The importance of load testing current carrying circuits and a redneckin' hillbilly method of doing so! It would have been so easy to condemn the module if not for this :)
Why would LR overcomplicate something as simple as a handbrake? What on earth was ever wrong with a manual handbrake lever? They basically created a complex solution to a problem that never existed.
Very informative video! Most dealerships will replace the module and charge you thousands of dollars! I try to do most of my maintenance on my disco 4 hse lux.and these videos help me a lot. Thank you! I hardly can wait for the Grenadier! I just subscribed.
Great informative video with good explanations of test steps, if only more techs were as thorough! This will definitely help with my next job on my pal's Range Rover today! Thanks Joe for putting in the effort.
Excellent video Joe.... thanks for sharing. It wouldn't have even crossed my mind to do a load test so I've learned a valuable lesson there. Oh and nice to see that you can get into the module without taking it off. Not sure its that easy without a hoist but there that's my problem.
This was a good way to show how to problem solving rather than condemn the unit. I had problems with my ecp on a 06 lr3. I removed the unit from the car and took it apart, the gear box which moves along the threaded bar pulling the brake cables had jammed up. Once I had opened the plastic gearbox the problem was obvious, there is an overload gear cog which is held in place by a washer and tensile spring. The washer had broken free from the overload cog and the spring had lost its function, the spring needs to be under a certain pressure for the module to work otherwise the module will keep trying to turn this is the loud noise or death scream often mentioned in the forums. The overload cog has a long shaft to take the spring and washer, this shaft can be removed from the cog wheel and replaced with a brass shaft which is what I have done, no problem with this in the four years since. The cog was made up using brass by a local machine shop cost me €60.
Back when I was still at Jlr the guys that were there a long time (2master techs) would always advise of the whole load testing heavy circuits, to be fair it’s a great way to 100% confirm wiring/circuit integrity. Must say the landys really are very interesting to work on!
I had exactly this fault on my D3, only problem was the load (bulb) lit up bright and showed no drop in voltage at all. Found it using, high/ low voltage capture on the meter and back probing the plug while connected to the EPB. Replaced the wire from the wheel arch connector back to the splice at the rear. never did find the corrosion/ damage even with the body off.
Great video Joe. I have recently replaced handbrake module and it works well. However, Amber park brake light is on constantly. My diagnostic fault code comes up with c1a40, longitudinal speed sensor. Any ideas pls.
I had a problem , hand brake fault light come On , however hand brake work goods. but when light come on, the diesel signal start coming down , but only on the board
Hello, I have a big problem on my D3 V8 HSE. The new EPB module is not recognized by the diagnostic tool (Hawkeye). The mechanic failed to find the fault and wants to replace the complete harness (my car has been in his garage for 6 months). What do you think ? Thanks a lot for your help.
Would a failed EPB unit cause hard ride on the suspension? I have a 2010 with the dynamic suspension and since the EPB has went faulty, the ride is absolutely horrible. To note the suspension has been fully rebuilt with genuine new shocks, bushes etc and calibrated.
Hi my parking brake won’t engage and comes up with parkbrake fault non functioning. When in park there’s no lights on the dash but when driving both amber and red flash. Any ideas please that i can point my mechanic to as the diagnostic machine didn’t pull up much. Also when trying to engage it you can’t hear the motor working
Hi i have disco4 i replaced the EPB module but still when i plug the scanner i still see these codes U201B-54 control module calibration data 2. C1A46-64 Actuator plausibility check, mismatch between motor drive current and resultant force. U0140-08 Lost communication with body control module. Please help
I have a 07 disco 3 had it a few months .it came with a handbrake fault replaced the brake module still no joy . Turns out I was supplied with a disco 4 module and it didn’t work so I changed circuit board .handbrake now works when keys are taken from the ignition and releases when you set off but not from the switch , any ideas on the reason for not working ? Changed switch still no joy .
I’m just attempting to sort my EPB now and looking at the plug that goes into the module on your video I see 2 green and yellow tracer wires going into the plug where as on mine the wires are left hanging. I’m guessing someone been messing with wiring. The module itself works but nothing when using the switch hoping it’s just those 2 wires any advice? Cheers James
So had a squealing module no lights on. put it in garage with new gears and shoes they said they fitted the gears in epb and the new shoes but it didn’t work and lights are on !!! I’m hoping they just pulled a wire somewhere if and when they had the module out
Hi i have been watching this video and trying to apply the same problem concerning. I check the wiring connector all is good do the load test also good. So i open the box module and found out that a water presence inside and made the gearbox cease. So rectify the gearbox, test the motor with the gearbox and its working fine. Before doing this test i isolate the wire supplying from the PCB Board. Assemble the module and installed back but its same no function all same problem occur with the amber parking illuminated. Please i need other advice on how to test the module on the bench? Manually just want to know if the module is faulty. Before buying new module.
Thanks for this Video, my Range Rover Sport 2,7 from 2005 have the same problem, but the position is 40cm more in the back, i think its the connector between two smal wire and the big one. I coudn´t find it, so i´ve lay paralell a 6mm2 cabel to PBM and connect them to the twin cable. Sorry my bad english, nice gretings from Austria!!!
I’ve had the HB switch fail also, would switch off (release) but not Switch on (HB applied) but would apply HB if Key removed from ignition, turned out to be the Switch! Cheap easy fix,!
2024 May. So if the wiring is bad and doesn’t talk to the Epb then nothing will work? My , new to me, 2007 Se has new Chinese unit but the car will not crank, hazards flash , door lock cycle, and transmission error E, many codes. Now the previous owner broke the connector as there is no locking tab. Watch this video, very helpful. I think that’s my issue. Your views?
good video thanks. I leave my multi meter conected to the circuit as in your case it will show 11.4 volts then touchthe H7 bulb onto the positive backprobe pin ang ground and watch the milti meter reading dive to zero or thereabouts!
duncanmil1 if the EPB module is free/not jammed and the shoes are free then the module will relatch when the handbrake is released - if the module is jammed then it needs unjamming (and the cause of the jamming investigated!) before it can be relatched 👍👍
@@joehodgy Thank you. I replaced the switch and it fixed it. Now years later i left the sun roof open in the rain and its broken again... Kind of silly to call this a land rover. I left my series 3, 88 in the rain with no top and a tarp with holes over it and it mostly worked. at very least the prblems were.." could you bother to fix it, not what is the problem..
I love my 06 LR3 but I will say things break more often than on my 1993 Land Cruiser. Bought it at 80,000 miles. 117,000 miles on the Rover now and since purchase I've replaced the front differential, alternator and starter. I do most work myself and that keeps costs down. Little things break quite often like glove box handles, leaking sunroof drains, sunroof shade retractor, and such. Also eats tie rods like a 5 year old with a bag of candy. It wont leave you stranded but can be frustrating/expensive if you have to take to a dealer. If you are looking for a low maintenance vehicle look elsewhere. I love the ride and capabilities so I put up with the finicky nature of the vehicle.
