Richard M. Sherman, one half of the prolific, award-winning pair of brothers who helped form millions of childhoods by penning the instantly memorable songs for “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” - as well as the most-played tune on Earth, “It’s a Small World (After All)” - has died. He was 95.
Sherman, together with his late brother Robert, won two Academy Awards for Walt Disney’s 1964 smash “Mary Poppins” - best score and best song, “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” They also picked up a Grammy for best movie or TV score. Robert Sherman died in London at age 86 in 2012.

But why, when he was 95, do you offer this eulogy of a great and very talented man with “a heavy heart”? Is it because his legacy has been diminished because there is today no more magic in the movies? Because of the politicisation of everything?

At least this means that Richard will be finally reunited with his brother. They’re now making beautiful music together in Heaven.

It will always be a "Small World" if we just recognize our similarities and respect one another. Thanks to Richard and his brother for writing such a memorable theme. I will always remember it when I take that boat ride as it enters into "It's A Small World" at Disneyland. Condolences to the Sherman's family and Disney fans worldwide.

Brilliant songwriter, him and his brother wrote and produced 100s of songs for Disney and other movies. Including chitty chitty bang bang, which was not a Disney movie.

He and his Brother should have won an Academy Award for The Bedknobs and Broomsticks song Your at The age of not Believing and in know he was nominated for that song and I felt that way after 9/11 because I was in a new school didn’t know anybody at the time and as a Young man from New Jersey I should have watched Bedknobs and Broomsticks fun fact like Charlie in during in 2001 2002 I too was 11 going on 12 because maybe things would have been different after I saw that movie much earlier.

The Sherman Brothers set the Golden standards for what not only a Disney song should be, but what music in general should be like.

Another cherished household name from the 20th century gone. And another cherished household name who was Jewish. Did I have to say that? Yes, in today’s cynical world, I feel I must. Household names used to be household names which have now been replaced by “celebrities”: a rather vacuous and uninspiring word that goes hand in glove with the cheap and nasty entertainment we get today. So RIP Me Sherman. You were and still are a light in today’s grim, depressing world of entertainment. Household names are so named because they have earned the public’s affection. But we unfortunately don’t see it like that anymore, we don’t use the term. We take the greats from the past too much for granted, pocketing them like a handkerchief in case of emergency. Our focus on the grim today in the arts and entertainments and the politicisation of everything are not going to rescue the old good cheer of the West.
