The Marvels used our complaints about Captain Marvel's character as a driving factor for her development, allowing us to see how her arrogance & stubbornness due to her being all-powerful affected everyone around her, especially her relationship with Monica, Kamala, Nick Fury, the Skrulls etc. What she did gave them nothing but more trouble & misery, effectively making things worse than it already was. Heck, her very same flaws almost got herself, Monica & Kamala killed, all blasted into oblivion. Imagine if the Khan family heard of Kamala's death at the hands of Captain Marvel, they'd never forgive her for real.

I always felt characters like her can exist, basically god level power, if there’s limitations like using the power physically harms her, her abilities have a set cap where once she uses it all she can’t again or that they’d be super destructive to the surrounding area, something to force the hero to have to limit it (all like Gandalf, where his powers are just so OP that he can’t use them much or he may hurt his companions). I like this change, it doesn’t fix the rest but it’s a good change that would make her character make more sense
...because they didn't. They didn't "race swap all their original character to fit all race", they "race swapped white characters to fit one single race". And "created a climate in which no one feels comfortable naming that one single race out of fear of losing their social networks account". There would have been a VERY different overall reaction if Mulan was cast as white, the Mermaid was Japanese, the Cinderella was a Nigerian woman and Coco was Norweigan. Now I'm not saying casting a Norwegian Coco wouldn't be just as stupid as casting a Shri Lankan Anastasia, but I think you can understand how there is an obvious difference between "mindless race swapping for the sake of diversity" and "deliberate erasure of characters of a specific race".

I used to work for Disney in the UK about 10 years ago. The HR department started reporting what was effectively quota's for their recruitment in regards to gender and race, and I actually brought up in a meeting that doing that could open them up to discrimination lawsuits. My comment didnt go down well at the time... and look where we are now

If the character is always described and depicted as White, don’t change the race to appease a small audience. Basically, if you ain’t White, you don’t get the part. You know, the same treatment they’ve given to every other role. You have to be “the thing” to play “the part”.
@@OliverSkatt03 mixed on this. If you are doing a film set in medieval England then I do expect the whole cast to be white. There can be race swapping for many characters though and the recent Spiderman films did it fairly well.

But for characters like Ariel, create another mermaid movie based of african folklore instead. Same goes for snow white. Create a new icon, black people can still cosplay as ariel or play her in theathres though. I gave "Echo" a shot. It was lauded for its depiction of Native American culture, but it lost me in the first 15 minutes. They use American Sign Language instead of a Native American version. What a load of bollocks.
Alien was diverse. Pretty positive we had a lot of diverse casting in a lot of films in the late 80's into the 90's. We also didn't get hung up on 'He is like me, I feel represented.' I don't know why people think they can be represented by SciFi and Fantasy characters when Aliens and Magic are fiction. Get in touch with reality before you get wrapped up in stories, if a person requires movies for 100% validation, we have larger issues as humanity to deal with besides this crap.
Alien was very diverse at the time, female lead, black guy that doesn't die first and despite his initial selfish attitude is one of the first to throw himself in harm's way to try saving others, a cat, and the other female character on the crew (Lambert) is revealed (very small hard to miss detail in a "blink and you'll miss it" moment) to have been trans in the sequel. Some rumors float about that she was always intended to be trans, and they just never showed it in the original film because it never came up.
you said loki was good because they showed respect to the characters, and i totally agree. they say these characters are good because of the colour of their skin or because of their gender, which shows zero respect for the character itself.
I work in management and we have to do these courses on racism and inclusion etc multiple choice shit. One of the questions is who would you hire and i answered the person with the best skills for the job, this was the wrong answer the correct answer was a diverse team is better. To me this is racism since you are hiring based of the race of the person not there skill set.

We're supposed to buy into the narrative of them being a VIKING village. Now I am not talking about the ACTORS, I am talking about CHARACTERS. All I care you can have an entire cast of voice actors from Sardinia for your animated version, AS LONG as they actually SOUND right - so either with nordic accents, or with NO accent. When it comes to live action, a Viking village with an all-mongolian cast is NOT going to WORK.
I can't believe they aren't using the established black characters, etc. A solo Storm movie could be good. She is an ex-wife of Black Panther, so there's your connection to the MCU. They are also sleeping on Bishop. That would be dope. Bishop is a time traveler and in X-Men, which fits the current narrative. I'm surprised we won't see him in Deadpool and Wolverine. That's the perfect time to introduce him.

When a production company hires you, then expressively states the primary goal was to cast based on 'diversity', it has to suck as an actor right. Actors surely want to be chosen based on their abilities... not just because they have a non white skin tone? Isn't that what the whole problem was in the first place... discriminative casting. We are now back to the same kind of weird racist and sexist ideology the industry was accused on in the first place, it's just now that every lead character has to be a non white, non male, ethnic minority, non binary, or gender fluid ... Simply cast and written to meet diversity quota's ... The issue is the shows are being rejected, its not because the audience are anti diversity, racist or sexist... the truth is the writing teams have been told the shows need to only ever empower the diverse characters in the story, It makes for terrible scripts, lifeless story lines with often no tie to the source material. People love Stranger Things, people love Arcane, those shows tell amazing stories... and they are diverse, but diversity alone was not the driving factor in their creation. Please... create interesting and compelling stories... just chose the cast without prejudice.... based on each and every actors talent. Diversity then, will happen on its own, and people will watch.

Actually the Live remasters aren't literally telling the same story. They are altered for 'modern audiences' changing some critical aspects of the morals in each story, weakening the impact of many characters.

Critical Drinker gives credit when he can. A good example is his review of Prey, which he was surprisingly positive about after previously being rather negative about the trailer. Even his negative reviews often include things that he did like about the movies or shows, just to try to be fair.

I'm a woman who never cared about superhero comic books (But I do enjoy the MCU and superhero movies) and Star Wars, and the fact that they attempted to draw a female audience very poorly makes me even less interested.
I hate how when Disney gives people subpar products they run behind their racial and sex shields instead of actually fixing the problem. I agree that Loki is good, my only gripe is that it took the Loki out from him wanting to destroy earth and having killed so many people... To his sympathetic side we got from infinity war, all in the space of a video. For a character who deals with illusions, i thought that was strange as it could have been faked? But even still, he didn't actually go through the hardships the main story Loki went through, it was just a "we're able to take you out of this timeline, but we want the character arc Loki from the future, without repeating stuff"
He became a punch bag in his very own show. Season 2 was fine but you could felt how much they didn't care about the character itself. The focus was on the love triangle(the animated clock being one of them) and the Loki female version.(forgot her name)
Some people are never happy. I once mentioned "Rogue One" in admiration of it's impressively diverse cast of Chinese, Arab, Mexican, British, African American and Australian actors, and a particularly PC family member went on a spiel about how few women there were in that film. I couldn't believe it. Learn how to "take a compliment"! The film-makers made an effort. Try to meet them in the middle ground!
Women don't mind seeing hot men in movies as well. There's a reason why Brad Pitt was such an in demand actor for movies like Troy or Meet Joe Black. Same goes for Chris Hemsworth for instance. Would Meet Joe Black have a rating as high as it has if Brad Pitt was replaced by an actor that isn't charismatic?

I never looked at my classroom and said to myself "wow we have a few black people in our class.. and I see 2 latinos too" I just thought to myself "these are my classmates" only after growing up and being brainwashed by the media that I now look at people and think exactly like that "hey.. there are 3 black people there.. oh hey there are 2 latinos over there.." one of my favorite diverse movie: Accident man 2 one of my favorite non-diverse movie: Accident man Diversity didn't improve nor downgraded the sequel. The movies were just fun to watch. The story isn't complex or anything but it's enough for action flicks done right. And that's all you need. Btw, speaking of just a simple story done right, as of now, February 19th 2024, the highest grossing film of 2024 is The Beekeeper with 143 millions: a Jason Statham action flick, with a simple revenge story done right, with an added message in the first third of the movie regarding online fraud, which mind you is much easier to connect with than systemic racism, the grand woes of the LGBTQ community and so on. I don't think you even need a great story in some genres (action and horror even comedy come to mind), it's enough to deliver according to the expectations you create. I see a movie starring Jason Statham, I expect awesome fight scenes. Beekeeper delivered on that front in spades, the Expendables 4 failed miserably at that. With Tony Jaa and Iko Uwais in the cast too the disappointment was literally tripled. I am willing to bet that if the Expendables 4 gave us a solid, properly shot 5 minute fight between Iko and Tony and another one between Jason and Iko, the movie breaks even no questions asked. On the opposite end, if you give us an action movie with great fights AND a great story you end up with gems John Wick 3 and 4 or the Bourne trilogy.
Something to consider, as you pointed out half of the marvel audience was women already, and a big reason was because of the eye candy in the actors. It would be like Sports Illustrated replacing the hot models with weird men’s rights activists. The audience already told you what they wanted!

The Men in Black franchise was a race swap, Will Smith's character was originally white in the comic books. Nobody cared though, why? Because he wasn't shoved into the films just to tick off a diversity box, he was hired simply because he was popular and everyone loved him at the time. Same thing with I Am Legend. In fact, the two previous adaptions of the book (The Last Man on Earth and The Omega Man), starred Vincent Price and Charlton Heston. Did people care that Will Smith was a race swap? No, because the film was still good and he gave an incredible performance.
Even Amazon should get that lawsuit. They’re using the same hiring practices for their shows on Prime. (Except for Reacher cuz the creators of the show love the books and stick to the source material. The results-AMAZING)
I go to films if the characters are the most well written for example I despise Russians as much as I despise Chinese and North Korean people, but the One Piece anime and video games makes likes Chinese and Russian people equally because of how well written they are, so clearly the fault of why Hollywood films and tv series are falling because of terrible writers.
Remember 2022s masterpiece TOP GUN Maverick? Yeah. The real reason why almost all people across this country love that movie is because it only focused on is entertainment and fun only that was it. If the entire entertainment industry just take a great look at that movie their would have not been so much outrage and backlash. My parents and I really love that movie so much and will be an instant classic in the future. Same goes to 2023s Mission Impossible, Godzilla Minus One, Sound Of Freedom, Evil Dead Rise, and John Wick 4 Final Chapter. Those movies are also a prime example on why the entire entertainment industry should just focus on is entertainment and fun only. Today this year is off to a horrible start. Why? Because they did not learn anything from 2022s TOP GUN Maverick or my favorite movies back in 2023. January was horrible for many obvious reasons, February was just as horrible if not worse, so are only hope is March but we will see.

I totally agree! Disney has ruined the mcu and star wars by focusing on the diversity rather than the quality of the story.
