A V8 and a TD5 discovery 2 In the state forest.
It was very rainy and slippery so we got to test out the traction control plenty.
Both vehicles have 2" lifts but no other suspension work
The silver discovery has ACE which means the sway bars effectively disconnect when in low range, and a diff lock which is used sometimes.

Love the cars. Good video. It center diff locked, shouldn’t TC be switched off completely off so it’s not fighting itself? Just so I know, ‘cause I’ve got two of ‘em with no CDL and wanted to add it.
@dustydisco2906
@dustydisco2906 3 года назад
CDL makes it a normal 4WD, TC works with the CDL to make it an incredibly capable 4WD :D On models not originally equipped with the CDL lever, and the CDL is engaged, will come up with an ABS fault which disables the traction control. The blue discovery was one, but since fitting the later model SLABS the CDL can be used in conjunction with the TC. Alternatively, you can cut just one wire that stops the older SLABS from disabling TC with the CDL engaged. Having rebuilt the blue discoveries transfer case I can confirm that running these off road with no CDL is terrible for the transfer case. Cheers

@alifuatyuvali9912 3 года назад
@@dustydisco2906 Thanks for the upload, great driving and filming! About the CDL, are you saying that it is actually harder on the disco to run it off-road without it? Or running it without the newer ECU is bad on the truck? Thanks if you could clarify
@dustydisco2906
@dustydisco2906 3 года назад
@@alifuatyuvali9912 Thanks Ali glad you enjoyed it. The differential in the transfer case has brass thrust washers that wear out quickly if the CDL is not engaged and there is a lot of wheel slip. The blue discovery spent the first 250 000KMS of its life without the CDL being engaged, and the thrust washers were worn paper thin. A little longer and the differential gears would be grinding into their own housing. The new SLABS allows the vehicles TC to remain in operation with the CDL engaged, and it performs fantastically! hope that clears it up , thank you!

@@dustydisco2906 see mine was not updated and when I go into CDL I don't have an ABS fault only if I shut the engine off and back on while in CDL. But if I put it back to regular all-wheel drive before shutting the engine off there's no Three Amigos. So for future reference. How you can avoid that just don't turn it off in CDL in back on and if you do then take it out of CDL turn it back off again and back on and the Three Amigos will go away

@4:25. When the front right wheel is in the air how do you get it to not spin when relying on traction control? Usually spends much faster before kicking in. Are you left foot braking even with traction control? Watch that part of the video. I'm curious because if mine goes in the air like that it will spend much more and then TC

Great video. I own a 1999 Discovery and I have just install an actuator that engages the CDL. When it is engaged and I go offroad I can see the TC ( light on) also to be working. Shall I leave it as it is or change my SLAB?
@checa160
@checa160 2 года назад
Leave it!! CDL doesn’t avoid the TC to come in when necesary. It just works half the times as the car becomes a lot more capable. Try the same section with or without CDL and you’ll see the difference. With the cdl in(locked) the tc will act a bit or nothing depending on how hard the track is. Without it(unlocked) the TC will become crazy🤣. You’ll go up anyway, but with double the effort from the car… A good set of 32” or 33”, cdl and tc working will take you a lot of places. If you want to go hardcore, get lockers(even a 100% in thevrear and an ATB in te front) and hd shafts(ashcroft)… You’ll go anywhere at half the price of a Prado with a car the same size… Cheers!!

@@SuperKokoui. You’re wellcome. Enjoy it. It works really good even in std mode. Anyway, if you have the chance to, go for ATB in both axles or 100% in the rear and ATB in the front(unless you do extreme, so better both ones 100%). That way you will have reinforced diffs, which is the weakest point of the car. If you are smooth with the gas it can last forever with the stock half shafts and cv’s. Cheers. Enjoy it

@checa160
@checa160 2 года назад
@@SuperKokoui. As I said before, if you don’t do extreme offroad you will not probably ever need HD cv joints and half shafts. In any case, that one would be the change or mod to do(maybe) after +2” susp lift, +30-40 mm spacers or rims(offset) and reinforcing the diffs(this is the real weakest poimt of the car). So +2” lift, spacers to compensate the lift(wider wheelbase to recover/increase stability), bumpers, winch and diff lockers or atb… After all these things you can maybe think about hd shafts and cv’s. But they’re not that weak. Cheers

@mikeb53 3 года назад
If you think an open center diff is better than the D1 already then, connect it, and be amazed. I put a CDL on my D2 and you can feel the difference driving off tarmac with it. Especially when it comes to climbing hills... I don't use CDL going downhill or round tight turns but on the undulating flat stuff, in ruts, or boggy mud, or the aforementioned climbing of hills, the CDL really helps so much and does lessen the load on the TC.

@@mikeb53 did you use an old mechanism from a 300 ,,or knock some thing up ie socket up through the console. the onlty thing im a little unsure of is the electrical side ie the cutting of the wire so the tc is not disengaged,,there are so many contradictory theories out there
@dustydisco2906
@dustydisco2906 3 года назад
@@billrand4138 If not for the massive improvement in off road performance, but for the sake of the brass thrust washers inside the differential of the transfer case I highly recommend fitting a CDL lever and doing the "wire mod" to allow your TC to function simultaneously with the CDL. I've linked the disco 2 CDL lever from Ashcroft and they have some information around re-enabling the TC with the CDL in www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/miscellaneous/disco-ii-difflock/disco-ii-diff-lock.html I rebuilt both transfer cases on the discoveries in this video last year. The blue one had paper thin thrust washers because the CDL was previously never locked, and the diff was always turning. As you mentioned - there is a lot of misinformation out there surrounding the TC
@billrand4138
@billrand4138 3 года назад
@@dustydisco2906 so on an early one ie 2001 with the early ecu,,the wire mod shown in the ashcfroft link will work without having to switch off engage some thing switch on bla bla? an old 300 auto linkage still looks like a cheaper option lol

But any 99 model should have it anywhere in the world… Also, only rhe 2003-2004 with it as an extra came with the lever.
