If I remember correctly, people would often marry further into their family in the past, unaware of many aspects of genetics. I believe that was especially true with royalty as they wanted to keep their blood "pure" or something. So, in that regards, it wasn't that odd that beast were to marry his cousin.
@danynes4710
@danynes4710 7 лет назад
snowymitts yes, throughout history royal marriages took place between relatives. It was a "nobody's good enough for us except us" type of thing. It was also to keep rule of the kingdom in the family. You want to know what's worse than cousins marrying? In ancient Egypt pharaohs often married siblings.

Cousins? So were Prince Albert and Queen Victoria. This story is set in a time period before theirs, so incest wasn't really creepy back then. I actually like this version better than the Disney one despite the "dark" stuff, but I do love the lion-dog beast from Disney ♥

And their that's line from the first song "well it's no wonder that her name means beauty" - it's not like the fact is hidden for people who might not know French or name meanings.

When I was a child. There was a claymation version of " Beauty and The Beast ", The beast was a mix between a wolf and a lion, she had to go through a small maze everyday, and all the servants were "ghost like" or invisible. The two lead servants were animal hybrids through. The Beast did not die because of a side effect of the spell. The rose is different to, it is frozen in time, until it wilts. Then the spell is broken. They simply called instead of " Belle ", was changed to " Beauty Elizabeth ", it was from around 1989 to 1993. It was pretty good, I am disappointed it is not online through. It is sad, what his family did to him. So Beauty is a princess already. The cousin thing is not weird, if they are very distant or did not know.

1:20, he says "Beauty" is Belle's real name, but actually, in the original french version, the girl's name is Belle, it was translated to "Beauty" in the english version. And by the way, it's really not as simple as "Here's the gruesome original version of Beauty and the Beast and here's how Disney cut half of it to adapt it for children". There have been multiple versions of the fairy tale before Disney adapted it and they are all very different. Disney just used one of these versions (probably not the original) as an inspiration for their movie. And I did say "inspiration", they weren't necessarily trying to tell the same story.

Peter pan was based on an urban legend parents used to tell their children to scare them. It goes like this: when children went to bed at night a serial killer wandered the streets climbing up balconies and luring children away from their homes. This serial killer played a magical flute, luring the children out of their homes. He took them onto a rowboat and sailed to a deserted island and killed his newest victims there on the sand of the shore.

As far as I know, German families have the original collection of the Grimm's fairytales instead of the altered versions (of course, only if they even OWN a collection at all). E.g., I knew that in Snow White, Snowy's step-mom had to dance in burning hot shoes 'til she died, or that in Rapunzel the prince (and I think Punzy, too? Not quite sure rn) was blinded, and that Cinderellas or "Aschenputtels/Aschenbrödels" (German synonym for wallflower) -as she's called in the original- sisters had to cut off their toes/heels to fit in the slipper, as well as their eyes had been pecked out by doves at the end because of their cruelty to Cinderella.

Belle, with an "E" at the end is the french word for beauty as use in the story in its original language, the proper title is "la belle et la Bête"

I still love the version where Belle has 2 older sisters who want only nice stuff and she asks for a rose. They laugh at her and tell her she is stupid. Also when their dad goes to the market they tell him to bring the gifts while she only ask him to look out for himself and return safely. When the father returns he tells about the beast and his request to bring one of his daughters Belle is shocked while her sisters are mad at their father for not bringing their gifts. Belle volunteers to go to the Beast and while her father's says no, her older sisters tell her yes so they can have her stuff and so their father doesn't have to feed her and they would become rich again. They also hope Belle would die. However when Belle returns to see her father and sisters and they see how well clothed she is, the two sisters become jealous and try to convince Belle to stay longer than the 2 weeks she promised. They say they missed her in hope she would stay and the beast would kill her and she falls for their lies. One night she looks into the mirror only to find out the beast lying in the rose garden, dying. She doesn't wait a minute but takes a horse and goes back to help him. She tells the Beast that she is in love with him and he becomes human again. However at the wedding Belles sisters show up and ask for forgiveness in hope that they can marry some of Beasts friends. Belle sees through their plan and tells them she is done with their mocking and bullying and they become stone but mentain conscious to become statues in the castle to see Belles happiness as their punishment. Speaking of karma😂

Disney didn't invented the enchanted objects of the Beast's castle: in fact, many elements from Disney's Beauty and the Beast were inspired by Jean Cocteau's film from 1946. Thought I would just mention it.

I watched the movie this weekend and something that I found very disturbing was that when Belle and beast were racing in the ball room it looked like Belle was racing with a devil. I was maybe two seconds but disturbing.

Not only is the original one messed up but they seem to complicate things a bit, with Beauty's back story and Beast's back story I guess in books you kinda have to, to make it well length. I'm glad Disney made it more simple, charming and well...less incest. I get cousins are far blood from each other but eh...you can't blame people for thinking that's kinda....not so pleasant.

There is also the versions where Beauty only has two sisters. One where they are awful and jealous of her when she returns and another when their Father dies and they aren't that bad. But Beauty ends up staying to long, one by accident the other by trickery.

From what I've heard, in the original story Belle's sisters gets jealous because she married a prince, so they decide to drown and kill her. I can't remember how she comes back to life, I think the enchantress brings her back to life so she can accuse and kill her sisters for killing her and she's with her husband again.

In all fairness about the cousin thing, in that era it was common for cousins to marry, i'm not sure exactly when it was stopped but i've heard of some cases nowadays when you're allowed to marry any of your cousins, from Second cousins onwards (wouldn't do it myself lol but love is love lol)

To be honest I would have liked Prince Adam to remain in Beast form, course I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted it that way. I guess I'm just thinking if it were me xD awesome facts though!

3:56-4:15 They actually did add that element from the original fairy tale into the recent film. 5:33-6:13 Though in actuality the Beast's description is pretty vague, many depict it as a lot of animals, mostly a lion, or a bear, or a wild boar. 8:52 Actually Gaston was based on a character in the 1946 Jean Cocteau version of Beauty and the Beast, a rival suitor Avenant. 8:37 That is one controversy that I do have a problem with,. Sure the syndrome probably existed ever since the fairy tale was told in the 1750s, but the name wasn't coined yet until the 1970s with the Swedish bank robbery. Back then they would've considered it brainwashing or manipulation. One thing though you forgot to mention is that the true antagonists in the original story was Belle's older stepsisters. Which are basically almost the same as Cinderella's stepsisters. They were the ones that purposefully made Belle stay longer than her due date to return to the castle. Hoping to have the Beast eat her in anger. And when the good fairy turned the Beast back into a Prince, she punished the sisters severely by turning them into stone statues, telling them that in the only way to revert back to human again was if someone found love in return. Though a good video anyway.

Now I myself am an artist / cartoonist and I know well to all that with "The Dark Side of Disney" Yes, many of their stories are old folk tales and stories from 17 or 1800. Some of them are from The brothers Grimm from Germany (They wrote not even the stories but, got them released) and Hans Christian Andersen from Denmark. I myself am from Denmark. :-)

I've heard two versions of Beauty and The Beast. In the first version, Beauty didn't arrive back to the castle at time, and Beast dies. Instead tuning into statues, sisters go to Hell. In the second version, Beauty was drowned in the bathtub. Beauty becomes a ghost and she has to find a true love that she can go to Heaven. Both versions are pretty dark.
