I think the acquisitions of 20th century fox was huge gamble. They spend over 70 billion just to buy the brand meaning they need fill in that amount. Probably feeling the effects now

Maybe but the entire company's success has always been based on its ownership of IP. The reason they bought Marvel or star wars was to to be able to use the characters in their theme parks, any money they bring in on top of that is just a bonus. As for their streaming service I would be a little sceptical about the loss figures since it is set up as a separate subsidiary and the majority of it's expenses is owed to other parts of Disney. Honestly the only purchase that is really questionable is ESPN it just doesn't fit.

Yes, he doesn't seem to understand that "market share' in this business means nothing. Literally nothing. Each movie is an individual project with an independent P&L. They picked that lock to a certain extent with the MCU - they learned they could drop the quality of individual releases and still get billion dollar hits because of an overarching story - but Endgame came and went. That isn't working now. The fact that Disney has more "market share" is simply because they are putting out more movies... each of which is losing money and hurting the shareholders. But Disney management and the board don't care much about that anymore.

Its more a postive that they can take within a not good larger picture which is what hes saying, and I agree. It might not be going well but things could be a lot worse. The movies underpreformed but they didnt collapse (maybe the pixar and haunted mansion but i think disney knew the haunted mansion one would as they sacfriced it by moving it up)

Well they need to go bankrupt to be taught a lesson. They are major anti customer as you're not allowed to even bring your own bottle of water. You have to buy their overpriced water and lunch and snacks at their parks. No outside food. Rip-off comes to mind. They keep selling refried beans like fans won't know the movies are all rehashed trash.

EXACTLY! Thats all Disney have to do with ALL these huge, beloved IPs they own now; just don't frickin interfere with them! They really need to just leave the Creatives to simply do their thing and Disney would make huge money. Avatar although while I'm not the biggest fan, it's clear that movie did so well because its just a visual spectacle, with simply no woke, identity, socio politics whatsoever. This is what Families and Audiences want, just good, wholesome entertainment. Also I think the whole theme of Jake Sully and the "Family Unit" was nice and refreshing for audiences and families with that movie. But yeh, Disney just really need to drop the ideology bs, people don't want lectering and told what they should be a "ally" for. Disney need to focus on getting back to what they always were in the past, simply a "Family Entertainment" Company.

I have no idea why they thought any normal person would ever want these live action re releases. They are so bad and boring for any average cinema goer.

While I personally doubt it’ll happen, Apple has always been the popular pick to buy up Disney, so maybe history will repeat itself. The Disney brand isn’t quite so damaged that it would be impossible to rehabilitate its public image, and if Tim Apple believes he can turn things around, then it’s literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pick up a company like Disney on the cheap.

Michael Eisner had some great ideas like releasing their library of movies and cartoons on VHS 📼. Back in those days they would rerelease the same movies again every few years for next generation of kids and his thesis was it's better to sell it on home video when VHS was new. Milk the back catalogue of movies to bring in cash to make better newer movies and he's right. The old movies wouldn't sell today as movie tech advanced more and more. The second thing he did was get into TV sports entertainment and boy was that a cash cow. The third thing to a lesser extent was he expanded the theme parks. But that's where his genius stops as computer animation was coming he got into a dispute with Steve Jobs over distribution. That's where the board weren't happy with the direction and Bob Iger stepped in to and started an acquisition spree. That's Bob Iger genius he bought Pixar, paid a high price back then $7B, bought Marvel and Star Wars cheap then bought Fox, too early to tell still. But this acquisitions paid off big time. Marvel and Star Wars already paid for itself many times over. Pixar has been lackluster ever since they kicked John Lasseter out as he was the creative genius behind toy story. Now it's time for the next phase of Disney. But give credit to Eisner and Iger as they both carried the torch for a long time and did well. Now it's time for another reinvention.

Worked for Eisner in the 90-2000 and enjoyed my time there. I did college program 97 and advanced internship in 2000. At the time I left the Disney Institute was starting the process of restructuring the Disney Institute. I enjoyed the focus on education in the parks and all the classes the Institute offered. Many of those classes and camp programs were cut once I left.

If that’s the case they should back out of the deal and keep Hulu a WB property for now cuz 30 billion dollars spent could cripple the company, maybe even force it into bankruptcy.

exactly, disney want want every movie to be a billion dollar success. im baffled that disney even though indiana jones had a chance to make good money. the last movie was released in 2008. the franchise have very little relevance now. dial of destiny earned 40% less than crystal skull in its opening weekend and dial of destiny wasnt even on any streaming services. disney should really consider spending 10 million+ on hireing good writers, treat them well and make them involved in the projects (not some gig work shit) and more likely earn back those 10 mill and much more. its kind of funny seeing these big companies do everything they can to save a few millions, while their movies make them lose 100s of millions at the same time. they could even just choose to animate those old movies instead, would likely cost a lot less.

Budget does make a difference in movies but is not the dominant variable to the equation... Disney's problem is that they alienated 50% of their customers while spending more! When a company focuses more on hot topic issues instead of focusing on products, this is always going to be a problem, and the United States has plenty of examples.

Precisely. What’s really troubling is we are seeing a real lack of mid range budgeted films. All the focus seems to be on giant “blockbusters” with ridiculously inflated budgets which as you say hugely affects margins- ie. more money to film, more money it needs to earn. Just look back at the nineties and the number of modestly budget films that still made a decent amount of profit. Things like “The Fugitive”, a budget of 44 million yet it brought in 270 million. Even taking inflation into account, if they made The Fugitive today that 44 million would be a 90 million budget, still very reasonable by today’s standards. Disney and the other big film companies seem to think just throwing money at something is gonna make it better. CGI is costly, and whilst it can solve a lot of problems the cost is it’s own. Sometimes it cheaper and easier to things in camera with practical stuff. But Disney doesn’t seem to think so.

@@yvindvego9404 a good indiana jones movie would have been the biggest movie of the year. the IP is maybe not as relavant as in the past but its good enough to turn a well selling good movie into a giant hit. The Issue was that they turned a heroic 90 minute action movie into a total mess.

They did well because they used up all their best Marvel stories. Their grade A stuff culminating in the Avengers. Now after such a high it's tough to sustain that but they're preparing for the next phase leading up to the Avengers secret wars.

This is basically the problem for modern business, Most have forgotten that profits come when you produce goods and services people actually want to buy, If you focus on making great products and services, the Profits look after there selves. (though having a good marketing team helps).

I would argue that their problems started when they insisted that lecturing and preaching to people is more important than good storytelling.

My main problem is that all this new baggage is added with the cinema style that FORBIDS movie magic. Nothing is allowed to be unrealistic, which means we belabor every plot point, explain anything left to the imagination in the original, Etc. Makes for a boring AF pitch "Hey, remember that fairy tale wonderfully drawn as animated storybook? We took out all that, the aged like milk bits and put in a bunch of snarky asides to camera in every scene with the pallet of ivory painted wall through out the year. Just ignore all the H8ters they are all just Big-Os!" Um... No, because its lazy storytelling, a crappy recasting of the original that makes me wanna shout " Why so SERIOUS?!" Make a movie were I'm allowed to get lost in the story for +90 minutes. Make it like Shrek if you have to, a dumb rump through the story books of the past can be pretty fun with the right approach! Make it silly, or take the old story but put it somewhere new! Just make something that DOESNT feel like Sunday school skit for Left wingers but with a bottomless budget.

​@@aishaalamoudi599Disney+ didn't have a meteoric rise. They just counted all the Disney Hotstar subscribers in India paying 14 cents a month as part of the Disney+ total. And a lot of those projects were greenlit by Iger originally.

I've noticed they have also put out a lot more content in the past year than usual. I think the strategy here is that they have run out of ideas, so they are gonna pump out a bunch of films in quick succession to keep money constantly flowing in steadily (even if its at a loss). For now its a numbers game where they are choosing quantity over quality.

I am unlimited amounts of frustrated with how they formulized Avatar 2. The freaking suits need to understand that they DONT understand creativity and they cant standardize it. Avatar one was an excellent expression of individuals struggling against pressures, and how they personally decided to deal with them. There was no true "evil" people, because of the way that the movie played with perspective. Even the CEO wasnt an inherently horrible person, he was just a puppet who would have been replaced the instant he didnt dance. The movie was beautiful both in mind and in vision. Avatar 2 was a reskinned marvel movie.

Sequels wouldn't have been much of a problem if they've used the established audience to try novel and creative ideas while keeping a veneer of familiarity. Instead they make everything reliant on the same formula, no matter if the movies are related to one another or even if they're a different franchise/brand :/

They hire writers based on their politics rather than on merit.

Writers are paid to write what they're told, according to very specific plans that go way beyond "what's an interesting and creative plot." Writers may write but studio execs decide if they pay for it or not, what stays and what gets cut. You wanna have a fundamental say in Hollywood's IP decisions? Forget writing and become a studio exec (not that you'll get there of course, it's just an expression.) The one Star Wars show that bucked the trend (excellent production, well written, spectacular acting) was Andor, and one of the reasons was a big Writer's Room, with deep and prolonged involvement of many of the other areas in the writing such as set, costume, makeup and prop designers. It's a show about a side character in an auxiliary movie to the main saga, not even a part of it, and it made the other shows look embarrassing, even outside the universe like the Marvel ones. This, plus the big Writer's Room which is the very opposite of what Hollywood wants probably means they'll kill it with fire in the second season and any other production that thinks it can do the same. Is the answer to the current crisis to have less writers? Perhaps AI cookie-cutter trash barfed by deepfake drones? Because you seem to imply the problem is an excess of writers and not the incompetence of the people who lead them and decide what is spent on and what gets thrown into the garbage bin. What kind of a "Karen" attitude is that? It's basically the same as yelling at employees for things they have no control over, and then advocating in favor of the people who actually shafted you, to reward them for shafting you. What kind of madness is this? Just like in politics: "Hands off my Medicare! Which is why I'll vote for the people who have very explicitly announced they plan on cutting Social Security if they win." They need more shows for teens, so far I have no intrest in any of the marvel or star wars content I used to love, they need to put effort and passion into their shows, plus give creators the time to make shows good. I also liked the look, idea and feel of elemental, I think it mainly flopped because everything else disney is doing has left a sour taste in peoples mouths.

Its wild to me how suits always flock to creativity, monetize it, then take control of it despite their skill being monetization not creativity. Then when the "art" is nice and standardized, like their balance sheets, they are confused when its not art and no one cares about it. The ability to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses and not just think they know it all because they are good at money would do them some good.

@@tdwinnerfordinner Just compare Marvel phase 3 against phase 4. The quality in storytelling, special/visual effects, character development, enjoyability, .. is just huge. Phase 4 just plain sucked. It took a while until most people realized the trend, but even the most die hard fans have now stopped going to these crappy movies. Add to that that the showrunners and directors have started to actively and publicly attack their fanbase and calling them racist and bigoted just becasue they didn't like their crappy movies. Instead of accepting the justified criticism of the fans and to question their current way of making movies, they went on the offensive and started a war with the fanbase, which is just not a smart thing to do if you want to make money.

Well Hulu is a separate service. You are billed for Disney and if you want Hulu they'll give you a bundled deal. Hulu is like the competitor to HBO and AMC.

With the benefit of hindsight, it seems Iger's main 'talent' was not to nurture creativity and new ideas from within, but to hoover up IP from outside the company, then squeeze as much value out of it as possible, sometimes devaluing it in the process (e.g. Star Wars). His acquisition of Fox just before the pandemic put Disney deep in the red at the worst possible moment (yes, he couldn't have predicted the pandemic, but he massively overpaid and it was a bad deal with or without the pandemic). As for Chapek, he barely had enough time to clear up this mess and didn't have a clear vision of his own for the company, so he floundered and was eventually given the role of fall guy, once Iger's mistakes really started to hurt. Iger can't repeat his old trick of just buying new IP because now credit is a lot more expensive - interest rates aare shooting up, making borrowing a lot more expensive and there's not much more IP that Disney can actually buy, even if they could afford it.

I thought everyone knew that Chapek was a scapegoat lol Iger was still on the board when Chapek became CEO. Chapek was free from Iger's influence for roughly a few months, and even then nobody wanted to listen to him. Chapek ordered to halt some of the Marvel shows/productions to cut costs, but executives declined stating that Marvel signed the deals and nothing could be done about it. That really did upset him, because the moment that happened, Christine McCarthy started to openly undermine him with the goal of succeeding him. That idea completely bombed the moment she realized Iger wasn't planning on stepping down at all. He flunked his way into politics and then with fake confidence came back to lead Disney. There was no way it could have ended well. Also, Iger is a very egoistic person. Bob believes that he is the only one capable of running Disney, and also some other bs propaganda that he himself made up. Therefore, I and many others (JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and BoA bankers included) believe Disney will keep on declining until it resolves the issue with management.

Iger is just an acquisition guy who buys out the competition. That's all he does. He did Bob Chapek dirty set him up to take the fall for Iger's mess. Iger is not a creative.

Now that the age of cheap streaming is over, physical media will make a comeback (is making a comeback). This decision to ditch physical media will hurt Disney in the long run.

Hey genius, all of the MCU was C tier and lower characters. Iron Man was garbage until the IP was brought to the big screen. Fox owned the rights to all the A list Marvel heroes. That is why Marvel Studios went with iron man, hulk, and the avengers.

Guardians 3 was actually phenomenal though It was emotional, intense, but still full of heart and humor and a fantastic end to the series

@@RB01.10 Haven't seen it. It may have been all off those things, but it was really the last of phase 3, just delayed until way after the fact. It still had the old cast and crew, the old director and writer from the previous phases.

Let’s see…the Disney annual pass is. $1400. That’s a lot. Compare that to Universal’s $700. That’s a lot less, and you can choose whether you want to do 3 parks or 2 parks. 2 parks are a lot cheaper than 3 parks. By a couple hundred more. So I would say it’s considerably cheaper, by like…a lot.

Like honestly, I don’t care much about what you do with fictional characters & even race swapping historical ones for good social commentary can have a (small) place. The missing piece is the having something to say with it or just writing a good story which just happens to have diverse characters. But they’re just doing it in a blatant attempt to pander to a demographic that doesn’t respond to pandering in the same way, and won’t reward crap content.

The audience is inconsistent. The only reason they kept going with those dumb remakes is because of the success they had in the beginning especially with Beauty and the Beast and Lion King

Not growing as much as before. It's all tied to their movies and theme parks. When they have hit movies theme parks ticket sales go up and more sales of merchandising and licensing. When movies tank it goes down with less people interested.

Yeah, when every body wants my last $20 a month I start getting picky. In the end, I don't think there's a enough *good* attractive content to support more than a few streaming platforms in the long run, especially without a prop up from other businesess like Amazon+. Relying on everyone to forget a bill and use it only sporadically is almost as dumb as trying make a monoploy on Free for everyone and THEN figure out how to turn a profit.
