Discraft Disc Golf Clinic: Approach Basics 

I am almost 50 years old and although I played about 10 year ago for the first time, I took a break for almost 9 years. Your video on the basics was monumental in helping me get better distance and I plan on practicing my approach shot today. Thank you so much for taking the time to help those of us who needed help with the mechanics of this wonderful sport.

You are absolutely correct on the "different distance for different people" thing so it is truly hard to narrow that down. I am a longer putter than most and will generally use a putting motion from about 75-80 feet and in. However, from 75 to 125 I may try to "play catch" with the basket and use a little nose up air bounce toss at the target as if I was trying to throw a disc to friend and not have him move. After that, I am trying to get the disc as close to the basket as possible-approach.

How does he throw with such power as buttery as he does? It looks fantastic. I'm a scratch golfer and have just really got into this and am EXTREMELY fascinated

@CaptnCrohns Darn straight! You have no idea how hard it is to keep my legs out of the sun for long enough to get them pasty white and then hit the sun with the proper sun blocking socks. Thanks for noticing as I am a fiend when it comes to high fashion tanning.

@selkiemoony Sure, a putter is a great approach disc if that is what is in your comfort zone. I currently use a Soft Banger GT for shorter straight approaches and a Soft Focus for ones with a little hyzer. For wind situations I turn to the ESP Zone (saved my bacon at the Memorial) as it will cut through the wind and still hyzer in. When I say short I am talking 125 to 200 feet. Longer than that I generally step up to a mid so that I can throw it more lightly and have more control.

I have an esp pulse great disc goes very very far and very very fast. its over stable but nothing like a predator. i think its a 1.6 on discrafts scale. Its a good disc id recommend it. Oh!! and there is a very small thumb track on the top of the disc. makes it very comfortable in your hand.

Awesome instructions, going to play in a little bit here. Ill try and incorporate some of those techniques.

Can we get a similar video for side arm players?

what does anyone think about the ESP Pulse??? ive been thinking about picking one up. also i can throw a surge about 300 - 350 feet, will it be an ideal disc for me??

I personally don't think you should ONLY sidearm. You should work on being more versatile. I personally drive with a sidearm throw, and approach/putt with a backhand throw. I find the backhand is WAY better for trying to be accurate, and the sidearm throw is just really effortless for me to make a decent drive.

Informative, and well spoken, but you really have to demonstrate in these videos. We need to see the methods demonstrated. I like Nikko's instructional videos, he shows you how he throws.
