Warning: I was stationed in West Germany from 1977-1980. World War II unexploded ordnance was being found, sometimes the hard way, (KABOOM.) Digging up old battlefields can be dangerous. Don't die in a war that ended decades before you were born!

Seems like quite a rare medal, seeing as how it was in the first year of the war before it was really even considered a world war

1939 was stamped on most medals permanently. As that’s the year the war started, and it’s celebrated. The same way the WWI medals had 1914 stamped on them no matter what year.

Any metal you brush with brass bristles will get a coat of brass on it,giving it a brassy or golden color. It is a process called burnishing. A stiff plastic brush will not change the color of metals..

Mahesh kumar well,I can tell you more:I have a rifle which is currently operational and runs great,though it was buried for 102 years since it was lost in year 1915 until it was found in year 2017!So,as the round was chambered and it had the muzzle cap-that preserved it's bore and chamber absolutely intact.And I swear it is now completely operational and I am firing it literally like if it was from warehouse!

There is so much unexploded ordinance on those old battlefields and buildings that it is not worth the trouble to dig up. Unless, you are suicidal.
@alfasud1972
@alfasud1972 5 лет назад
Even if you know a lot about old amo it is tricky, but these kids appear to don know a lot about them, so they take a high risk holding unstable ordinance. Let's hop they do not encounter fosfor bullets or bombs.

@@mdww2battlegrounds It is so little compared to the dangerous work you do in trying to preserve a period of mankind’s worst deeds in history. You aren’t given enough recognition for this type of work. Especially giving those who fell in battle the respect they deserved by a proper burial. It has to give you the ultimate and saddest feeling at the same time you’ve found those lost by time. And the family’s who’s loved ones surly have passed now, without ever knowing you found their son, brother or father. That is extremely sad in seeing you’ve found a missing hero’s bones and the body of someone who didn’t want to be there to start with. Happy new year gents.👍🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Although fairly dangerous, these rounds are unlikely to detonate and its highly unlikely youd be able to get one to detonate by throwing it. However in theory one of thse could detonate at any time, they quite often do explode during forest fires.

There's 2 junkyards or were, found a Panter D/T with a VW on it's turret, a lot of shot up U.S.vehicles, howitzer tracked vehicles, 3/4 tons, jeeps, 2 1/2 tons etc...
@blipblip88

It's somewhat interesting to me that so many military artifacts from Germany and the allied armies during the war were stamped with a date. I wonder how many non military/civilian products were also marked in this way at the time? I would guess fewer, but why? Thoughts?

The detonators contain mercury, which exploded when struck. The same idea as a priming cap in the center of cartridge case bases. They are FAR more dangerous, unstable, and poisonous than gunpowder. Primers (which is what these are) of ALL types should be handled with extreme care.
