Discover the William A. Irvin Behind the Scenes 

I sailed as a deckhand on the Wm. A. Irvin in the summer of 1968.$3.40/hr. I also was on the Clemson and the Arthur Anderson (deckwatch and wiper, respectively). Never saw any ghosts! My favorite sailing time was when we passed by Macinaw Island and when we sailed the St. Mary's river to and from Sault St. Marie which is where the ships mail was collected. I was in the United Steel Workers union, local 5000. I saw the Edmund Fitzgerald a few times especially at south side Chicago. Once, on the Clemson, we hit a concrete abutment at the locks at Sault St. Marie and tore a huge gash about six feet above the water line. We were heading for Duluth, empty. The Coast Guard after inspecting the rip in our hull allowed us to continue across Lake Superior where we put in to Superior , Wisconson for repairs. We were there about a week. A state fair was happening in Superior and the evening I attended I saw two of the Three Stooges (Larry & Mo) and Herman's Hermits. Great memories!
