Discovering the remote beauty of Big Bend National Park

We dry-camped at Rio Grande Village Campground in Big Bend National Park for 5 nights in 105-degree weather, but that didn't stop us from getting in a bunch of hikes and discovering firsthand why this national park is now one of our favorites.
If you want to see wildlife, beautiful mountainscapes, and some of the darkest skies you can get in the United States, then Big Bend is for you.
And, as a bonus, you can walk into Mexico to get some great local food!

Love it out there. Usually stay on the Terralengua side for quick access to the Santa Elena canyon hike. Mule Ears is another favorite.

When my husband and I were dipping our feet in what is left of the diminished Rio Grande (thanks to human activity, as you pointed out) on the Santa Elena canyon trail, we noticed a couple videoing themselves. You introduced yourselves as Trekers with one T. When we got back to our car, we found your business card on our car. I said to myself that I would comment on your video, and sure enough, here I am. The Santa Elena canyon hike is simply spectacular. After crossing Terlingua creek, it was a challenge to find the access to the trail. Despite being in our late 60s, we somehow managed to scramble up the bank of the creek to the trail. Even though the temperatures were not so high for May, we felt dehydrated quickly and drank a lot of water. We were so lucky to do this hike.

I told her that, at worst, someone would just be confused about why we left our business card on their car. 😄 We're also glad you persevered to do that hike despite the acces being harder than it once was. Windows Trail does have black bears and tarantulas. Saw them both.

Do they offer rafting trips down the river and come out where you were by the cannon

There are rafting trips down the Rio Grande. How far down you come is dependent on water levels and water flow at the time.

Why do they call it a "dry" campground when they have water spigots? Weird! And speaking of water, what about the old saying Never drink the water in Mexico? Any warnings regarding that?

Good point, and that was my mistake - I should have said there were no hookups for camping. Dry camping, boondocking, rustic camping, etc. all have different meanings and weren't used as interchangeably as they are now by many people. I'll remember that and try to keep them more distinct when talking about places in our videos. Thanks for watching and for pointing that out. It's an important distinction when planning trips! -Ari

Oh, and regarding the water in Mexico - we didn't drink any because of that old saying, but they didn't have anything posted or say anything at the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol station. Still, better safe than sorry, so we stuck to margaritas. 😄 -Ari

Been there a few times and I really love it. Your thumbnail proves you illegally crossed the border!😊 I saw many sales guys constantly crossing from Mexico to restock there supplies for sale. Did you?

We saw a few people on the U.S. side collecting money from their vaults and we saw a lot of items left out for sale, especially in Boquillas Canyon. The rangers told us that as long as the items are kept neatly and in just a couple of areas, they tend to look the other way. But if sellers encroach on trails or become a nuisance in any way, then they take action. The system seems to work well enough. Thanks for watching!
