One of my favourite videos you did was one where you talked about All Systems Red, you had such joy and passion in your expression that made it so much fun! I subscribed and went back and watched all your videos! I think if we can just enjoy ourselves, people see that and enjoy too.

Honestly, I just tend to watch people who seem like I could be friends with in real life. Usually chill people with interesting opinions about all kinds of books. As someone else said in the comments, I don't really care for "trendy" books or videos. (Except certain tags, which are fun.) And don't pressure yourself! Your videos are awesome, no matter when they come out. :D

I've been trying to type out a comment and struggled to find the right words. Then you come along Anna B. with exactly what I wanted to say. I agree that I enjoy watching someone who feels like a friend. I am a pretty hardcore introvert, which in turn makes me socially awkward even in the best of circumstances, so I spend a lot of time on RU-vid to get some semblance of social interaction. BookswithEmilyFox is one of my favorite channels because it feels comfortable and I trust that I will be entertained and informed at the same time. I appreciate the genuine reviews, creative challenges, thoughtful opinions, and varied genres. I particularly enjoy the quirky sometimes awkward humor and adore the frenemy relationship with snowglobe, Emily. So, as far as I'm concerned just keep it up. Keep being honest, keep trying new things, keep being awkward, and keep making awesome videos!

I honestly couldn't care less about how many books a booktuber can read each week. To me, it's the authenticity I see in your love for books that keeps me coming back to your channel. Also - great format, I like these enteractive videos, keep em coming. Thank you for the video, stay safe

I'm here definitely because of your personality and how you review the books you read. We don't have the same taste in books generally, although that could change because I'm just getting back into reading and your sci-fi recs do sound interesting. I find that I watch different booktubers for different reasons, be it personality, similar taste to mine or aesthetics, and I don't expect everyone I watch to have all those things combined, that's the beauty of youtube and being able to watch different people! Especially for me, I just love hearing people talk about books, whether they love them or not, so long as they can articulate well enough what it is about them that they loved or hated.

The ideal booktuber doesn't exist. That said I don't like it when booktubers read books only because they are 'trendy' and not because they are interested in the topic. Another thing I don't like is book hauls. I have often the impression that booktubers (a good chunk, at least) buy a lot of books just for the sake of views. And it becomes obvious when you see all those unhaul videos out there.
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox 4 года назад
I personally like hauls but I can understand why it's frustrating to see the books being unhauled not long after. I've made it a goal to read all (or most!) of the books I get rid of but if someone's taste has changed it's okay to not keep the books too!

One of the reasons you're one of my go-to booktubers is because you don't stop yourself from saying what you really think. It's not easy to go against the flow. I have read some of your recommendations and they're always great! Keep it going, you're awesome.

I consistently follow only a handful of channels and yours is definitely up there. Why? 1. Because you are the only booktuber (for me at least) who is honest about her opinion. There have been many times when I have read a book because of the hype around it on booktube only to be disappointed and question myself if I read the same book as the other people. People overhype books too much. Not you. You say it like it is. Honesty and Genuineness go a long way and are rare to find. 2. Another thing I like about you is that you don't have a herd mentality and read and introduce your viewers to books that are unheard of or rarely ever spoken about on RU-vid. 3. I love how creative you are with your videos and come up with interesting challenges for yourself. 4. You use the library! Yes, please. I hardly ever see a booktuber borrow a book from the library as if they don't exist. Keeping it real is great. 5. You are really witty! Have to give it to you. Take care and thank you for always speaking your mind in a world where many people refuse to do that in search for validation. ❤

Similar tastes is useful, cuz then I get recommendations for sci-fi and fantasy instead of Romance books :p But what I like is when I feel the person in front of me is real, and I grow to trust them. I only watch yours and Merphy Napier's videos regularly (basically every single video except hauls). But yeah, I just want real people who don't seem to be playing a role or trying too hard. I'm here for book rec more than entertainment^^

I appreciate that you read not only "good books" ("good books" being those that win medals/prizes/Goodreads awards and/or have lots of money behind them so they are advertised everywhere and featured on sponsored booktubers' videos). More often than not, I only find those books to be fine. Sometimes I even hate them. Just because they are in the limelight does not mean that they are good to ME or anybody. 5 stars to me can be any number of stars for someone else. I agree on your perspective that the ranking system should stem solely from the reader and their enjoyment of the book. I never feel any pressure to rate a book highly because everyone else does.
4 года назад
I relate to this so much! People don't talk about all the pressure that comes with posting videos on RU-vid. Pressure to read the popular/hyped books, pressure to look good in your videos, pressure to be entertaining, etc. That discussion was really insightful and I'm so glad I'm not the only one feeling that way.

My favourite booktubers are people who are honest about their opinions of books but are always very clear that it's their opinion - ours as different readers may be different. It's nice to hear straightforward responses to a reading, especially things like trigger warnings and issues as well as things that are done really well (especially own voices). I also like booktubers who are generally positive in their energy. I don't like watching people who just trash authors, books, or people's opinions. I also like those who read more diversely (i.e. not just one genre or almost entirely one genre) as I like a variety of different books and like to hear about new books I might like. These are some of the reasons I like watching your videos.

I like to watch people who are real. Who don’t put on really loud voices with big expressions and it just seems so over the top and you just know that once the camera is gone they won’t talk like that. I’m also not a fan of the super decoration bookshelves with all the fairy lights, little anime characters and all perfect hardcovers. When I watched those people I felt the need to buy nice hardcovers only and have everything perfect. I love how you have a realistic bookshelf with heaps of secondhand books. I also love how you sometimes come on with no makeup and just hang out with us. You’re the only booktuber I watch now because everyone else gave me a headache haha.

As a new booktuber I felt this so much... These past two weeks I had begun putting SO MUCH pressure on myself that I just said 'nope, this is a hobby, this is for fun and if no one even watches, that's freaking fine' or else I was going to dive the joy of reading away AGAIN.

I think the primary factor in me subscribing to a RU-vidr is if they have an entertaining personality. I can watch anyone talk about any book if they're charming, funny or really personable. There are so many booktubers I love who I would never read any of the kinds of books that they read but they're just so good at making fun videos that I watch them all the time. Another thing that really draws me into a channel is people who are really good at reviewing. The channel doesn't have to do a lot of standalone reviews, but I like coming out of wrap-ups with a good and detailed understanding of why someone liked or disliked a certain book and their general thoughts about it. I really love channels who can break down a book eloquently and who can convey their love or hatred of books in a clear and concise way. Lastly, and I hate to say it, but audio and visual quality play a part in me watching a channel. I would never write off anyone who is intelligent and funny because they don't have a $1,000 camera and lighting set up, but I'm much less likely to click on a video if the thumbnail looks like it was filmed on a webcam and if I can't hear what someone's saying I won't stick around very long to find out if it's interesting. The reality is I'd rather watch a mediocre video with good sound and lighting than a good video I can barely hear with low-quality visuals.

I like to watch people who make videos because they have a real genuine interest, enjoyment, passion or what have you for the topic: books, plants, makeup, science, food, decorating, clothes, etc. even when the topic is not a particular interest of mine, I will keep returning to their channel because they are genuine and I find that enjoyable to watch and I may learn something new.

The thing that is most important to me while choosing what/who to watch on booktube is how the person expresses herself/himself. I like it when I know whether I'll like a book or not and the best thing is when a person can express her/his reading experience clearly and in a manner that will make me see how it will be for me. The main reason I love your channel is how you make it clear to me whether the novel is for me or not regardless of your preference. I have read books that I liked and otherwise would not have read because I see from your views whether I'll like it or not (a most recent example is The Sparrow, a novel I LOVED and would not have known existed since sci fi is not my genre). With you I very rarely go wrong, so thank you very much. For instance there is a booktuber whose taste in books very rarely matches with mine but I like watching her because she expressed why a book appealed to her and why another one didn't. I usually go the opposite way and it works. I also like your sense of humour which is something important to me. And this may sound shallow but the way a person sounds is important. I don't have a particular criteria for it but if I don't like the person's voice then I simply can't watch even though she/he may be otherwise an excellent fit for what I'm looking for. As for the appearance of the person, it is not a deciding factor for me but it is nicer when the person makes a bit of an effort. And lastly if the person do not support some of the values that are important to me, then it is a no go. For instance if a person is racist, anti feminist then she/he maybe golden but I'll not watch. but this doesn't mean everything should fit, for instance I'm religious but have no problem watching and appreciating a person who doesn't like religion. Again thank you, I really like your channel and think it among the best.

I really hope you don't feel the need to continue to defend yourself. One of the things i like the most about you... why you are my ideal Booktuber...I feel you give honest opinions about books and not overly critical or complimentary to books. I was so happy to hear you say that books less than five star books are still worth reading. I'm really annoyed at how 5 stars seems to be 'the norm' or what everyone is looking for. In my estimation 5 stars should be amazing...and not every book can be amazing. Sometimes I just like an escape, or a laugh or a cry and it doesn't have to be a five star read. I do sometimes feel like you are spreading yourself too thin with so many challenges. But it's more a worry that you will burn out, because I am selfish and want you to keep reading. :)

I watch several booktubers on a regular basis - some for their personality and some because of similar reading tastes to my own. I'm not a huge sci-fi reader but I really enjoy your sense of humour and your honesty. Also, you make me laugh at some of your comments, they're priceless. I could care less about the number of books you read in a week/month/year...if you're being honest and upfront about a book you've read that's all that really matters. You're definitely one of my favourite booktubers! Just keep on keeping it real!

Hahaha I like channels that give detailed (but non spoiler) thoughts on what they're reading in a candid way so it's like someone calmly having a conversation with you as the viewer. It's just relaxing, engaging and informative. It's what I'm trying to model my channel on in all honesty! Hi Emily! I think you brought up some really great points! I think there's not a true ideal BookTuber. I was invested in the community around 3-5 years ago and went away until recently. When I came back I noticed so much more diversity in the people and content involved in the community. It's been really cool to come back and see how the community has grown and shaped to fit each individual. That was not something I always saw before!

I feel like watching booktube I put a lot of pressure on myself to read a lot of books. I generally read 100 or more books per year but when watching booktube made it feel like a chore (plus life got in the way) so I took a break from reading and booktube. This year I decided to rekindle my love with books and since it’s been going well I decided to venture back into booktube and only watch the book tubers whose content I really enjoy and who make me want to have conversations with them about books.

I go to booktube for recs, but stay for personality. I don't care about new releases, if it's something highly anticipate, especially from an author you've been raving about then sure, but there are SO MANY books out there and I love learning about older books. Overall, I think the mix of new/old and genres you read are great. And while I don't think booktubers should be pressured to read X amount of books, I will admit I get bored when some books are mentioned over and over and over, especially when the plot is explained each time (I tend to fast forward...) and it's a popular booktube book. But don't feel pressured to read tons of books, especially if you're not enjoying it! You can always talk about older books you read during months you don't read a lot and/or do discussion vids, etc. (I don't know lol). Lastly, the world sucks and you're going to have people comment on your looks. I don't have any recs on how to stop that (other than blocking people). It doesn't/shouldn't matter, but as I said, people suck.

I've been watching booktube for years but I found your beauty channel only recently then stumbled across this channel. I was absolutely kicking myself I'd never found your channel earlier. What makes me stay for your videos is that you always give an honest opinion. If you don't like something about the book you don't fake a good review and then mention 1 sentence on the bad, you say it as it is. But this works the other way too, when you like a book and gush over it we know you genuinely love that book. I also like that you have quite a different reading taste to many "popular" booktubers. You don't fawn all over the brand new shiny hyped books, you'll get to them in time and your opinion isn't influenced by the excitement and buzz of the new release. I also stay for your personality, you aren't afraid to have a laugh at yourself and I love that

The Booktubers I am finding on RU-vid are all young which is wonderful to see such enthusiasm among the young for reading. I would love to see some baby boomers or senior Booktubers doing reviews of books they enjoy reading. I find most of Booktubers I’m finding are very much into fantasy books of some type. Not my thing for now but will give it a try. I do love watching and hearing your reviews and the other Booktubers I’m finding. Thank you and keep reading!,,

Longtime lurker, but I just have to say that your lack of publisher sponsored videos is one of the reasons why you are currently my favorite booktuber. Sadly, I feel like it's made booktube this obnoxious echo chamber where every booktuber posts a sponsored "haul" and talks about the same six or seven books at the same time. Then they only read those sponsored books and you start to wonder if you can really trust their reviews. The next thing you know their challenge videos and tag videos are also sponsored and that booktuber feels like a cheap salesperson. I watch booktubers to get a diverse set of book recommendations from a fellow book lover. Plus I like that you are candid about how new books are expensive and promote using your local library and buying from library book sales. It doesn't matter if people think your reviews are "always negative" because at least you're honest. Same reason why I've always liked your beauty channel.

I’m not a booktuber by any means but this year I decided to take a picture of every book I read this year on my Instagram stories. It was fun to start with but now I feel immense pressure to keep up. If I take a week to read a 600 page book, I feel like I’m not reading fast enough.

I watch people for their vibe mainly and I can figure out within one video usually if I am going to like them and follow their channel. For me its nice to find people who have my same taste but I also like people who introduce me to new books and aren't reading only the popular books. I also like intelligence so if the person is too uninformed about things shall I say I tend to steer clear. So its a balance. I came from your beauty channel so I already knew I liked you and then you introduced me to all kinds of books so I am not going anywhere!

I never thought that these were some things you struggled with on booktube. I only run a bookstagram account which is relatively easier than booktube it seems like but I definitely understand the struggle of feeling compelled to read only the new popular books rather than the unknown backlisted ones.

Thanks for this very interesting video. I follow a handful of booktubers and a few authortubers, and have been thinking recently about what the successful ones have in common. One thing that most seem to have is a voice that's pleasing and distinctive. You certainly do!

This is so hard to define (unique videos are great but I also love a classic haul or wrap up). I think people enjoy videos like this so maybe you could run a "new to booktube" series? That would be interesting and helpful. Also, your challenge vids are always funny to watch 🙂

I love this video ! To me it's first and foremost a question of personality. I usually watch people who I feel I could get along with in real life. I love watching booktubers who have their own taste in books, and who are willing to read lesser known books. I really do not want to watch ten videos from ten different people about the same books and with the same opinions. But I love watching booktubers who have different tastes than I do, it's really helpful when I want to get out of my comfort zone. And I also value the quality of reviews : I really like when booktubers take the time to reflect on the book, and try to go in depth about what they thought. Quality reviews about a wide variety of books, that's what I'm looking for on Booktube :)

I honestly like you and you're probably one of the best booktubers i'm watching atm and it's because of your personality and how chill your videos are. I can't stand people who are constantly shouting, moving around or putting meme videos in between what they're saying, etc. And I totally agree with the make up thing. People do actually treat me differently if i'm wearing makeup. No doubt about that. Which it's ridiculous 'cos i'm the SAME PERSON but it happens

I liked how you talked about ratings. I tend to rate a little on the higher side, mostly 4 star books with a moderate number of 5 and 3 star books. But I rarely rate books 1-2 stars. But I think that is because I either just don't pick up or dnf books that I would rate lower.

My favorite book tubers are the ones that reads what they like, reads some back list novels, and reminds me why reading is so fun. I'm looking forward to wrap-ups the most as to help me to know which book is worth my time and money but to be honest I tend to be disappointed with those. Booktubers read them either too fast to forge an opinion or say things like "I don't think it was for me 3 STARS" but fail to tell us why though... Also, I love makeup and fashion so I see no issue with anyone making an effort for their videos but on the other hand, I couldn't care less if everyone was bare faced lol

I like what you seem to be (i don't know you personally, so i really don't know) and how your channel is. No complaints. I've notice that me personally only watch female booktubers (don't know why). And has i like different generas i gather something different from which one of you. Oh i notice most booktubers i watch are kind of sarcastic, so i guess i like that (i consider myself as one, so maybe i like people alike). Anyway, keep being you and take it easy with the pressure. Most of us is content if you simply upload.
@bookshade954

I agree with you with a lot of the pressures that you have mentioned. I do notice that appearance does matter. The better looking you are as an adult the more people like you and pay attention to you. If you are plus-sized I noticed that people tend to be more rude and say things that are very hurtful which is sad. I also feel that if you are an older adult I feel that you are not taken as seriously or if you are a adult has a unique look you are more likely to be overlooked. On top of that, if you have a difference of opinion and give constructive criticism it looked as being something that is negative and to me that is really sad. If this type of behavior continues book critics may disappear over time on BookTube or people will stop giving a difference of opinion because they don't want to deal with the drama that comes with giving a opinion on books. If a book is not good according to that person's viewpoint then it is not good and it is oh ok to have these feelings. If you like a certain book that is fine too and there is nothing wrong with that either. To me book critiques are good on Booktube because it helps to diversify perspective and its sad that you really can't do that and I am seeing fewer and fewer adults doing that unfortunately. But also think it depends on what genres you are interested in some are more popular than others. For example, if you like romance books it is a challenging genre to be interested in because of the stigma that romance genre to some people can not be seen as constructive like other genres that are popular as well. But that is my opinion on it. I have to be honest I wish I had your beauty. I love your show! And I would love to see more episodes like this in the future!

I think my ideal booktuber is someone who can clearly dictate what they like, dislike, or found interesting about a book. I'm not a big fan of the channels where they list off the 18 books they read that month and a 2 sentence synopsis of each one. Im never going to read most of those books and your short lite synopsis isnt selling me on it. I'd much rather watch someone who reads 3 books and can tell me a bigger synopsis, what they like, dislike, and found interesting/learned from a book than someone with a huge stack why seems like they didnt retain anything from the book. I look to booktube to hear about what others are reading and find recommendations for myself in the future, and I like that you and I have slightly different taste in books because I also like to venture outside my comfort zone. I started watching you on your beauty channel years ago and have been hooked on your book channel for the same reasons. I like your thoughtful, through reviews that done seem like a sales pitch, and that you're not afraid to express when you genuinely didnt like something. If you're looking for adding new content I'd like more tags, collabs with other booktubers, other content reviews (movies, tv, youtube videos), or daily life stuff (cooking, fashion, household stuff) peppered in occasionally.

For me, it's always going to be about intriguing book recommendations first and foremost. Once I find that the person interests me in terms of their recommendations, I then want to know more about them as a person. I have had a few people who I start watching, but I can tell halfway through that our tastes just don't line up. I really like how much your videos are like talking with a friend. The style is engaging, and you can see that you know what you're talking about and that you enjoy it. That is what makes me want to come back to see what suggestions you'll have next. In any case, thank you for the recommendations and all your hard work. À bientôt!

I don't watch a lot of booktubers, I only watch you & Merphy Napier. I look for someone who has a similar taste to mine but not too similar, so I know I get a lot recommendations that are intriguing to me & but also get some recommendations of books I would never pick up on my own. I also like opinionated reviews, if someone just tells me a book is good or bad without any reasoning, that review is pointless to me. I don't really care about the amount of books someone reads. Of course personality is also really important and I love your personality!

I love your personality, watched every single one of your videos, it's really obvious that you're honest and that's why we love you. Thing that makes me unsubscribe from some channel is when I get an impression that only important thing is how many book they finished so all they do is listen to audio books on 2x speed. I listen to audio books on my way to work, just don't see why everything should be about numbers.

Pff... I think that the concept of ideal booktube is veeeeery vage and different, it depends on every viewer, but speaking of my personal point of view it depends on my mood and many factors that most of the time are even out of my control so I can say this: 1. It has to be an honest channel (I know it's vage but we know when someone is giving an honest opinion) 2. To have at least content according to my tastes (Let's be honest here and say that also we have to have an open mind as viewers, because at least in my case I started to read SCI-FI thaks to you and I found that I love it!) 3. Dynamic and funny (Once again it depends on the tastes of everyone and but I think that this is where the honesty takes a vital role, so you are fine!) Summary: I love your channel!!!!

It is easier to become more critical after you have read hundreds of books. Most authors do not generate a lot of new and innovative ideas in their work. So more experienced readers will have already encountered similar plots|characters|themes many many times before. This isn't an attack on new writers, I think it has more to do with the progression of the individual reader.

I like to watch for recommendations and similar taste but sometimes stick around for vibes and personality. I sometimes have a hard time with that because I am currently not super into fantasy or contemporary and I don't like horror, so that limits the scope drastically. It's why I enjoy your videos so much, because you also read sci-fi a lot and I rarely find people that do, for some reason
