This video follows 15 year old high school sophomore Reanna Wurst as she practices the fundamentals of throwing discus. It focuses on how to throw discus with track and field tips from elite discus coach Mike Torie.
I went to a throwing camp over this past summer. Up in Rhode Island. I learned more about the discus and Javelin. In my sophomore year my personal record was only 82.5 feet because of the camp and because of me practicing by myself after school with no coaching. My new personal record is 108 feet roughly. I've gained almost 30 feet. I can't wait for this season.
I’m a freshman in highschool, i’ve only thrown this year and my 8th grade year. i was one spot away from making state last year and am so pumped this year. There is a meet down in New Orleans and only the best of the best get to go, BUT GUESS WHAT?! IM GOING i haven’t learned the full spin yet, which i am sooo eager to learn. But good luck to all of the throwers and athletes out there!
kendall owens I’m a thrower in Louisiana and I’m starting this year with is my 8th grade year the school year just started to I’m training I threw my first discus over the fence and didn’t get it back so I’m waiting for a new one to come in
i’m an 8th grade boy who just got done with track. i placed gold at my league championship with a new PR of 126’9”. i hope to have good coaching like this entering my high school years. keep up the good work Reanna!
Nice progress! You can really see how the athlete is thinking about throwing technique herself and not just whining if something doesn't work. That's why she is progressing 👍🏻💪🏻
Thanks for sharing Reanna's journey. My 9 y.o daughter is throwing and learning - I'm doing coaching courses to learn too. She's gone off the rails a bit, trying to do too much at once, so we spent a morning watching RU-vid videos to refocus and your video came up.
Thank you Coach Torie and Reanna for putting this together so my new throwers can see the dedication it takes to become a Great thrower! My athletes can see the progress and that work needs to be done outside of practice. It is good to see a High School athlete and not some Olympian ...brings it all into perspective. @@BigMac8008 yes! opening up to soon, or as i call it. not staying back with the discus. she has a penchat for dipping left shoulder into center and yanking the left arm to make the turn. when that left arm goes crazy, the right arm does too. by the time its time to throw, her throwing arc of the discus is down to about 150% and her left foot has no time to get to the front. she ends up trying to arm toss the discus across her body---result is a clanger or sector foul
You have to pick your feet up, and drive when coming from the back of the ring, the more you wait to settle- the more you’ll slow down, she needs to drop down when in a power position.
I'm not much of an expert but I've been doing a lot of research and I recently learned how to throw a discus so you can't take my word for that much. I know that she needs a better blocking foot or strong, but other than that the technique is pretty good but there is always room for improvement on technique but it's good from all the research I've done. Again I'm not much of an expert so don't take my word for it
I'm a high school shot-put and discus thrower myself... I'm watching all of these form videos, and practice 6 times a week, but I'm not seeing much improvement. Do you have any tips that could help me? I'm only a freshmen, but I know I have so much potential and desire to throw in college.
Hey Alea I'm happy to see so much enthusiasm in such a young athlete like yourself! As you may have seen in the video I had a tremendous coach who taught me how to effectively throw the disc and I'd encourage you to seek someone like that as well, especially if you are going to seriously pursue throwing in college. Also, if you are not already doing so try to get a routine lifting schedule, which is also something a trainer or coach could help you with. My coach mentioned that lifting can seriously improve your marks after you have dialed in your form. I'm not sure what position you throw in discus, but as far as the power position here are several tips. The first thing to remember is to snap the left heel down so that the right can come up. Lastly, when coming around with both arms be sure to pull back on your left arm aggressively and finish with your right to complete your throw. I hope this helped and I wish you well! If you have anymore questions I will try my best to help! :) -Reanna Wurst
there was a bunch of snow where I threw and I ended up throwing the discus 80 ft ( I’m in sixth grade ). How long do you think I could throw if there wasn’t any snow
I'm doing discus and shot put for high school and I'm a junior where can i find you so you can help me? I'm a leftie and the only leftie for track in schurr high
Thank you The music was created by my dad for me for "Discus". He's a movie composer that does alot of stuff for Marvel, DC, Lego etc. I don't think he's released it yet beyond my movie. Good luck with your throwing! - Reanna
I am amazed by this fact, such a great music composer he is. I loved this music, feels like Hans Zimmer score. If I want to hear your dad's music scores can you please share them on this channel.
I’m in 7th grade and I throw 70 ft and I’m looking for new techniques to use to help me throw further... comment any if there is a way that you can help me. (I do a half spin)
Watch a lot of films of Perkovic and copy her style as close as is possible and release velocity. Learn the Olympic lifts speed squats and speed pulls and you will be on your way. Throwing is about maximum controlled velocity.
Hey Keith sorry this is late, but I am not too sure what is a good mark for guys, but I would seek a coach or mentor to guide you if you have not already. Keep working hard! :) -Reanna
Keith Rager that's a tad above average my pr freshman year was 96 and I just finished Sophomore season with a 113 pr. I'm going for 130 next year at least
Straight left let moving into standing or is that just us Brits, another thing, feet too close together when in standing position, just questions, cause I've been hurling for years, release angle at 45 right, or is it just me 😂
@ak_hailey so utterly incorrect, the spin should only aid in the transfer of power from the legs up thru the chest muscles into the arm. if the spin is not correct or done too fast, the positions will not be attained, and slow down or even eliminate any momentum and force put upon the discus.
i noticed that on a few attempts also. which coincided with "stepping in the bucket". that in turn leads to the left leaning delivery.... that needs to be corrected soon.
