Episode 4 is missing...
This critically acclaimed six-part mini-series... Shot between March and June 2004, Ultimate Survival: Everest chronicles the Everest efforts of Team Discovery, which included two Canadian climbers - producer and experienced adventure guide Ben Webster, and his girlfriend, rookie climber and PhD candidate in Sports Psychology, Shauna Burke - plus Australian Andrew Lock and Hector Ponce De Leon from Mexico, both veterans of Everest and the world's most intimidating peaks. The series also follows the treks of Annabelle Bond, a London socialite; and diabetic American climber Will Cross. The expedition's members, including the team's Nepalese Sherpa guides, were trained to act as the production team, filming the extreme physical demands, physiological changes and emotional hazards. Soaring 8,848 meters above sea level - equal to the height of 16 CN Towers placed end to end - Everest's summit is the ultimate challenge for climbers around the world.

Annabelle did make it, so from being a social climber to a real mountain climber is quite something. Good on her. It's not like she asked to be born to a wealthy banker. She would be a fool not to take advantage of her opportunities, just like the rest of us. Seeing quite a few of these rich people actually put their money where their mouth is shows why they are successful people. They don't give up, they are determined and know how to really want something.
@mrdarren1045

Good point. I'm tired of reading comments about 'entitled westerners' as if there was something wrong with being wealthy. Seems like a lot of jealous people to me. I admire anyone who puts themselves to such a test, even putting their lives on the line. It seems a more noble way of spending your money than collecting sports cars. Plus it pumps a lot of money into an impoverished region.

So I just watched this on Prime and I can't believe this Ben Webster drags his girlfriend up Everest and then abandons her! His ego is as big as Everest. As I first watched I thought, "God, what a whinny baby-him and his ears." Then he whined all thru the thing and then holds Shauna from going up with Andrew and Hector (Hector's the bomb!) when the weather was perfect and she felt good. Then he takes her up-what 2 hrs- and tells her go up herself cause he's sick. She gets up to CAMP 4! and he tells her she has to go back down and then edits her reaction out so he doesn't look bad. Shauna girl-dump this loser! You were stronger than some of the men-you were doin' and I think the wind would have died down and you could have went up the next day. The sherpas are paid by him so they took his lead-you all could have made it. Kudos to you -you were amazing! And Annabelle-at first I thought "Oh, spoiled rich girl" but she went up like a champ! Annabelle, when you cried at the top, I cried. I was so proud of you and I love you took your "stuff" with you especially lipstick. I believe a girl has to look good no matter where she is. Don't let anyone give you grief about it-it's a female right! And it just shows you that it doesn't matter if you're male or female, you either have the character and mental strength to do Everest or you don't. And I don't for one minute think that any of what you did looked easy. I couldn't do it-not ever. No matter what you do in your life - YOU CLIMBED EVEREST! AWESOME!

k for those who dont know , leave base camp and your on your own , even if your attached to 5 proffessional and 5 sherpas, enter the dead zone your dying in micro seconds, not seconds, your body is eating itself at a phenomenal rate, internally, its a given your going to lose your feet and most of your fingers, your brain is going to swell the size of a grape fruit and if your asked to count to ten, you will reply "Aardvaark" , or " theres no peaches in ice cream" and its all you can say, over and over, on a loop, thats altitude sickness, your tripping like youve dropped 5 pure acid tabs from woodstock, you will be so frozen, your muscle in your legs have frozen solid, like a leg of lamb in the fridge and no longer function, you dont care cause your that exhausted and dehydrated that you just want to lay down and die as quick as possible to get away from the burning pain of the cold, extreme freezing burns, not the other way around, your suffocating and drowning , lung wise at the same time, from blood,. in short, dont enter where you dont belong, its already been climbed, find one that hasnt or go somewhere no other has gone, be a first , not a second or 1134th,the corpses who lead to the summit, can tell you that , asking them on the way up, i can name them all, i document their lasts words and the circumstances in which they die, they all forgot, at 8k NO-ONE , not even god can help you should you get an injury or fall sick ect, you will be left to die, self preservation dictates it, you die or everyone does staying with you and trying to save you, thats why there should only be 8k experienced 5 of the 7 climbers allowed on everest or above, fully accredited and documented climbers/ mountaineers, its not for rich arrogant minded amatuer adventure junkies , who cause they paid an economically poor sherpa to carry all the life saving gear for them"like thats really climbing", who are only one braindead thought of insisting they be addressed as "BWANA" , like a great white hunter, spending precious time even at 7k to posts blogs/vlogs to their deadhead basement dwelling subscribers who liken the great "BWANA" to XXX vin diesel, cant wait to hear their last words, there have been some real good ones.have a safe covid free climb lol,... oh i do climb, but i CLIMB.

I've thought about that too. Ultimately I decided none. That would be the worst suicide method ever. I'd rather arrange myself to be slow roasted over a small fire than die on Everest. I think the causes of death are avalanche, altitude sickness, then exposure, followed by falling off the mountain if I'm not mistaken. I guess I can kind of see jumping off, but the other 3 more likely ways to die- no way- I just can't see anyone choosing to die in those ways.

Those who are climbing the Everest escorted by the Sherpas are just like those people organizing the Safari with those African slaves. Whether they like it or not , these climbers can be judged as only taking advantage of the Sherpas who are doing all the dirty jobs and almost treat the climbers as toddlers. If any climbing enthusiast wants to conquer the Everest, he must be the one to carry all the things he needs to survive and not depend on anyone to escort him up and down the mountain. The real test for endurance can only be measured if a climber can summit and come back down by himself. The trending nowadays is to climb the mountain with as many Sherpas one can get as escorts and if they succeed to go up and then down safely they claim they are good mountaineers.

What is your point? This comment was not lamenting the terrible life of a Sherpa. It was just pointing out that these climbers pay other people to do all the real work, then act like their Sir Edmund Hillary or something. You made this same comment earlier and I thought it was odd. Here, it really makes no sense. If you have something to say, you should just say it. Make your point and round out your argument. Just throwing a comment like this in replies where it has nothing to do with the OP's point does not get your point across- whatever that may be.

I’m sorry, but this is like the 5th video of Everest with people that don’t belong in the trip. It’s a disaster in the making. If you haven’t climbed the 7 highest peaks and aren’t in elite shape you don’t belong there. If you still have frostbite from your last climb you don’t belong there. It is hard enough for experts when they loose feeling because of cold. Also, if your not confident of your abilities, go home. You’re risking your life and your team’s. I was impressed with Annabelle’s crawling on the ladder. Do what you have to do!!! If she can problem solve & climb she may just do it!’

It's nice that all these people going for their "dream" leave their garbage behind making the mountain look like a dump. Typical selfish humans not respecting nature. Not to mention the sherpas that risk their lives doing that job because there isn't a lot of well-paying jobs in Nepal! So, to support themselves and their family they continually risk their lives for foreign vacationers. The experienced climbers are one thing but anyone with enough money can go. That is appalling and puts others even more at risk. I think we need to think about how ethical this commercial climbing of the most dangerous mountain on earth has become.

@poutinedream5066
@poutinedream5066 4 года назад
You just don't participate if you don't feel comfortable. Most of it has more to do with bonding and honoring the Sherpas and their beliefs. It's not like all these Christian's are forsaking their faith. Still, I'm sure there are some who just are not comfortable with these rituals, and they just sit them out. Others, I'm sure do all the local rituals, then hold hands and pray together as Christians. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Sherpas after the Christians participate in their rituals, join the prayer circles and participate in the Christian rituals. I would guess by sharing in each other's rituals, there is a sense of respect, trust, and equality between the Sherpas and the climbers. These things would be extremely important at 10 thousand meters.

More and more, however, the nonsense that is openly expressed by those of faith, and often preached I might add, insults my senses as much as if any person of mature age were to believe in Santa Claus and hope to make the "Nice" list. I did not borrow my mentality from any other person, nor have I been inspired by the cause of atheists, who often are just as fanatical. I am an independent thinker in my own right and couldn't care less how much of an asshole I sound like, just as you don't either. +jaelynn zee Oddly enough, I find that mountain environment is pretty much one of the few places where the fear creates the need for such prayers/religions. Unless you have been in a near death situation it is almost impossible to understand these. Just imagine you are hanging from a cliff, trying to use your last drop of energy to avoid falling, I bet you would start praying...been there

jolie robles you find a bunch of Nepalis you probably cant even understand doing some mumbo-jumbo about climbing that mountain they see as god offensive? Or just that Westerners are willing to join in? That it was put in the video? Get A Grip. Who gives a shit. The Sherpas wanna put some flags up and burn some shit before they climb that's their business and is in no way offensive. I really dont understand what you are so butthurt about?

Your comment caught my attention. When I watched Touching the Void, Joe Simpson was in the same situation but said the opposite. I did not expect that. Kind of caught me off gaurd. He said he knew that there was no God. When you die, that is it. You just die. I still think about it. Dont know why.

I might be beaten with a stick for saying this but... How is it even an an achievement someone gets praise for worldwide when the Sherpa's are what makes or breaks your expedition? It feels very exploitative. From other documentaries these men do most of the hard work and are paid pennies compared to the big wigs from these companies. Maybe it's ''good money'' for them but still not an equal divide by any means. And 90% of the documentaries I have watched, their demise is brushed off... we never hear an interview with a wife or friend or son of the sherpa - always interviews with rich friends of the rich people who in many cases had no business being anywhere near Everests vicinity. Sorry, but it seems like a joke when your success is off other people's back and safety, for what?
