The OverDrive guys get fired up talking about the latest news on Mitch Marner turning down offers from the Maple Leafs for seven and eight years at $11 million.
If i was in dubas shoes, if mitch comes back at 11m for 7 id tell him no, the deals 9.5m for 5-6 years, if he doesnt take it then dump him in europe where he gets 1m maybe, youll miss a return on him but then youll be able to sign muzzin and barrie and keep the team together and it shows the rfas they cant push teams around
I agree losing marner for nothing isn't horrible. It means you can develop rookies, sign other players, keep your existing talent and give out performance bonuses. 3 players at over 10 or 11 million an piece will never win the cup in the cap world. Hockey is an team sport
What would be a good trade for him? Keller and a 2nd? You figure who ever gets to play with JT will be elevated. I haven’t watched a lot of Marner so I don’t know his value.
Where am I? Shitsfucked regardless he’s a nhl player who should be able to stand up against mommy and daddy and it’s his call and the end of the day he could’ve agreed to terms if he wanted too
Yep, the fuckin players in the NBA and NFL are taking over and it's chaos.Players have too much power. The only solution is the cap should be higher. But Marner's camp knows Seattle money coming to the league and Leafs plus a new Tv deal will bring more money. Leafs can offer bonus money upfront plus incentives if over 90 points $2 million in cash. Marner will easily make money on endorsements but his agent won't unless his agent is negotiating endorsement deals. Can't Dubas offer Marner agent a cottage in Muskoka lol.
@@scaletipping4715 every team has had years where we were the laughing stock. Buffalo has been bad for much longer than expected, and I'm not so sure they'll be contenders this year. But we are on an upward trend. Remember, for a long time the Sabres were a very formidable team. I like Botteril, he is making the right moves but he also isn't sacrificing young talent for rental players
I don’t understand why Leaf fans translate 1st round exits to winning lmao. You’ve won the same amount of playoff series’ in the last 6 years as the Arizona Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres. Zero.
No his feelings were hurt because he's not Matthews & his dad says he should be captain not that injury prone American who didn't even cheer for the Leafs
@SharpPwner Marner also had Tavares on his line all season with 47 goals. And Matthews had much less help on his line. That shows Matthews is able to carry the load of a first line, Marner needs Tavares. I don't think Marner gets 68 assists without Tavares on his line. I also think Matthews has better projections, this is why nobody would be happy to pay Marner the same as Matthews. It's just facts. Marner deserves a pay day, but not the amount he is asking for. At least not with the Leafs.
@@TrAvi5link Dubas created this problem by overpaying for matthews in the first place , if Matthews can get 5 year 11mil , Mitch certainly can , because to this point in there careers Marner has been the better player , and got the highest point total on the team last year.
@@stpbasss3773 first on the team in points, played the PK. The leafs were 4 points out of missing the playoffs thos year. I guarantee that without marner the team doesn't have those 4 points
Imagine adding 25 points from your previous season when playing alongside one of the best centres in the game, while barely increasing his production. Then thinking youre just as good and deserve equal money.
John B 11 mil for a winger with a below average AHL shot & back 2 back games with no shots in 2019 playoffs...good riddance! Let some other team pay for all his productive shinny (regular) seasons.
He's good but not that good yet because I guarantee you once he hits his prime you going to look at it like wow I was a retard for thinking he wasn't worth that
Coming from someone who is not a Leafs fan I was behind Marner and applauded him for holding his ground all this time. The fact he rejected those offers are insane. This kid is gonna destroy his reputation. Even if he does sign, I bet there will be some boos for him on Leafs opening night.
I won't boo, but I will never love him like I would Matthews. Just think how crazy Marner's next deal will be if he signs for over $11m now and he puts up better production.
People will forget about in time if he signs. They might be mad at first, but when he scores goals people will get over it. If this ends in a trade, he’s going to have a rough time coming back to Toronto as a visitor.
I'm partially on your side, yet I dig a bit deeper, and find that at an earlier than normal age, these kids have been groomed. Go back to the early 90's. I was 17, playing Jr.B, enjoying a pretty successful season. Did I have a shot at "The Show" ? Hellz no !! So, I could approach the game differently. Enjoy it. Appreciate the lifestyle of a Junior Hockey player in a city of 300,000, mostly good hockey fans !!!
Mitch Marner is NOT a team player. It’s evident in this fiasco. Part of the reason why the Penguins have a handful of Stanley Cups in recent years is because Crosby took a bit of a discount. You do what it takes to win. Some of these younger guys are divas, and Marner is one of them.
Adrian Iannacito the pens really lucked out with how everything happened. To have Malkin, Crosby and letang at those contracts and values is a steal! It’s paid off too. I think taking less is a lost practice no a days.
I didn't know Crosby did that, definitely some sympathy points for him, and I'm not even a penguins fan. Money devours every better value when greed starts to emerge. I wish Crosby all the success he deserves for that. Hampus Lindholm I am pointing at you as well.
Except Crosby didn’t take a discount... people don’t say McDavid took a discount even though their cap hits are almost exactly the same percentage of the cap at the time of signing.
ODogg is right. Ship Marner out, love the kid but can’t stand his dad and agent. Marner needs a new agent and tell his dad to piss off. 11M USD is a ton of coin.
Plus that level of greed would also diminish the leafs chance for improvement, becaus that is just salary cap thievery. Greed. Not hockey. Lindolm did a similar thing to the Ducks last season, more focused on the money than on his skills. Should have trained more than being focused on his income. I would dump such players right away, not worth it and just hurting the team.
@@millionfish I have always been human, does that mean....? xD Well I hope this is not all a circus. Regarding some decisions around the league for a couple of years it sometimes surely seems so. If they really still hire him for that money - any team for that matter - that will tell the story.
"only 21m combined" oilers need a lot more than leon and connor, a lot of work to do on their roster. mcdavid could be long gone before the team is competitive again
McDavid Deserves Better in all fairness JT and Matthews are at 22.634 , it’s still not bad for for two elite centres considering one was a FA and the cap increases over when your players sign.
Trade him for Matthews’ bestie Matt tkachuk !! You can sign him for a long time At lessssss money and he provides goal scoring and protects his teammates! Something Mitch will never do
What makes you think Calgary would make a trade for Marner knowing how much Marner wants to be paid? Just a question...neither Calgary or Toronto are my favorites regardless so no, I'm not picking sides or anything....
@@moriellymoproblems7842 theres still a month until hockey and calgary has 7 million in cap space in case you were actually curious and not being passive agressive
You think Marner is going to sit out the season? I can't imagine him being that stupid. But I'd rather he sits out without an contract then have the leafs sign him for 11 million at 7 years. He's good but not that good, that's Sydney Crosby good. What's Crosby making 7 million an year?

@@eNes-kc8oi I get it but honesty at this point the kid should f off dont get me wrong I love marner and his style of play but the leafs have been more then fair with the offers they gave him 11 mil is tied for the 4th highest nhl paid player not only that but the leafs have also offered 3 years for 8.75 mil like at this point it's just greed and to compare urself to Matthew's like how unprofessional is that the first year they played matthews and marner where healthy through the whole season Matthew's got more the last 2 seasons matthews has had 2 unlucky injury where marner hasnt not to mention ur playing on the top line with taveras who I'm sure helps u get half ur points right there to it's just all greed at this point I have lost some respect for marner rejecting 5 + offered since the off season in my opinion if marner is there for opening trade him and make a offer sheet for Linae cause I guarantee u anyone playing on that top line with hyman and tavares will get points and not only that but u hve a chance to play with a Stanley cup caliber team and ur refusing dude u dont deserve to play for the team
11:03 "How about being a reasonable person?!" Right there. That's all there is to it. Sure you can hold out for OCT and see if you can get THE most possible, while simultaneously knee-capping your team cap-wise. Single players don't win a Cup, teams do. TRADE HIM and offer sheet Rantanen or Tkachuk for a steep $ their teams can't handle.
Lol, if the leafs offer sheet a steep number, theyd have to pay upwards of 4 1st rounders, you goof. Easier to 1 for 1 trade him for rantanen or point and get them to sign
Exactly. Between both Cup finalists last year, only 3 players total made more than 7 mil(cap hit wise). In the final 4, no one making more 8 was present. Aho just got 8.5, I'd say that's good.
Why should he take a discount? You guys have no loyalty look at what you just said. Look at marleau leaving the only team he's known to get bought out. Look at sundin didn't get to finish his career with the only team he's known and was captain of. It goes both ways.
@@are3287 if he has the most points on the team than you're overpaying other players, the problem is that the fans don't see that. Last year you guys didn't mind overpaying nylander and now it's a problem somehow?

Dylan Evans I’m in the same boat. Been waiting all summer in hopes of grabbing a Marner jersey. In the last few weeks I’ve been starting to reconsider. Looking like I’ll be going with a Matthews👌🏼
Hope so - hockey will continue with or without him. As long as he's not ready to sign whatever Toronto is throwing his way, I would rather see him in another jersey. He deserves better... including better fans.
@@d.l.r.6256 lmao he can go to the Swiss league then cuz the Leafs have his rights and his insane contract demands have tanked any and all trade value for him. So he can accept the Leafs deal, or sit. He's not Matthews
Goalie Dad 33 why did u guys pay Matthews so god damn much. Marner is the better player with the puck on his stick all the time he should get paid equally as such
GoldGravity exactly, he was my favourite leaf, but i told everyone if he didnt come back to Toronto, i would probably boo him at a game when he played them (same with willie last year), but now im not so sure he’s my favourite player anymore
He is going to make more than that in sponsorship. He won't get that kind of sponsor money anywhere else. Not that it should affect his pay/contract, but Marner risks losing money if they trade him.
@@Paulafan5 I can think of few. Red Bull, Beats By Dre, Intact Insurance, BF Goodrich Tires , Deacons Moving & Storage Little Debbie's Snack Cakes Tab, Daewoo, Ticonderoga Pencils; Jovan Musk , Drakkar Noir. Anybody who can't figure out why Marner gets the hate he's currently getting need to watch this clip from four years ago. It will suddenly make perfect sense.
Nathan MacKinnon took team friendly deals, he said I haven't accomplished anything in 6 yrs . He never once held the Avalanche hostage, and after he won the cup, he still took less . 7 yrs later, 5 with M M& N, they tall ook their money up front Management did not bawk and refused to draw a line in the sand. Now 3 now trade clauses come in on July 1st . Someone doesn't know how to play poker or have been taken and sold a bill of goods.
This shit breaks my heart man, I’m from London, I grew up watching this man play in the OHL for my favourite team. I was so excited to see him tear up the nhl for my leafs. This whole thing has just been so disappointing reports last year were saying he’d be taking a major discount to make sure he could win a cup here. Guess that’s not gonna happen now
@@davidkruse4030 I agree. Just certainly “no favours” were made with sweet baby Kyle D. Not saying I could have negotiated any better, but it’s not… ideal certainly.
Had Dubas not mismanaged the Nylander negotiation this debacle would have been averted. Dubas is weak and ineffectual. Nylander's camp were clear victors last fall. Marner's advisors assuredly remember. Losing the negotiations with Nylander and Marner were not the biggest loss; losing firm negotiator Lou was the real loss.
I'm not a Leafs fan but I'm pissed off on their behalf. You know who else has every right to be losing his patience? John Tavares. JT should have by now said to MM "look buddy, we all want you to get a good deal, but you and me were one of the best 1-2's in the game last year, I need to know if I can get mentally prepared for this season with peace of mind you'll be there, or if I need to start preparing differently"
That's a damned good point. I have nothing but the utmost respect for JT. Wish Marner would borrow a page from that book. Ah. Maybe one day soon the Leaf's will beat Marner's team in the cup final. Nothing sweeter.
As a habs fan I love this. Becoming a big marner fan. More greed Mitch. Mess up the leafs cap. You have earned every penny. Hold out man. They caved for Nylander. They will for you.
AtotheK not obsessed at all. Just enjoying the circus that is the TML. Leafs didn’t learn their lesson with nylander and now go down the same road with marner. Get yours Mitch. Bleed the cap dry. 😂😂😂😂
The leafs have a good team without Marner , Now that I find out he turned down 11 for 8 years . We learned a lot about who he really is . The offer needs to come down now if he misses a day of camp . Apparently We need to hope for leaf nation to lose this guy to an offer sheet . We lost the best contract in recent years with kadri and now we are in this boat ??? Really Is dubas / shanny really doing a good job or making a mess of the payoff for being a bottom feeder for years ??? They better let marner walk if need be . And focus on the original shanaplan
Bruins top 3 makes about 20 million against the cap Leafs top 3 makes 33.5 million against the cap say what you will about the Bruins but they manage their cap very well. Pastrnak only makes 6.666 million a season against the cap and he's a better overall player than Marner.
I'm sure you guys have another Russian 7th round pick who is going to be the best player in the league. You'll learn to suffer through some lean years, unless you're not a real fan and abandon your team through the rebuild.
Am I the only one who thinks Matthews shouldn’t have even made that amount of money. The fact marner declined 11 mil a year for 7 years is hilarious. I feel bad for leaf fans.
@@are3287 maybe on an 8 year deal, but Matthews on a 5 year deal is definitely worth 11.6, especially considering he'll be a 26 year old UFA and thus more likely to sign at max term with a lower caphit.

O-Dogg you absolutely nailed it. I'd say 3 options Mitch, 11x7, 11x8, or Switzerland. And I'd add to that, if you don't sign before opening night, you're missing the entire season and you can sign for 10x7 in 2020/2021.This is getting ridiculous.
Anything in the $11/per any season should be off the table.....7,8 and 9 on a three year deal..... and it's on the table for 24 hrs.... After that..... Swiss cheese......or sit.... But the next deal is 5 years at 6.5..... and then you see how he plays..... If crap.... Trade him.....with that contract he will go.....everyone else out there is waiting on the Leafs to settle the RFA situation.....so Toronto should force the issue and then those other guys will see what's in the wind..... Toronto unfortunately has got in this spot because of Willie Nylander....
The problem is that dubas has backed down and overpaid everyone else so marner wants the same. Dubas ruined the chance of this core winning the cup when he overpaid on Tavares
07foxmulder I have read comments from Leaf fans who acted like it would be no problem to get Marner signed. I never saw this as being an easy process. He might sign, but it hasn’t been easy up to this point.
Marner did not learn anything from watching Nylander become the whipping boy. He was arguably the fan favourite being a hometown kid, now the fans are against him. Trade him for a stud defenceman, the Leafs have enough firepower without him.
It's disgusting how selfish fans are. They want players to sign for half of what they're worth. It's a bad look. It an even worse look when those fanboys are in the media.
@@Paulafan5 lol half of what marner is worth are you kidding 11 million over 7 years not an issue with fans or the leafs. That was a generous offer all the way

I hope I live to see another Cup in NC, while watching lots of those folks eat a ton of crow. Bye, y'all.
It blows my mind that our hometown kid who grew up wanting to be a leaf his whole life gets drafted 4th overall by his hometown team and pulls this bs his goal should be to win that cup
So, all Toronto born players should play for the minimum in Toronto? They have a limited window to make money, thanks to the entry level caps. He was underpaid for years. Why shouldn't he get fair market value?
@@Paulafan5 And lets be real, the kid isn't an 11m/yr player, just flat out isn't, that is an extremely generous offer that he should've taken, but he's more interested in term, he wants to be walked into UFA while making around that cash, he's thinking about the next big contract when he's a UFA. Nobody is saying he should be payed league minimum, they are just saying this is a hometown kid, it's like every Canadian kids dream to bring home the cup, and he's passing on that because of more money.
