When you use emphasis in a sentence, it helps the listener understand your intent. Same goes for music. AND it helps YOU play the piece better! Watch and see what I mean. It makes all the difference

I wish my professors had been more like you. I’ve left music because almost every time I would try to give my interpretation of a piece, it was met with, “That’s not the *right* way to play this.”

This made so much more sense to me than any other interpretation of this piece I’ve heard. I really wish classical cats would get proper (or in some cases, any) improvisation and applied theory education in school, to give them agency away from just being a composer’s tool or a sheet-reading machine. I had to do that for myself after a couple degrees, anyway, and the payoff has been significant.

I play clarinet and saxophone as an hobby (clarinet for the past 15 years, saxophone started this year) and what you just described is what I learned alone just because I thought it was fun to play around with the music. I just started doing it and now it's super useful. The way people/schools teach sometimes is not the best. Learning alone has it's good and bad sides, but if you are creative enough you learn cool stuff that you did not even know it is this useful.

"The Dark Arts of the Clarinet"... thank-you for that, professor. Re-beaming has saved me too many times to count when learning a new piece on a time crunch, and it's a great reminder to come back to the things we've done before for a fresh perspective. Great insights here!

You are a fabulous teacher! Love your command of language and meter. This piece is way beyond me, I’m just a beginner, but I loved all the work you put into this video. I was fascinated and drawn in, thank you, who ever and where ever you are, great presentation. I wonder, can this piece be played on the Bb clarinet? Putnam.
@earspasm
@earspasm Год назад
Yes! You can play it on Bb - Stravinsky won’t mind.

love watching your videos, I learn so much! any suggestions for a good intermediate clarinet method book? I am re-learning clarinet (have a backun cocobolo protege clarinet so playing on a good quality instrument) and want to really be able to play semi-professionally (locally, not replacing my day job for sure) in the next 5-7 years. thank you so much! keep putting out videos please!! :-)

L’Histoire and the Three pieces are connected. The amateur clarinetist Werner Reinhart bankrolled the premier of L’Histoire and was the recipient of the Three Pieces

I have a bit of trouble with the dynamic range on these vids - clarinet is one level, speech basically inaudible at the the same playback level (for me on this device). Could do with ironing out a bit

Maybe it's phase cancellation? It can happen on a mono device.

I know you've talked about your opinion on ligatures before (and I agree), but I was wondering if you could do a video about the Bois Excellente ligature for bass clarinet. I was directed to it after looking for something similar to the Jody Jazz Power Ring for Saxophone. Out of any videos on ligatures I've seen, the Power Ring is the only one that has an actual affect on the sound, and I find it quite noticable, so I'd like something similar on bass clarinet. The only issue is I can't find any video demos of it online. Thanks :D

2 questions.1) What is a "bad ass" piece? (I'm Scottish so don't know these clever phrases). 2) Where is you get your T-shirt from?

Hi there earspasm, could you make a video comparing different clarinet barrels from cheap to expensive? I've always wondered if getting a barrel would actually affect my tone drastically, and I'm wondering if I should make the investment. If you can't, could you just tell me an answer just straight up replying to the comment?

Cool. Like with the human voice, music needs to sound natural and more vibrant than just speaking or playing at mezzo forte all the time. I guess that is what I like about lyrical pieces: the phrasing. To me, the lower registers on the clarinet and bass clarinet speak to me; I love the lower registers.
