I don’t think kids care about the races of characters they see in shows, however I do think that it subconsciously wires girls to think that Caucasian girls are representative of beauty, as this is the only race that they are being shown portrayed as “princesses”. Young girls should look up to multinational and multiracial characters. What Disney should do is make more characters of all different shapes and colours, and not change existing ones. Having a diversity in the demographics of characters eliminates racial dominance and implies that beauty is irrespective of skin colour.

Because I remember as a kid I always liked Flora and Aisha from the winx club the most just because they were black (I just recently discovered Flora wasn't black lol) they looked like me and whenever I played imaginary winx club with my friends, I would always play as one of those two characters. Same with Strawberry shortcake, I always liked Orange more because she was the only character that looked like me, so I gravitated towards her. Stop looking at her race and focus on how she plays Ariel, and her voice in the trailer was phenomenal. It is important to have representation in the media. There are so many races, cultures, and types of people in the world and for so long it was mainly just one group being showcased and represented in media consistently. It's not like there's no existence of people of color in different TV shows and films, but they are often reduced to stereotypes or playing supporting roles. I don't think there's anything wrong with demanding more when it comes to representation, especially when it's so lacking. White people are represented often and there is a wide range in the types of characters they get to represent. There are so many genres and character roles that you don't see POC in and that's because society/the world has grouped them into being one thing, while white people can be anything. I think that the push for more media representation has had its pros and drawbacks, the pros are that we are getting more range in POC character portrayals, the drawbacks are that sometimes the diversity or representation is poorly executed, and you can tell that something was written or added in to be "inclusive" whether than it feeling natural and a part of the content.

A lot of black children & parents just get excited about having representation in children’s films. As a child I never really thought about it because my mom would go out her way to buy us black children’s books and turn on black cartoons (which were hard to find), but looking back I did wish I saw more cartoons/princesses that looked like me. Yes, we did get Princess Tiana BUT she was a frog the entire film. This is kinda off topic, but it did suck on Halloween wanting to dress up as a Disney Princess and the only option was tiana lol. Like I wanted to be cinderella but I knew damn well I looked nothing like her. The only identifying feature was the dress 😭 I just looked a mess. But the white children could literally be ANY character they wanted andddd it was obvious what they were and they actual did look like the character bc of the color of their skin. Although many may not agree on changing Ariel’s race, there are so many other movies featuring a white Princess that it doesn’t make much sense to be mad over THIS one. This movie looks corny af to me but I do love to see black kids happy that one of their favorite characters look like them.
@sianais
@sianais Год назад
Swapping skin for characters sets a bad precedent no matter which way you cut it. It's just one of many "white" princesses is no excuse. It's dangerous to teach kids that doing a skin swap is all they need or should expect. Tiana wasn't just a skin suit, her story involved elements of specific part of black culture in New Orleans. Mulan wasn't a skin suit, even though some stuff was made you got to see bits of Chinese culture. Moana got that. Pocahontas got that. Belle is French. Rapunzel is German. Merida is Scottish. And by your logic they can be lumped under their skin tone and erased for another group with another skin tone. Pushing for black faces on white stories isn't representation, it's tokenism except for some reason folks today are glad for it. Cooperations like Disney are happy for it too because they don't have to push for new characters and can just repaint old ones to the flavour of the month. One day black won't be that flavor. There's a reason most don't know Brandy was once Cinderella. Don't accept empty representation. I rather have Moesha, Kenan and Kel, My Wife and Kids, The Cosby Show, The Bernie Mac Show, Sanford and Son, The Fresh Prince, Sister Sister, In Living Colour, Living Single, The Wayans Brothers, Family Matters, The Sinbad Show, Jett Jackson (rest Lee Thompson Young's soul), The Princess and the Frog, etc. than some Friends reboot with a diverse cast nobody will remember in a couple years. Imagine how awesome it would be if Halle was given a character that was based on her, with her own name and a story that belonged to her likeness alone.

@AneXineohp Год назад

There’s no way kids actually care about “representation” (that racist bull), I can’t wrap my head around it. I don’t think/know any kid of any race, unless they were taught to be a racial supremacist, jumped for joy when they saw a character with the same race as them. It’s not like that character looks like them because they share the same race. That logic of “racial representation” reminds me of how everyone called any black kid a Lost Boy (usually as a joke) when we watched The Good Lie in school just because of the actors’ race and because Lost Boys were Sudanese, and well, black. I dunno, i become physically repulsed by the term “representation” these days. I get cultural representation, but not racial representation.

ESPECIALLY in kids content. So when we do get something, it resonates. Just think about when black people who ain’t never seen a superhero movie in their life were lining up to see Black Panther. Many people make the point of "well what if we changed an originally black character to be white," and even though I do see the point, those two scenarios cannot be compared because majority of the time, disney creates minority princesses and storylines based literally off of their race and cultural background.(ex. princess and the frog is based around an actual black woman who owned a restaurant in new orleans) So it wouldn't make logical sense to cast a white actress to play a black, indian, or polynesian character because their storyline is almost entirely about their culture and ethnicity. But when it comes to white princesses, their storyline has almost nothing to do with their race, so it leaves a space for anyone to play that character
