DISHWASHER EXHAUST NOT WORKING

This was a service call on a dishwasher exhaust fan that was not working, I found that the fan was running when I arrived but I also found that the exhaust motor was going bad and the dishwasher was missing some curtains. I got the motor replaced and the fan back up and running as best as it could.

Ha ha, my electrician Father used to do service work for a smallgoods factory ~50+ years ago and as a kid, I sometimes used to tag along. Everything in that place was dripping in grease, caked on all the motors, dripping off all the conduit and switches. If covers were removed, cockroaches would run out. Whenever my dad came back from that place, his overalls were disgusting and he smelt like salami - but, he would bring back all sorts of nice smallgoods - they made really nice sausages :-)

I’ve never seen adjustable pulleys before. What a great idea. I spent the last 15 years as a commercial catering engineer and that dishwasher looked as though it was ready for a serious service. I used to replace bearings in motors if they were in good condition. I had an urgent call to a large school where the 3ph (415 volt between phases in the uk) dishwasher wash pump tripped. The main wash pump had seized solid. The head teacher threatened to shut the school if the DW wasn’t fixed due to cross infection risk until I pointed out that they could use paper plates! I got the pump out and back to the workshop and had to split the bearing with a grinder because it had welded itself onto the motor shaft. Fitted a new bearing and took it back to site and refitted the pump. I loved being able to provide that sort of service. I’m retired now but have lots of stories, like the restaurant that complained that their D/washer wasn’t taking the liquid detergent only the find the tube in a box of detergent powder!

I didn't see it listed on the nameplate, but if the motor is thermally protected (internally) it could be going on and off if it was running hot or if the thermal switch was bad.

I’d like to know who did the initial inspection? That’s the wrong Fan for a Dishwasher. Has to be an Updraft discharge, also has to have an external disconnect on the roof, so you don’t have to touch the fan to shut it off. Also Aluminum or Stainless Steel ductwork. Exhaust must be tapped into the entrance and exit of the dishwasher. A Dishwasher that size would have to have the controls to turn the fan on and off with a short time delay on the off cycle. Have you tried the Optibelt Brand of Belts. I wouldn’t use anything but their belts on exhaust fans. Six to twelve times the life out of the belt and easier on the motor amp. wise.

Exhaust manufacturer told me a motor that is 1 hp or smaller, does not need motor starter protection, has internal protection. What's wierd like you said 3 phase for a dish exhaust? They should have used aluminum duct, crazy corrosion. Also the bottom of the hood should be no higher than 80 inches, maybe poor draw because too high?

I can't say for certain without having the specifications for the dishwasher and the fan, but they don't appear to be matched up right... The fan static pressure is at *best* about 0.4 "wg, with a velocity pressure of ~1/2"wg I started running some pressure drop calculations, and they aren't adding up... nobody's paying me for the analysis, so I give up... it just doesn't look right...

Welp since im a avid dishwasher. Also btw thats a Ecolab EC-44(HH) Beast machine they do last long if treated right. But if the machine doesn't have pant leg duct work. As long as the canopy can capture all the exhaust heat/vapor its good. Not sure why they have the opening for the vent like that with solid blockers. I've seen one machine with a setup like that. I hadn't gotten up and close to it so cant say that's typical, although the duct configuration I'm pretty sure inst.

Good video. Talking my language. A Hobart made unit for ECOLab. The dish machine should have had pants legs and that would have prevented all that rust in the dish area. The customer didn’t want to pay for the extra cost to have it done. Surprised ECOLAB let that thing work in that way. The motor replacement info was good to know. Lots of clients expect me to work on their exhaust fans for their dish machines. I usually say no but now I might consider taking them on. A really good video.

Don Westphal Hobart doesn’t own ECOlab. ECOlab buys machines from mfgs and they emboss the units with the Ecolab name. Buy enough from Hobart and they will stamp your name on the machines you buy too. ECOlab is a big customer of Hobart. I guess you were on the meat slicer side of things.

That's a driven pulley. The motor drives the other shaft as it's the source of power. :) It isn't thermal protection built in to the 3 phase motor but it does make you wonder if something was causing a spike in amps and the breaker protected the motor (as well as the line) from overheating to catastrophic failure. Bad bearings, which that obviously had, would cause a higher current draw but it'd be most noticeable on startup and most likely to open the circuit then. I'd be curious if the driven shaft bearings are going out as well, causing more drag or perhaps the fan blades are messed up somehow (rust? chipping?)

Thanks for posting, interesting video to watch and you do a great job of explaining everything. I do want to point out a couple things though. EVERY motor has to have overload protection(not just three phase motors as you stated, sorry to nit-pick.) Its just a matter of if its thermally protected internally or utilizing external protection(overload relay). Now most motors if protected internally will have it printed on the nameplate. That is not an absolute rule, but generally holds true. If it does not explicitly state that it is protected internally then you have to assume it is not, unless you want to contact the OEM for clarification.

When you "opened up" the motor pulley and adjusted the pulley by turning it in a ccw direction, I was wondering if your adjustment had to go to the next 'Flat' on the motor stem? It seems logical that the next flat would be the only place you could retighten, so in doing so the distance has to be a predetermined speed thus amp draw or am I way off? And were you being careful not to change the up/down position of the pulley on the motor shaft? Be brief I'll pick up on your answer. Thank you
@HVACRVIDEOS
@HVACRVIDEOS 4 года назад
Yeah you got the right idea you have to tighten on the flat spots and yes you have to watch the pulley alignment while adjusting so you dont create another issue by running them un aligned

Just a thought. To speed up the fan couldn’t you swap the pulley sizes

You should see the grease trap of our local china snack bar. It is a steal pan on the floor under the fan. Pretty smelly and quiet dangerous.

How does moving the pulley slow down the motor?

did you grease the pillow block bearings? (if not sealed) and that is a friction belt ( verses an auto style belt) it does not get tightened super tight as it will pull the bearings out of the new motor. did you never seize the shaft and the threads on the adjustable pulley so that you can get it apart in 6 months?

Looks like the junkyard for parts for exhaust fans. 😂 If you can even find a decent part of those units. 😂 Was this a condemned 🏫?😂

Did you go to college? If so for how long? I am starting out as a helper but I know literally nothing about electrical and VERY little about hvac, I’m trying to find ways other people learned the trade

You commented about the rust build up and presumed it had been happening for some time. Do you have any opinions on that now that you know there is more air moving? Was it always running too slow? Is it incorrectly sized? Just curious you thought on the rust you saw before and after repair.

Most dishwasher exhaust systems have stainless steel ducts coming down to the dish machine ( we call the pants) and that makes sure the steam goes right up the hood. In this situation they were using a hood 4-5 feet above the dish machine, if they had the stainless pants than they would not have the rust issues

time to call the city and have them do an inspection. you really shouldn't have any contactors inside breaker panels, water on the floor near panels is a major red flag, panels MUST have a 3 foot clearance in front of them (per fire and electrical code).

Chris what exactly is makeup air? I know it has something to do with + - air pressure.
@FrozenHaxor
@FrozenHaxor 4 года назад
It's air that is pulled from outside and forced inside by either a dedicated unit or by AC unit dampers, to "make up" for exhaust fans pulling the air out of the building etc. so that there is not a lower pressure on the inside of the building than outside which can lead to certain problems.
@jasonmurawski5877
@jasonmurawski5877 4 года назад
When the exhaust fans pull air out of the building it reduces the pressure inside the building, so makeup air can be provided by a dedicated unit or the Minimum -outside air dampers on the AC units
