When I was a kid in the '50s my family vacationed at my grandparents cabins on Big Portage Lake. We would get out supplies at the Tackle Box where they had a cooler in front of the store to display the catch of the day - the biggest fish caught that day. We would always stop for ice cream at the Dairy Maid and go to the High Hat for lunch. My grandfather would always stop at Barney's Bar for a cold one when he went to town. We would shop at the Red Owl store there. My grandparents cabins were built in the '30s and we went every year plus the men would go up in the winter for deer hunting. No electricity, no running water, no TV.- out houses, ice boxes, water hand pumps, oil stoves for heating and Coleman lanterns for light. A paradise indeed and I have so many fond memories from those wonderful days of my youth spent in that magical place. My dad was a pilot and one year we flew into the airport at the Gateway Inn.
