Discovering the Modern Witch Tarot with creator Lisa Sterle

To celebrate the launch of the eagerly anticipated Modern Witch Tarot, creator Lisa Sterle dropped into Watkins Books to give some insight into this vivacious and contemporary deck. In a lively interview with Eleanor Tremeer, Lisa revealed the origins of the Modern Witch, explaining its similarities and differences with the Rider-Waite-Smith, and defending her decision to focus on women and non-binary people in her quest to create a diverse, body-positive, and feminist tarot.
Lisa Sterle is a comic artist who has been published by IDW, CollegeHumor, Dorkly, and many indie publishers. She has done interiors and cover art for comics including Glow and Steven Universe, and she also co-created the popular comic Long Lost. Her next project, entitled Squad, is a comic about teen girl werewolves that blends gothic horror with classic high school shenanigans.

Lisa totally nailed the colour pallet in this deck. Every witch should have a copy of this deck.

this was the first deck I ever purchased in 2022, I purchased the deck because of the cover, when I was little my mom would style my hair like her box cover art. It made me feel happy and this deck I always get drawn back to. I have purchased her journal and coloring book to help me on my journey. Thank you for the diversity of your deck. Even though I am not the age of the characters in the deck, they take me back to my late twenties when I was stepping into my true self.

I'm on a rampage buying tarot decks since COVID came along, but I still keep reaching for this deck! It's making me realize that we aren't used to seeing women in these powerful roles and it was hard for me at first...which was like an awakening moment for me and it's been such an awesome tool for me to see women (and myself) in this light.

Lisa PLEASE make a travel sized/playing card sized deck. I bought the original and I LOVE IT but my sweet little hands can't handle the size/stock combo so I keep dropping them 😂 x

I cut the borders off mine and now they are the perfect size! I watched some RU-vid videos on "how to modify tarot decks" first.

If I made a deck of tarot only featuring masculine and male figures that would be considered sexist a nice coming to would be saying that I was putting it out of balance a correct comment would be that was sexist underneath equality I would have to say the same about somebody that did the reverse and excluded males just for being males so all things being equal and respecting equality I'm going to say this is sexist

Milton Knowles it’s not sexist because men literally have the advantage in almost every facet of life, women and non-binary folk are oppressed for their sex and gender-males/men are not. Also, there are masculine women depicted in this deck so save your critique before actually seeing the cards.

I know of at least one all-male deck out there and I’ve seen several more that seem like they could be. I don’t own any of those so I can’t say for sure but all-male decks *do* exist

@@DeaceasedDisaster222 I just didn't think it would be more than one person that stupid it's kind of missing the lessons when you're using them for teaching they are for more than what telling the future it said some people miss that

@@lukewarmfruitcup7377 I just thought excluding or showing biased over 1 gender v the other what's a sexist action I suppose it's unreasonable to ask for equality I suppose I'm old fashioned like that and if my previous statement offence you you must be a gangsta quality considering it was only bringing up a hypothetical scenario reversing this one
