Vaxholm is one of the most famous places in the Stockholm archipelago, and it's sometimes nicknamed the capital of the archipelago. But where is there to do at Vaxholm? Come on and let's find out.

This video takes you on a tour through the town of Vaxholm, out to Bogesund with its lovely nature and Viking remnants, and I also visit the Vaxholm Fortress. Aside from showing you the most interesting spots in Vaxholm I also tell you about the history of the island and its neighbors, and of why Vaxholm has become such a famous tourist spot.
Kastellet, the Vaxholm Fortress, is a place where you can spend a whole day exploring - there's a restaurant, art galleries, a museum, and lots of activities. During my visit I tell you about the history of the fortress and I also show you the museum where you can learn all about Swedish defenses in the archipelago, from 1548 to today.
I also show you some restaurants and cafes you can enjoy in Vaxholm town, and discuss various activities you can partake in. For example, Skypark Vaxholm, or why not an archaeological hike where you learn about Viking history?
Aside from sailing and kayaking and a lot of watersports, people also enjoy renting a bike to explore Bogesundslandet, with the Bogesund Castle and its nature preserve. Bogesund Castle is well worth a visit for its unique architecture and fascinating history.
The video is also sprinkled with practical tips and costs of various things - as well as small recommendations for places to go and things to do. All to prepare you in case you also want to explore the capital of the Stockholm archipelago!

It's always a hoot to have your hometown showcased by a good presenter who actually knows a bit about the place. I used to hate being ferry-dependant to get anywhere, and it wasn't until long after I'd moved away from the area that I realised just how nice it was. The grass isn't always greener (:

Oh wow, it must have been amazing to grow up out there. But it must also have felt so far away from everything that happens in the city :D It's such a pity that one can't combine all the good aspects of each place into a single spot :)

Bogesunds's slott is interesting to have a wander around inside. As the family that owned it ran out of cash over the centuries they shrunk how much of it they lived in, so the decorations get older the further up you go inside the building. A ferry used to stop close by, not sure if it still does. Though, the Vaxholm ferry does still stop at the end of Karlsudd, about 3-4km away. You can walk the length of Karlsudd and check out all of the expensive houses (I lived on there for 18 years before it went mad - there are some insane houses on there now - one that goes 4 floors up and 4 floors down into the granite that cost over 130 million SEK to build 15 years ago). There are some nice south facing sandy and rocky beaches to hang out on during a sunny day at the Bogesund end of Karlsudd. There used to be a really nice cafe inside one of the castle's old out buildings - not sure if it's still there - great place to hang on a Sunday morning - it used to have a big toy box so little kids could amuse themselves as you read the paper. There's some interesting history on Karlsudd. Apparently, the last person to be hanged in Sweden was caught there. Also, weird, ghostly phenomena used to happen in the houses on the far end of Karlsudd, including in my place. No idea what caused it. We got used to it. Keys would go missing, and when you went looking for them, after a few minutes of searching they'd drop in front of you - apparently out of thin air. Happened to me and my next door neighbour a few times. Flowers would jump out of vases. And the kettle would switch itself on and off. Odd. There are some spectacular walks on Bogesund - I blasted all over it on a mountain bike. There's a spot down behind the castle where the trees are so huge that it feels like standing inside a cathedral. Oh, and there's a crashed fifties fighter jet in the water off the end of Karlsudd. A fun restaurant on an island nearby called Getfoten. And next to that, there's an island that used to be owned by the navy. It's where they would unload and store their munitions before sailing into Stockholm. It's now deserted, no houses on it. Birds are so used to being undisturbed there that they nest on the ground. It's like some kind of poor man's Galapagos. I used to camp on it with the kids a few times each summer when they were small. A few minutes by boat from the house, but it felt like an adventure into the unknown. A company set up some glamping tents at one end just before I moved away, don't know if they're still there. You could spend weeks uncovering all kinds of cool stuff in and around Vaxholm. I now live in Mariefred, which is even cooler and has even more weird and wonderful stuff to discover. It is an insanely gorgeous part of the planet that almost no one knows about.

Another great video. You have a talent. I really enjoyed this one about Vaxholm. I find history and content about current changes in Sweden very interesting. When I was there in June and July I was amazed at how many electric vehicles (EV'S) there are in Sweden now.
@ThreeStarVagabond
@ThreeStarVagabond 10 месяцев назад
Thank you, really appreciate it :D I guess the whole world is changing pretty rapidly these days in one way or another, but yes - EVs are really popular in Sweden these days. Except up north, where the distances are too great. I don't really think they're as popular yet up there...

Me and my sister visited Stockholm last week for the first time and had a great time! We really enjoyed taking the SJ Ferries for basically free since we got a 7 Day Public Transport ticket anyway and the views were lovely. Unfortunately we only ever found the 80 going to Ropsten, would have loved to find some other SJ Ferries going in different directions and around different islands but most boats we found had an extra fee :(
@ThreeStarVagabond
@ThreeStarVagabond 10 месяцев назад
That's so nice to hear! But yeah unfortunately many of the boats further out are run by private companies, and it's hard to find the public transport ones. It really requires people to know about transportation options in advance. Still, happy that you had a good time!

Vagabond, Vaxholm is beautiful. It is old and very mysterious. Is it hunted? Has anyone stayed at night? Is it true some ghosts wonder around even at day time?

It´ll be too cold for that when I get to Sweden, but I´m still going to have fun. I´m hanging out with a couple old friends from my "heavy metal" days when I was much younger.

Vaxholm looked like there was quite a bit to do for being a small town. When we were in Stockholm we went to our friends summer house in Sodermoja, that’s where I fell in Love with the archipelagos, it was so beautiful and the biggest surprise was the water is brackish. Thank You for another informative video. Stay safe till next time

Wow, I'm not sure if I've ever been out there myself yet! There are so many islands in the archipelago, and so little time to visit them all... But thank you, and yeah I really like going to places like Vaxholm (and other spots) whenever I can. Cheers, and have a great one :D

For a small place, it looks like there's so much to do! And I'd have to go on a Saturday...to be sure I could attend a licorice tasting! It looks like the last day of summer was the perfect day to visit 😀

It really is a nice spot with a lot of things to see and do. I talked to the chocolate store owner and they arrange tastings other days too if time permits 😊 Haha I'm happy that I managed to get out there that weekend despite going to a geek club the night before. A wee bit tired that morning 😅

I wished I saw this video before I visited, a few months ago. The ferry ride from Stockholm was great, and the fortress and museum were nice, but I didn't do much around the actual town. I would've liked to have visited the trails and do a bit of hiking. Anyway, fun video, and brings back nice memories from earlier in the summer.

En trevlig presentation, men för utlänningar är det nog svårt att uppfatta de svenska namnen. Du skulle vid redigeringen kunna lägga in namnen som text i bilderna.
