I don't care if he doesnt want to do media interviews at his own personal private event. During the regular season ask him all the questions you want but this seems like a non story that the media is pushing for. And then they do a surprised pikachu face when some players cite them as a reason for not wanting to come and play here.
I don't necessarily disagree with you with regards to the media but Mitch did not do himself any favours here. He's a grown-ass man and needs the media on his side. It seemed like every time he was paraded in front of a camera during the season, something stupid fell out of his mouth, his attitude was terrible - he's kind of his own worst enemy. For this charity event, it simply needed to be stated before media availability that no questions regarding contract etc will not be taken, full stop. Although the hatred he's getting now about being solely responsible for playoff failures is total trash, this tension with the fanbase started when he held out for the big dollars, totally his right but with great power comes great responsibility. He's a leader on this team and will be on any team he's on, so act like it. He's a great player, don't want to lose him but won't cry myself to sleep of he moves on. I'd be willing to bet that he won't really love the anonymity that will come with playing in another market. He likes being a somebody. Be careful what you wish for....
@@morgettable Those are all valid points. I'm certainly not a Marner fanboy who defends every action he does. His attitiude is horrible in interviews and his PR game doesn't help him with fans. The media can grill him in a NHL sanctioned setting. I never liked media asking questions about contracts or rumors at functions which are not NHL sanctioned because they take away from the broader picture which is raising money for a good cause which is what the charity event did.
good for mitchy, the media would have come in and blasted the poor kid about his contract talks instead of talking about the celebration and his fund raiser. i kinda wish everyone would just leave this guy alone and let the chips fall where they may
The thing is Marner wasn’t even at a team event. He was at an optional charity event. I can understand the negativity if he cancelled an annual charity event but he just didn’t want media around to have to deal with which is his right in the summer. Besides it would just serve to steer the narrative away from the cause. In any case it just seems like some people in the media feel rather entitled. To the point where it’s laughable.
This David Alter guy just seems salty he isn't allowed to pry into someones life for a single day a year. There is no minimum...I am not even a huge Marner fan but the media crying like it is mandatory to let them in when everyone knows they would have just ruined the event asking him about trades and shit is hilarious. He has no obligations to let the media in to a charity event. This is hilarious watching these gossip obsessed reporters cry about not getting to write their hit piece.
Interesting how Toronto media is doing their best to alienate Marner. He has a NMC and said he intends to play in Toronto this year. All the media is doing is making it more likely Marner will do a Sundin and just walks. Why would Marner let the media ask the same question over and over and over and over again? If the perception of Marner is getting worst it is thanks to the media, Poor Nylander when Mitch is gone after next year he will be the whipping boy again.
The media has been highly combative to this player for the last year. They have on his ass for the last year and have made him the team scapegoat for all team failures. So how about you treat him with respect, and maybe he might start treating the media with respect... 😮
Marner said his teams ownership group not to show up. Rogers and Bell own the team and own the two major Sports broadcasting companies in Canada. He's not doing himself any favors
Just like how us leafs fans are looking for a culture change we also need a change with “this is what comes with being a leaf you have responsibilities to the media” this has to stop!!! I find that Alter is more wrong than right in his predictions. Low talent. Media needs to be respectful of a Players privacy in the off season. Marner owes this guy nothing... Given Marners situation, with the Contract, media, fans, pressure, he should keep his exposure to a minimum.
Did mitch do alot of media this season?. Did he even have to do any press after the last game? This team has protected him very well over his time with the leafs. I get why he didn't want media at this event but it's not like he is asked to do much with the media through the course of the season. I think matthews, Morgan Riley, John Tavares talk way more than he does. I could be wrong but just my opinion.

If Marner ends up invoking his NMC at some point or has already done so then so be it. Don’t get upset with him get upset with the incompetent team management including Shanahan that gave it to him. It’s one thing to give players limited no trade clauses but too many full no movements are crippling for the franchise
Ppl who say the players don’t sign in Canada cuz of the media is Bs, imo. They don’t sign in Canada cuz of the taxes, almost half of their money gets taken. And no offence to the Stanley cup champions of the last cpl of years, but unfortunately, no one cared that they won. If players can win in Canada, it’ll be on a whole different level.

Because his salary is only $750k and all his signing bonuses that make up the rest of the $10.9m have already been paid. The Leafs would only save $750k against the cap.

We are lacking in the last 2 categories, heck, leafs never had a Norris trophy winner in their entire history...for us to win Woll has to A. remain injury free and B. pull a Binnington type season. We need a Pietreangelo or a Hedman type dman which we don't have so, we're still lacking in many departments. This team is built wrong which makes absolutely no sense since management should know better and with all of our money, management should be the Cadillac of management, Shanahan has been a Chevette at best...lol.
