ELDEN RING Lore | What Makes These Perfumers So Depraved? 

One aspect of the depraved perfumers that I want to tease out a bit more here than I did in the video is that I think their self-destructive nature is related to and a product of their heretical stance. The depraved perfumers don't seem to like authority, which I think is why they're described as being selfish (or you could say individualistic if you want to see it from their perspective). This abhorrence to authority is what makes them so depraved to the Golden Order (the ruling authority of the Lands Between) and why they practice "forbidden" techniques, because they don't want THE MAN keeping them down. This makes the Shaded Castle an even more convenient location, because I'm willing to speculate that ole Elemer of the Briar isn't really much for authority either, and they all kind of do as they please.

Their chest piece clearly depicts serpents with forked tongues enwreathed along the erdtree. They may not directly serve Rykard but they may be searching for the great serpent or simply chose a blasphemous sigil out of spite. They spit poison much how you’d expect a serpent to. Rykard seems to have a finger in nearly every pie. His Iron Maiden’s can be found in a lot of random bases and always seem to be ambushing/hunting the main character. The godskin nobles run his church and even a fire monk has converted to their cause. I wouldn’t be surprised if deprived perfumers served as scouts/apostles to Rykard. I don’t know the lore behind finger creepers but they’re clearly rykards own hand running around like spiders. And these hands have a unique paralysis spell that no other sorcery resembles.

If the perfumers had the mind to, I think they could have devastated the capital and the order itself. Especially after they were promoted to command positions. With all of the diffusers inside the capital, and the diffuser.. balista? Bolts? It would have been a piece of cake to kill or debilitate the entire martial force and either kill or charm pretty much everyone inside the walls of the city.

Is it possible that the depraved perfumers became heretical within the Volcano Manor? Their robe has serpents marked on them, could they have been the apothecaries that serviced the warriors of Gelmir when they were fighting off the forces of Leyndell. Only for them to succumb to depravity under the new blasphemous tenants of Rykard?

I thought you would discuss about all perfumers. Because there were those who treated the ones considered impures as Misbigotten, Omens and Albinaurics. Perfurmer Tricia Ashes and Perfumer's Traveling set say this.

Excellent reading, great to see the situatedness/orientation of descriptions taken into consideration!

The lore you read out gives off the impression of a single, unnamed heretical perfumer who tested dangerous concotions on himself, willing to sacrifice himself and his morals to further the goals of the Perfumers and the Golden Order.... Who was spat upon by his fellows when they found out about it. The idea of turning a healer's art to a battlefield art is already anathema to most healer-inclined folks, but the idea of deliberately using the healing arts to harm the body for the sake of your goals would likely be a step too far for a group that already had to sacrifice so much of who and what they were for the sake of the Golden Order. I could easily see this unnamed perfumer, or perhaps a research group of perfumers, feeling spited and betrayed by his comrade's reactions, and choosing to leave and 'become depraved', by spiting those who they felt had spited them first, hence the anti-Golden Order iconography. A perfumer that felt that they'd already betrayed their ethics for the Golden Order, only to take a seemingly arbitrary stance against a further betrayal, and instead deciding that the Order was to blame for the whole mess and choosing to stand against it. This would certainly explain how their 'depraved' perfumes were invented to begin with, and how an entire group sprung up. After all, inventing any kind of drug all alone would be rather difficult, but inventing multiple, including ones that, according to the lore, require you to put acids and poisons IN YOUR MOUTH, but NOT have them kill you.... That seems beyond one man, much less one man with post-war resources, or lack therof. That smacks of coordinated research... And test subjects. Test subjects that probably died at least a few times, which may ALSO explain why this theoretical perfumer(s) would be decried by their fellows when their research was revealed.

Maybe I don't understand how spirit ashes are supposed to come to be but how can they make Carmaan's ashes if he ended up becoming Rykard's brunch? Edit: autocorrect doesn't like Elden Ring's fancy names

Their heresy against the erdtree is obvious and clearly a part of their earning their monicker, but I have an additional point. The art of perfumes seems to be predicated on creating concoctions with healing and beneficial properties, yet the depraved perfumers are characterized by concoctions that harm even their own bodies and self-experimentation, which seems to go directly against the principles of the art of perfumes and a solid enough reason to deem them depraved. I don't think the depraved perfumers can be seen as a unified order with common leadership. Much like the omenkillers, at this age they're drifters and mercenaries working for whomever can afford them, either in runes or their object of obsession. I'm pretty sure the shaded castle perfumers are more than just opportunistic squatters, given their specialization in poisons it's highly likely they're malais's guests and had a hand in the castle's current vile form.

Uhhhhhh maybe I'm giga-late to this, but is it just me or does the symbol on the apron of the Depraved Perfumers look like the helix of the Godkiller Greatsword, and therefore link their 'depraved' nature to the GEQ and the first burning of the Erdtree?

This may be a random piece of non info but Radagon is dealt extra damage from fire (Dragons fire spell works wonders) could the outlawing have been a self preservation technique but as the wars grew to out of control the rules started to slip, he didnt want someone concocting the brew that could be his downfall, Rykard couldve also hired them from the shaded castle to work on methods of beating Radagon to overthrow the gods, they can practice in solitude, seems like a win win Very random spread train of thought but I feel it fits XD (I do understand Radagons fire weakness could just be for the sake of gameplay)

Depraved perfumers simply lack maidens

I think it is hard to get the full picture about perfumers without the work of this guy: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3C-AaanlTD4.html He pretty much reconstructs their role in Leyendell before the shattering - and how they were deeply involved in the whole process that covers life and death - which seems to be a key question any Order with a capital O seems to revolve around. In short: They likely manufactured the Erd Tree's sap into a holy essence you needed to create life; maybe literally, maybe only life that wasn't considered to be heretic. That one of the depraved was looking for a perfume of revivication really fits that theme as well. To add to this: The jars are selaed with an erd tree seal and carry the flesh of heroes ....whatever is going on there... hunting them for shards directly interfers with the Life/Death loop the Golden Order had going for itself.
