This is a little late but I’ve read some comments talking about how the Erdtree is maybe not what it looks like to us but much more like the erdtree avatar enemies. I work as an arborist and wanted to add that when a tree is really struggling it will produce offshoots near the base of it to compensate as a last resort thing. I think that the minor erdtrees are these offshoots that occur when trees are dying. In real trees they appear as saplings near the root system of the tree. I’m not sure if it has been brought up before or what that might entail lore wise but maybe it can lead you to something cool.

I'm late to this, as I'm just now working my way through these videos, but it seems to me this could tie to the importance of the first burning of the Erdtree. If Erdtree burial was an important aspect of the cycle of life, maybe the reason it was burned was to cause the minor erdtrees to grow. Spreading the root system to be more accessible. Maybe the first burning fundamentally changed the structure of the root system to be broader and more robust while still being part of the same... system. This also contextualizes the conflict between the Erdtree and the Rot. They are competing biological systems. One is a tree that absorbs dead humans and grows new humans, and the other is a fungus that eats living tissue but eventually blooms explosively with the potential to spawn many humans.

well, isn't it said that GRRM wrote much of the history and world design? that would explain why the lore that The Tarnished Archaeologist covers is so consistent. Meanwhile, i would bet that much of the plant imagery, characters, outer gods, dynamics, vague foreign lands, and "recent occurances" (such as the Night of the Black Knives, or the slaying of the rot god) are what Miyazaki wrote. After all, those bits of lore cover just about as much ground as the lores of dark souls and bloodborne, and their somewhat lack of consistency (no offense to miyazaki) seems more true to traditional fromsoft storytelling.

If I remember correctly, he said in a interview that his job with Elden Ring was done years before we even got any relevant news about the game and I think Miyazaki said in another interview that he often sent pictures to GRRM of how his characters were turned into monsters, which makes me think that he never imagined something like serpent Rykard or the monstrosity that is Godrick when he wrote the story.

Since the video didn't explicitly mention it: the Haligtree also has loads of human-sized cocoons all over the place, so even if it was just testing for his own metamorphosis Miquella definitely was experimenting with a form of "rebirth" involving adult humanoids.

Specifically, when looking close at the cocoons, you can see that the bodies within are all first generation albinaurics. The Haligtree is mentioned as a promised land for the albinaurics, and this rebirthing process makes it all the more so, given that albinaurics are prone to degeneration in their natural (rather, unnatural) bodies.

I always wondered why Marika's bed is so large considering her in-game design. It would also explain, if nothing else, how Ranni was conceived considering she's an Empyrian. Considering the Elden Ring directly impacts the rules of the land (no Rune of Death, so nobody's dying) I wonder now to the implications of Radagon gifting Rennala the Rune of the Unborn that perfects rebirth. If he had plucked it from himself, it means he removed the possibility of rebirth from the laws of the land (if he shared the same body as Marika, meaning he removed it from the Elden Ring; the implication of him already housing a few runes if he's in a separate body to her means she for whatever reason cast those runes out as well). Perhaps giving the rune away didn't mean much in a world where nobody died (yet), so rebirth lost its value. Finally, this topic reminded me of the singing bat ladies. Their song is in Latin, but when translated (translation is on RU-vid) it shows they're lamenting that they were destined to become mothers, but because they became tarnished (their grace was removed), they were unable to do so. Thus, this to me goes with the Dung Eater's words. He despoils his victims, their souls can't return to the Erdtree to receive/renew their grace, and they're born cursed. Similarly, perhaps the rituals you described were there to maintain the grace, and connection to the Erdtree, so the souls can be reincarnated through the Erdtree and gifted to the parents that created the body via regular means. The song implies that, at the very least, tarnished aren't able to reproduce at all in the Lands Between without the grace of the Erdtree. Maybe that's why those who *can* are hunted: they prove the Order wrong in a similar way those who Live in Death do. Great video, thank you so much!

Between the aeonia tree in Caelid birthing Malenia's "daughters" (buds) and the painting of Marika somehow embedded in, being, the erdtree, I'm starting to think that maybe the various great trees in game (erdtree, haligtree) might have been people at first. Even Miquella's cocoon, with the way its hand is protuding out of it, looks like a pod with a leaf growing out of it. That would make the sap, giver of life, the actual blood of Marika, in parallel with the blood of Christ. Maybe that's what it means to be an Empyrean: a being fit to become a great tree.
@shira_yone

Late and I'm not particularly well versed in ER lore but if I may ask, isn't Marika a Numan? And what's the difference between Numan and Empyrean?
@elymnir4683
@elymnir4683 Год назад
@@shira_yone No problem! I won't pretend I'm a master in ER's lore, I just enjoy making up theories. The thing is, we're not entirely sure Marika is Numan and there's no explanation in-game to what makes an Empyrean an Empyrean, but here's what I think. While we don't have direct proof that Marika is Numan, this is strongly suggested by items saying she has "ties" with the Numans. Plus, her nickname, Marika the Eternal, could possibly be due to here coming from the Eternal Cities, where Numans dwell. Therefore, while I wouldn't say for a fact that Marika is Numan, it seems to be highly possible. Empyreans, now, are a bit tricky. We know that Ranni and Miquella are Empyreans, but not their brothers and sisters. Which would mean that being an Empyrean isn't directly tied to being a god or demi-god. And since it is strongly hinted that Marika is Numan, her offspring are logically Numan as well, but not all of them are Empyrean. Therefore, there's seemingly no connection between those two. My theory is that the term "Empyrean" refers to chosen people that can be turned into great trees. That could explain why there are multiple great trees and also why Ranni burned her body, so that it wouldn't be used to make a great tree. It would also explain the figure we see in the tree when we fight against Malenia. I think "Empyrean" comes from "empire", because Empyreans can bring entire empires to life through their sacred, life-giving sap. And, finally, it might be Mohg's plan to use Miquella to grow his own grea tree, his own empire, his very own "Mohgwyn dynasty". The way I see it, Empyreans become great trees and bring life. That life must obey rules, which is enforced by the Elden Ring, its physical manifestation, which is in turn held by a Consort. Edit: there's also the fact that Melina is Marika's daughter but wonders how it feels to be born from a mother. If Marika is the Erdtree, that would explain how she's her mother without giving birth to her in the usual manner.

@@shira_yone The Numen are a race of people. You can make your Tarnished one during character creation by selecting the Numen template. They are said to be the "supposed descendants of denizens of another world", and to have long lives, although in turn very few are born. An Empyrean is an individual selected by the Two Fingers who can serve as a potential successor to the incumbent host of the Elden Ring - a role currently occupied by Queen Marika. During the events of the game, the only known Empyreans are Ranni, Malenia, and Miquella, although we are also told by item descriptions that Marika herself was once an Empyrean. The Two Fingers also assign "shadows" to the Empyreans, to serve as both companion and as a contingency assassin in case their respective Empyrean goes rogue. We only know the identity of two shadows. In Ranni's case, her shadow is Blaidd, while Marika's shadow is Maliketh.

Suddenly the giant ants make so much sense. The dominant theory of them eating tarnished and dropping the Lord's Runes never sat right with me, but in the context of the Erdtree life cycle, they serve as a guidepost to make the parallel to their sexual structures. The rune serves to suggest that the birthing rituals of hive insect queens are exactly like the role of Marika for the Tarnished in the age of plenty.

You seem to think it implies wonder about the feeling that Bog has, but I'm pretty sure its meant to convey that Melina identifies with Bog in a way. Melina's mother (Marika) gave her a goal, but they have not spoken since, and presumably Melina feels a sort of longing for Marika, just as Bog does for his mother. She wonders, is it a universal truth that people long for their mothers affection?

It's genuinely amazing how this many months have passed and people are still coming out with great lore videos! Your theory is interesting and very well thought-out. However, there is one key thing to it that doesn't make sense that you didn't address. How can you have royal, noble, and common bloodlines if everyone is born from the Erdtree and via Marika? How does anyone outside the Golden Order like the Carians have normal humans without the Erdtree? I think the people being born from the tree is representative of their souls being reborn, not their actual bodies for reasons above. Millicent and her sisters are born from the actual scarlet aeonia itself the same way the Kindred of Rot are, they're special exceptions who come from Malenia in a unique way. Also, the fact that Milicent herself knows she is related to Malenia but not sure how and is a living aspect of her personality or willpower seems like the game is telling you she is a strange and unique case. As for Melina, her memories weren't fully restored at that point, we know she is Marika's actual daughter and is currently lacking a real body so she IS just a soul so if she came back through the Erdtree literally what she said would make sense. I do agree that the whole baptismal ritual thing and the perfumers role makes sense though!
@tarnishedarchaeologist
@tarnishedarchaeologist Год назад
You make some excellent points. We had a section addressing the issue of lineages and bloodlines in the video, which was left on the metaphorical cutting room floor. But the forensics remain: there are two prominently situated baptismal fonts just outside Marikas chamber, at the foot of the Erdtree, and a procession of now slain finger readers leading from the bedchamber to the fonts. Undoubtedly there is room for a royal/noble birthing process distinct from the common fonts in use throughout the rest of the city. Hopefully we will have space to return to this topic in the future. In the meantime, keep digging!

Alright, a few notes of interest: As per my position on the first video, I believe that most human births are ‘typical’ - but the point about baptism is well-taken. A human may be born from a mother and still be reborn by Erdtree baptism! This also allows for the Omen as the un-baptisable. This is important because Marika herself had Omen twins, so becoming Omen cannot be simply a result of not receiving blessings, since she had blessings to spare (until the end of the age of plenty, but we know Morgott and Mohg must be older than the Twin Prodigies and likely older than the Carian demigods). I’m also surprised that Renalla’s Rune of the Unborn didn’t come up - it’s a powerful argument for your position! Rennala being given an Amber (ie crystallized sap) egg containing the Great Rune that oversees birth and rebirth is a very potent gift, and might be why she was able to bear demigod children fathered by Marika. A sly wedding gift, if Marika desired her children to be demigods from birth. The cradles in the grand library point to a continuation of birth in Raya Lucaria, at the very least, after the houses of tree and moon aligned. I would suggest also that the cocoons in Elphael are applicable to this topic as well - that is a form of rebirth different from Rennala’s or the Erdtree’s reincarnation. Would it be possible to request a full dive into Miquella’s statuary and architecture, cocoons and, well, womb imagery? I think that there’s something very interesting there, with Miquella clearly taking inspiration from the medieval iconography of the Christ Child - but never aging, forever a divine infant. There’s a single statue of what seems to be an adult Miquella on the Promenade in the Haligtree that is one of the most interesting statues in Elden Ring, from my perspective.

@SeanHoltzman
@SeanHoltzman 2 месяца назад
@Akadar2742 There are a few other comments giving some interesting intersections, so here is a theory combining them: If giving Rennala the Rune of Rebirth meant no rebirth of physicality, and there not being a Rune of Death so infinite life, then there is no longer a cycle. The buds would be the way to refresh and renew the Grace/soul, and the procreation would potentially yield a body to put the Grace in, as those two processes need intervention now. We see a lot of mentions of the Grace changing the body it inhabits, possibly leading to Chimeras and Abominations, thus most of royal blood might be the lines of those touched directly by the Empyreans, which may mean that because they "are of the trees" they instead are purely born of the trees in some way, and are "seeds" of new trees, potentially, in a way that 'has transcended standard physical limitations.'

I discovered your content yesterday, and I just want to say that your work is absolutely stellar. Easily some of the most fascinating lore videos that I've seen to date. A quick thought regarding this video's theories. While I think you are clearly onto something with this whole concept of the cycle of Erdtree birth, I'm still convinced that natural births had to have continued. Godfrey and Radagon are both cited as not only Marika's husbands but also the fathers of her children. Godwyn and Godrick are both said to be direct descendants of Godfrey. People even refer to Godfrey's line as the Golden Lineage. So how could Godfrey have direct descendants if they were all simply born of the Erdtree? In Radagon's case, he is said to have fathered children with both Rennala and Marika. In fact, it is Marika's attempt to bear children with Radagon (her other self) that is said to have been the reason for Miquella and Malenia being born afflicted. Furthermore, while Godfrey and Radagon both held the title of Elden Lord, they were also granted another title: king consort. The term "consort" clearly implies that their duties were at least partially of a sexual nature. All of this says to me that they were still making babies the old fashioned way. Please correct me if I'm wrong about any of this. I don't have the encyclopedic knowledge of the lore that you guys do. And I'm sorry if you already addressed these points in the video. I'm writing this late at night lol.

We've all heard the superficial points talked to death, however your videos discuss lore from such a unique perspective that the bigger lore channels often overlook. I hope you keep doing these because they're awesome videos. 👍

Fantastic work. I really think you are the most important ER lore theorist out there. Ultimately, anyone can read item descriptions. But your detailed analysis of the environments, and the wealth of real world knowledge you bring to them, is unique. No wonder some of the best of the conventional lore theorists, like Quelaag and Smough, keep talking about you. Anyway, I'm glad to have found someone pursuing the Leyndell/Constantinople connection, and so skillfully. I look forward to the next installment.

While I agree with this, and find it very interesting, what do you make of the Demigods then? Because we're explicitly told they were born in sets, to Marika and Godfrey, Ragadon and Renalla, and Marika and Radagon. What does this coupling have to do with their births, if they were all born from this baptism sap ritual anyway? And speaking of Radagon and Renalla, if your idea about the Demi-Humans being demi because they're born from normal sex, rather than sap baptism, how can the Carians produce regular humans?

@@ivory867 It makes me wonder what the actual utility of gender itself is in the Lands Between. What's the point of male and female if life doesn't come from sex? Why would The Erdtree even 'birth' two different genders? Or maybe I'm looking too deeply into it...
@sidewaysfcs0718
@sidewaysfcs0718 Год назад
@Jackson Benincosa I think the Erdtree is essentially an improvization, it's not natural. So it merely recycles souls and people in whatever natural form they have. It's very likely that natural birth is still possible, but many people either forgot about it, or are afraid of the Omen Curse.
@bumblegoot1139
@bumblegoot1139 Год назад
@@jacksonbenincosa3759 It always seemed to me as though humans are capable of having sex, but it is considered heretical to do so by the Golden Order. Presumably, the Carians just… have sex. The Erdtree probably births souls based on their previous forms in life after they are absorbed.
@Zayindjejfj
@Zayindjejfj 10 месяцев назад
@@jacksonbenincosa3759I think the idea is that humanity already reproduced in a traditional manner. But the greater will slowly eroded the need for sexual reproduction. Someone referenced in another video that the original text of the turtle neck meat said something about "turtle neck meat used to be an aphrodisiac" or something like that. But that description was changed. And I think it was changed because it was too on the nose for what was going on. It's supposed to be very subtle that human reproduction was made irrelevant. The greater will quite literally is a godlike entity that asserts control. So much so that it wants to control even the aspects that govern life and the reproduction of life. And humanity basically lost their collective sex drive, since there was literally no need for it anymore. Life is all twisted and persists without it.

Fantastic video, helps a lot with my stories, I'm so grateful you're going in depth with the life and death cycle lore. Let me hit you up with a question : any idea where the body comes from? Does it drop in the sap? Or is it "moulded" from sap? Because if natural procreation is icky and people have no parents, the flesh has to come from somewhere.
@tarnishedarchaeologist

A good question. A hint is in Renalla's amber egg (fossilized tree sap), which contains the rune of the unborn and is in the characteristic kidney bean shape that other embryoid items, like the larval tear, are depicted in. The allusion is that the body literally develops from inanimate substances like sap tears or larval tears in the way a person develops from an embryo.

This is an awesome video, but it did leave me wondering why Morgott and Mogh where born Omen when there is such a practical solution in place to prevent that? Perhaps they didn’t think it neccesary for demigod children, even though it was? Or perhaps they were Marika’s first children, from when before this ritual came into practice. Also, it does still seem that Godfrey and Marika had children the old fashioned way, as did Marika and Radagon. I guess Godfrey’s children where born before the Age of the Erdtree proper, before the war with the giants, and Marika and Radagon were(or was?) a special case regardless.

what's interesting is i was looking at the statues of the cloaked woman with a vase/urn/hydria(?) from a different angle entirely. I didn't think that the style and positioning in the churches indicated a figure like Marika, as this cloaked woman is typically not found as the central figure of worship/the cult object. I was looking at nyx and hestia in particular. so far this is the most concrete argument I've seen that the statue is another depiction of marika, rather than just relying on the common thread of "statue of a woman"

Is the Crucible a sort of analog to paganism, with the faith of the Erdtree both forcefully replacing it while rebranding some of its rituals (think Christmas, Easter), etc.? Are the misbegotten those born of a union between those blessed and those not blessed by the Erdtree?

I'm very curious if you think the dung eater's ending is evil or not. Obviously the man himself is evil, but there's an argument to be made that he's merely removing the Greater Will's influence over the Great Tree and Crucible that they had the Elden Beast take over. A return to the era responsible for not just Omens and Misbegotten, but the Crucible Knights. In fact, I'd love to hear your take on *all* the endings. I'm sure you'd have so much to share from the Moonlight Altar, Fia, Goldmask, whether "stopping new births" in the flame of frenzy ending means no new life will be born or merely no new life from the Erdtree...

This is a game changer and could reveal so much more to the lore. Interesting to note is the “Silver” murky water found only in the Nameless Eternal City can be found in bodies of water with the Tibia Mariners and Deathroot(Summonwater village). If the item descriptions that elude the dew or “tears” that dropped from the erdtree was a source of life itself in the age of plenty is to be true then my working theory the reason that age of plenty stopped was because Godwyn was buried at the roots, became the “imitation” of that process and the sap started to drop from his eyes instead in the form of “silver” tears(this happens in the cinematic). This I believe is the origin of the Albinaurics in particular, since they are said to be born of said tears and ripples, also explaining why their legs don’t work or petrify since Godwyn didn’t have any.

Even today, all eastern orthodox Churches in canonical countries (including my country of Romania which is the only latin-speaking orthodox country, an interesting subject in itself) still get their basic myrhh directly from Greece after it has been blessed by The Patriarh in Constantinople (Istanbul), although it is also modified locally with other ingredients in each country accoring to local rites. But the base myrhh substrate comes from Greece. On the topic of the myrrh/chrysm used locally in Greece and Constantinople in particular, in addition to tree sap and other aromatic plants, ash from burnt old icons is also added, i only just learned this recently.

While watching I noticed that on the statues, and especially on the erdtree's favor talisman, Marika's jugs is held right at the level of her uterus, which is logical given the life-giving theme. Also at least two Omenkillers are near Omens. The one in the Altus Plateau is near Omens and preparing perfumes, probably so that he can kill them, while the one in Leyndell is watching over the sewers, probably in case an Omen attempts to escape. There also seems to be an uncovered collection basin where the gargoyle is praying with three envoys.

I understood Erdtree birth to be more literal, in the same vein that Malenia's daughters were born from the Scarlet Rot Swamp, people were "created" with souls through the Erdtree's sap, accumulated in the basins and then formed into a person, fully grown. The reason for Melina's being greeted with a purpose at birth was because she was created a fully grown, reborn soul, made from the Erdtree.
