Wow, this was SO informative!!! I loved the quiz, and wasn’t surprised I scored high on the Charlotte Mason/Unschooling approaches, which is definitely how our homeschool functions. We’re on a homestead, so my husband and I really appreciate that a lot of the learning our children do is outside on their own as they climb trees, explore nature, and spend time with our animals, but we love the SCM materials because they keep us focused on the learning that needs to be done- in short and interesting lessons and with a focus on character development. Thank you, Sonya, for this detailed, unbiased, and succinct overview on all the methods out there. I’m sharing this with all the new homeschooling Moms I know.

There are others as well, like Waldorf. But I feel the 5 she discusses were a fair cross section of the main homeschooling options.
@elizabethbrown504

I wonder why you chose some curricula to include on the list and not others. Ambleside Online, Charlotte Mason Institute, A Modern Charlotte Mason, A Delectable Education, Sabbathmood Homeschool, Charlotte Mason Plenary, Wildwood Curriculum are well known CM options. I believe Bookshark and Build your Library are CM inspired. They definitely include living books and narration and spear dig the feast. The Good and the Beautiful combines Charlotte Mason and Traditional. Wayfarers is a Classical Charlotte Mason hybrid. I wonder where Waldorf would fall-Waldorf Essentials, Live Education, and Lavender's Blue Homeschool. It does use block scheduling and lessons are integrated, so perhaps closer to Unit Studies? But it also uses living books and narration-at first summary and then narration begins in grade 3. The first 3 years are focussed on foundational academic skills and then the subjects are added in grades 4 and up. It's very focussed on developmental concerns, so certainly more growth oriented, but more doing than CM. those early years on up also include more movement exercises than CM many of which DD has done in OT. Maybe unit studies and Charlotte Mason I wonder where Montessori would fall. in elementary the teacher or guide tells a series of stories to inspire the curiosity of the students and they do research and projects from there. there is a semi-sequential set of Math materials and some language arts that's required. No textbooks. Maybe it would be close to unschooling or unit studies or a blend of these 2? The definitely involve a lot of doing and there is a curriculum the teacher guides the students through, but the order they do things in has some flexibility. TJED and the Sudbury school are democratic methods of education. Sudbury is very much in line with unschooling. I don't know a lit about TJEd but I know it involves teachers as mentors and guides and is student interest inspired. I find it valuable to note that Classical is actually a label shared by 2 methods, Neo-classical made popular by Dorothy Sayers and the Trivium. And Ancient which emphasizes Socratic method and rhetoric. And Classical Conversations is classical in name but misses the heart of either int eh same way that Masterbooks calls itself Charlotte Mason because it uses narrative to teach math. They both borrow elements from the methods they espouse to be, but miss the mark.

@@Volkfire Charlotte Mason Method isn't religious, no method is. Philosophy y can be-CM was Anglican, Montessori was Catholic with Hindu influence, Steiner was an anthroposophist and their religion seeps through because its part of who they are, but they aren't preaching it. The curricula vary, . Wildwood Curriculum advertises them selves as secular. I couldn't say about the others.

I think I have been doing a little bit of everything altogether all this time without me knowing how they are called. Hahaha This is ssssuupppeeerrr helpful for me, I have a toddler he jumps from one topic to another, yet he wants to do something about each one. He also wants to kinda memorize them like the days of week, months, planets. He seems to sometimes want to narrate about them (even if he cannot say so much just yet), he wants to find (hence, I try hard to make them - no choice haha) coloring books or pictures about the topics he is interested in. Reciting or enumerating them does not seem to satisfy him. He wants to sometimes go outside just to see how the moon or starts really look like. So sometimes, I really want to think he leads the topics and pacing of learning as of now yet he wants a whhhooollle lot of variety.

Thanks so much for another great video. I appreciate how neutral you are to the various “flavors” of homeschooling. I have one suggestion to improve the quiz: I noticed that there were more answers that would lead to more T's (7) vs Unit (4) or even Living or Unschooling (5 each). A more balanced quiz should probably lead to an even amount of potential answers to each of the 5 flavors. Other than that, I love your videos. They have been so beneficial.

One of the most important aspects of Classical Style, which you missed mentioning, is that the parents spend a couple hours each day READING TO ALL THE CHILDREN. So, in the bagpipes example, not only would the young children be memorizing rote facts about bagpipes, they would also be listening to Mom (or Dad) read books that talk about bagpipes.

Thank you! That was just what I was looking for. I do have a question though: is it possible to homeschool while still sending your child to school? As in when, for social acceptability and because of college requirements, you have to send your child to school, but you are dissatisfied with what's being taught and how it's getting taught?

I have a question about the book of centuries. I watched your video on them, but didn't see which century to start with. You did mention BC, but how far back do we go?
@SimplyCharlotteMason
@SimplyCharlotteMason 3 года назад
We start our Book of Centuries resources at Creation, then move forward from there. In the early BC centuries there is less to record, but as you get into time periods around Ancient Egypt where we have better dates, there is more to enter. Our Basic Book of Centuries free download starts at 4000 BC, based on the dates in Ussher's Annals of the World. The My Book of Centuries book starts a Creation - 3001 BC.

I would greatly disagree with the mom who told you about unschooling. That's just not true. Unschooling is about teaching and training your child HOW to find answers to their questions and help them understand the process of gaining the information they need just as an adult would find information to learn. Unschoolers are not against curriculum. It depends on what your child is trying to do and if they determine curriculum or an instructor is necessary to achieve what they're trying to achieve. The parent is considered a resource manager along with strewing (sprinkling in what the parent would like to expose the child to).
@fortusvictus8297
@fortusvictus8297 2 года назад
Yeah, it is hard to do a 'test' of styles. It's like classical, people think it's all quizzes and grilling but in reality, it is about learning how to research when young and manipulate ideas in the teen/young adult years. There is a reason so many of the Enlightenment era thinkers were classically trained and sought classical education for their children.
