, in trying to pull the focus in any way off of the world's population looking at Christ, and in really copying Christ in the way that we are to worship Him only.) I would probably usually sum things up in a generalizing way by saying that the people I have most known who are righteously going about doing their duty and loving God and their neighbor and being most useful and have been most available as instruments in the Lord's hands aren't people who are geared in any way toward being famous or "reaching the masses"--they're people who most likely are going to be left by the Lord in a particular place, doing a few particular things most often, and only some people will know who they are. And then the second thought is, it sounds great to say that we should get to a place where instead of "less good" figures being the famous ones and influencing all and sundry by their ideas, we need to figure out how to make it not just possible but actually happening, that better examples than that will be most well-known. But that's an outcome we can't necessarily be focused on most, since the reason these "less good" or evil people are so well-known is that the world as a whole ends up choosing that, and the world will choose to make those people famous. God tells us that relatively few people will actually choose eternal life and the presence of God; that's just reality. So it's just not a way that God operates to do anything that results automatically in good being vastly more chosen and desired than evil, when it comes to what's popular. But! If we do want to do things that can, among several outcomes, also result in a greater percentage of people being aware of good, so they can have the opportunity to choose it, and to then make that choice of good or best, it always comes back to the things God has already told us about how to spend our time--doing those things--the Lord's work, and His way--will lead us closer to that outcome. So whereas the world might spend its allotted time in a mortal existence composing music or creating movies that are most sensational or memorable or that use art in the most sophisticated constructs to create things that would be seen as belonging at the pinnacle of anything that's been created, all that stuff is just window dressing and usually, fundamentally, a distraction from the Lord and His work and glory...but those who choose the Lord would naturally choose to spend their allotted time in a mortal existence not looking too much at what's going on in other arenas other than focused on the Lord and His prophets, and instead of either absorbing the world's offerings of media or trying to beat them at it, they would just quietly go about caring for those in need, proclaiming the gospel, and uniting families for eternity. And so they will never be famous, not like those on RU-vid videos or those who spend their time creating great masterpieces. That's just never going to be the priority for them. ...But! When the Lord comes, and makes up His jewels, those people who spent their time doing His work will have been seen and will be known by God...and we are told that actually, they will be seen and known by anyone who has an interest in looking God's way, as God delights to honor those who honor Him...but we still can't expect the worldly to give that direction much of a look :)

Just sharing my notes from studying both videos. The later one (Let it Go) brings up., not only the danger in that one piece of music but a fallacy that is leading away entire generations of people from God's laws and design for us. We are all beset by temptations that continue because the enemy is persistent and has planted into our social fabric an idea that what we are persistently nagged with is part of ourselves-even when God has declared it to be sin. This song exemplifies the fallacy that surrendering to our temptations makes us free and is accepting who we really are...but it's denying who we really are. God's commands tell us how to be who we really are and what He forbids tells us who we are NOT. I love these videos and hope they can reach many. -+ For Love of a Princess: trembling, fear (in the chest) followed by deep longing and desire, heartache, feeling it in the gut behind my belly-button honestly, it taps into the feelings I have for my husband, times he's been gone, or when there's been grief experienced by one or both of us, as well as other more intimate feelings. I wouldn’t say purely physical, but mixed emotional feelings. Ultimately, I’m not sure how I feel about this. I associate it with grief. I'm not sure I would classify it as uplifting, I would call it heartfelt. Music can be used to express hard things and move through them, sometimes it can anchor us IN them. This song could be useful in expressing grief, but I'd be careful about returning to it over and over again as it could anchor you in it. Gettysburg courage, doing hard things, being committed and dedicated, feel it in my head and chest/upper back area, DEFINITELY uplifting, encouraging, something to play when working through something hard. Morning Ride the beginning feels like a strong upward movement like flying up or riding up a mountain, it's encouraging, uplifting and peaceful in the end it makes my head feel good, light in my mind, joyful in my heart definitely uplifting, a good one for a morning when you feel tired and want to stay in bed The Battle Ominous, dark, trouble brewing, intensifying, transitions to Heroic, courage to face the darkness, strength and honor against the evil Definitely uplifting and motivating More Than a Feeling Rebellious (it’s a feeling of yelling, the style of singing even has a more yelling tone) - what are we rebelling from? What is it departing from? What it is moving to? What is it moving from? Is it freeing? What is it freeing from? Appealing to unsanctified instincts of “what I want, what I think, what I feel, my way, my life, mine” not emphasizing doing what’s right, but doing what feels natural *Contrast. The importance of recognizing the difference between uplifting, encouraging, heartfelt and rebellious, angry, resentful. I honestly don’t recognize the negativity of some music without the contrast, it’s easy for me to get the Hark, Listen to the Trumpeters Peaceful and passionate in goodness, courage to do right-to fight the good fight, with love, courage, etc. Trouble comes, uncertainty arises, but peace and faith and light bring courage, love, and strength to fight with honor. Blues and Jazz stuff: Depressing, focussed on sadness, no hope, no joy, discouragement, etc. draws on the negative, pain, etc. no light, no faith, with a feeling like there’s some kind of twisted pleasure in it it glorifies the pain and darkness as it omits any light or joy *talented, very talented people BUT getting good at portraying darkness, sadness, depression, …. It’s like actors who want to get good at portraying the worst of humanity, not the heroes, the light bearers, the courageous and inspiring *There are super talented people, like Michael Jackson who’s talents were absolutely wasted on darkness and luring people into evil. Dancers who are incredibly talented but use it to inspire sensuality instead of greatness and beauty ***A good question for ANYTHING (not just music and movies): Does it inspire virtue and overcoming the natural man? My Kindness Shall Not Depart From Thee Sadness, but comfort and strength to rise up, gratitude, determination, courage, encouraging “things are hard, but there is hope” “hard things have happened, keep going” Let it Go It’s detaching from Christian values it’s a LIE that rebellion against God’s standards is freedom and power….whose power are we gaining or putting ourselves under, though? The natural man is an enemy, what is Satan? an enemy to God. What should be seeking freedom from? No right and wrong is freedom??? God’s law defines somethings as right or wrong, things that wet re tempted by, things that nag at us.. John 8:36 “If the therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” True Freedom comes in following Christ, not disregarding Him, not abandoning our faith and surrendering to our temptations. Not engaged in the fight anymore, is not freedom it’s accepting the bondage. No longer fighting against the chains may cause them to be felt less, but they are still there. If You Could Hie To Kolob It's a fight song. There is a spirit of rebellion, fighting against evil is necessary-vital- and the words speak of going to where God is... but we get there by surrendering to God and I don't think this spirit is what led Him to cleanse the temple, flood the earth, etc. We can only fight His battles with Him, in His way. Jesus is the Way. The Truth. The Life. Does this song fill me with determination to surrender to Him? Not really. I think it does make me feel a type of power, but it's not God's. I Love the Lord What a perfect way to end. A sincere declaration of love with a spirit of awe, determination, and worship.

I recently discovered the work of the Joseph Smith Foundation and I am amazed and utterly grateful! It is evident to me that the Lord's light and influence is in your work. Thank you! I wonder what you think about Nik Day, who is a full-time church employee who is over all of the youth music for each EFY/Youth Themed music? Most of his music is the perfect blend of rock music and a Christ-focused messaging. Curious what you think. I'm a seminary teacher and would very much like to know your thoughts. For example, Nik Day wrote this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jMNngnJ3u8w.html

sure miss this guy. HE LOOKS SO PROUD OF her. BYU has plenty of rowdy music concerts and at all the games. I think you can make anything seem bad. But seriously, kids are adding all that to Disney movies. I mean Cinderella has fairies. She throws the crown because she has been rejected so she says fine. and even your daughter's hair isn't tide up. those pressures were to push for females. she's saying be herself and that is those powers not to be ashamed of it just because its different. The music is great but I get they do hide in some of the movies. I don't care for that beat with that song but he is probably appealing to youth and some kids like that with church music with more beat maybe with a different song. do you know for like 20 years BYU plays this for conference and far more wild with the groovy lights thing. I was surprised. I didn't really like it but the women were dancing and loving it. I went to the rodeo in SL and Mormon tabernacle chior were standing and totally rocking out on the speaker music before the rodeo started. I think tribute to Joseph is a good album.

Oh my Goosh! this is way ridiculous. This is the mormon version of mainstream Christians calling everything satanic. But with a nicer tone. I'm sorry I can't listen to hymns in the gym, I ll stick to T pain and lmfo. If anything, the date when we celebrate Christmas is plagued with Roman mythology and paganism, but if none of that is on your motivation to celebrate Christmas on that date, you aren't doing anything wrong. So don't give hell for whatever the color the dress is, whatever the symbol you think is there or even whomever wrote the song. You know what helps our youth? calling everything they do evil even when nobody is doing it with that intention good Job.
