The Jesus movement did not die with its leader. Rather, there arose a belief that although Christ was killed, he was also exalted. A number of people came to proclaim that God raised Jesus from the dead. What did that mean to various people in the ancient world, and what does resurrection mean for us today? Should we act on it as metaphorical vindication of Jesus’ message or as a literal revivification of Jesus’ corpse? How do Western Christians differ from Eastern Christians in our beliefs about all this? These are some of the questions we’ll get into.
Dr. John Dominic Crossan earned his doctor of divinity from St. Patrick’s College in Maynooth, Ireland. He was a Catholic priest for about a decade and a Catholic monk for almost two decades; now he’s emeritus professor of religious studies at DePaul University. His reconstruction of the historical Jesus centers around Jesus as a Mediterranean Jewish peasant who preached and practiced his vision of God’s rule as immediately and universally accessible. He rebuked social norms, expressed the rule of the Father as a present, unbrokered reality, and modeled nonviolent resistance of injustice. That injustice includes when he was killed on the cross. Now, to affirm that he was raised from the dead means that we choose to follow his way of peace and participate in making the world a more just place. Thus, Dr. Crossan sees the resurrection in a metaphorical light.
In our discussion together, I offer some questions and objections: what did resurrection mean to ancient Jews and Gentiles? If it's a metaphor, is it grounded in anything historical? What is the significance of Jesus for Christians today if his corpse decayed long ago? If you were there with a camera, what would you have seen from his passion and to Easter "Sunday"?
