The 4 Swords is an interesting card in Modern Witch. I immediately liked it because it seemed more feminine, less stoic. It made me feel like she was comforting herself, hugging herself, and preparing for what comes next. And I feel like she's soon going to move her right arm down and clasp her hands together. I put my hand to my forehead a lot, I've noticed, to rub away stress :) Love the deck mod!
I just ordered the Modern Witch. I love the colors. Take the six of cups, in the Waite deck the yellows blend together. I love my Rider-Waite deck but am so excited for the Modern Witch!
I felt the same way about seeing the tech stuff... but if you look around it is truly what we see and use when we go out so i think its a good thing! Great comparison video.
Thank you for this side by side! I use the Modern Witch deck primarily, because I found that I connect with this version much more than I connect with the original Smith-Waite deck. I hadn’t actually seen all of them side by side before!
Where have I been?? I am loving this modern witch tarot deck!!!! Morgan greer deck is my first, and although I do love the classic raider waite, I think modern witch will be the 2nd deck I get to continue practicing. Thanks for this comparison :)
I wasn’t sure how I felt about this deck initially (I’m a bit of a purist and didn’t really vibe with the idea of smartphones and motorcycles in tarot imagery!) but all your observations and musings on this deck have made me fall in love! I’m so in love with the modern set, I loved the rider Waite for its traditional style and its symbolism and intuitiveness and was going to buy it (I have a deck I painted myself with black ink, a copy of the RWS) but whatever other deck I loved the style of, in the minor arcana didn’t have the paintings that tell a story but just the number of the suit, and was considering starting a big project of painting my own deck , a copy of the RWS in my style, and would definitely end up doing all women (cause I’m gay and feminist and can only draw women 😂) but the modern deck is way better than what I would’ve made (might do that project in a few years when I have time and that level of dedication 😂) But seriously the colors, the women, the diversity 😍😍😍
I used a guillotine-style paper cutter and did one side at a time using guides at each side to ensure more uniform cuts. Check out RU-vid channel Boho Tarot. She has tutorials on modding decks and I learned alot from her! Good luck!
I got a knock off of the Modern Witch Tarot as my first deck (because the authentic one is so costly) and then RSW (ofc knock off again) on the way. I love them both, thank you for this vid.
i have the modern witch tarot but should I buy the rws deck? I'm still a beginner so can I learn the meanings better w/ the rws deck? or is the modern witch just as good?

The only thing that makes smith-waite worth it for me is that it's sooooo much easier to shuffle. I prefer the imagery on Modern Witch by far because of the diversity. But smith-waite is a classic from which most modern decks are based. You by no means NEED it, because the imagery will be in most tarot books you read. If riffle shuffling is your highest priority and you only want one of these decks, get the smith-waite.
I can’t decide if this deck is a bit too young for me. I felt the same way about the good karma tarot and ended up decluttering it. I really want to pick this up but the pastel tones are putting me off 😢 Have you found yourself reaching for this more than the original? I’m trying to justify to myself whether I need both 😅
I used this one a lot when I first got it. It’s very easy to read with, but now I barely reach for it when I have RWS on MUCH better cardstock. I use this deck as my “bathtub tarot” because the cards are so glossy they’re practically waterproof. Also, they’re already thick, so when they drop in the water, you usually can’t tell they’re waterlogged. 🤣
I’m new to tarot and want to grab my first deck but was told beginners should start with the rws deck but I I really want something more aesthetic e.g. the modern witch or pagan tarot e.t.c. Would I be at a disadvantage if I skip starting with rws?
I don't think so. Tarot is about honing your intuition. You should get whatever deck calls to you. Modern Witch is enough like RWS that you could get any RWS-type tarot intro book and use it just fine. What's most important in tarot is following your own instincts. Go with whatever deck(s) you like. 😊
As far as the images, this is absolutely a great first deck. The symbolism is nearly identical to the RWS deck. It's also a wonderful deck to use for readings for others, as it is so diverse. The ONLY downside to this deck is the difficulty in shuffling it, if you don't overhand shuffle. 💜
I am of the opinion that you can start with ANY deck. The deck that unlocked tarot for me was the Wild Unknown. I wasn't ready for people in my cards yet for some reason, and that deck helped me learn. Whatever deck calls to you can be the one for YOU to learn with. Don't let anyone tell you you have to learn with a specific deck. Good luck!

As a newly beginner,(working on Everyday Witch) was told this one would "fit" me.(the store didn't have these) I'm enjoying my deck, however I'm wondering should I get Rider-Waite now or wait til...... I thought getting this Modern Witch should be my third deck. Shouldn't I learn from the best(top) and study that since everything comes from this original? Thanks! 😊

Hi Mei! Modern Witch is made to be a reimagining of the Rider-Waite, so if you like it, it will be great for a beginner deck! The symbolism is pretty much the same. Good luck on your tarot journey!
I disagree about the heels. I am a woman who dresses for comfort. But, once, when I was giving an hour-long performance, I did wear heels. While I was on stage, the performance high overrode everything else -- I felt no pain! But, as soon as I was finished, and off stage, I realized how horribly those heels were hurting my feet (beautiful though they were!) I could barely walk! I think that anybody who nonchalantly wears heels has real strength!!!!!
I love this deck. I felt the same excitement when I seen all the diversity in race, body types and culture. The empress is Oshun energy. Oshun is the main Orishas that Beyonce honored in lemonade.
At the time I made this video, I wasn’t able to have many men represented in my tarot decks. It was a “shadow” issue for me, but I’ve gotten much better about that now. Whatever I said in this video likely doesn’t represent how I feel now. 💜
