The Little Mermaid is a 2023 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay written by David Magee. Co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, DeLuca, Marshall, and Marc Platt Productions, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1989 animated film of the same name, which itself is loosely based on the 1837 fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The film stars singer Halle Bailey in the title role, alongside Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy. The plot follows the mermaid princess Ariel, who is fascinated with the human world; after saving Prince Eric from a shipwreck, she makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula to walk on land.

Would've been better if we had her as a new Disney Princess. We only have Tiana as our only black princess with the Disney Princess canon. I don't count Asha since she's not from royalty.

I remember when this movie came out, people were arguing that Vanessa's actress should have been cast as Ariel, her voice was so perfect for the role, perfect disney princess vibes. Not even realising that it was Halle's voice in that scene? The hypocrisy of these people, only agreeing that Halle was perfect for the role when her voice was coming out of a white body. Truly speaks volumes

When I first went to see it in theaters. When the first song came up, everybody was quiet, waiting to see how she would sing after the song ended. People clapped and cheered. They realized she was Ariel.

To clarify a doubt, yes, all Ariel's sisters and herself are from the same father and mother, King Triton and Queen Athena (in the book guide to merfolk, which they released for this movie, Queen Athena is shown as a mermaid stingray) and why each daughter of Triton is physically different, they basically explained that it is because each of them was born in one of the seven seas and took on the physical appearance that each sea represents.

I saw this movie in theaters and it was like reliving my childhood. The little mermaid was on of my favorite Disney movies growing up, and Halle was a perfect cast for Ariel. Especially during Part of that world. I'm not gonna lie, when that song came up, i actually cried. Don’t know why but i just felt so emotional.

The sisters having a movie sort of happened. Little Mermaid 3: Ariel's Beginning. It's one of the disney sequels with a budget, so the animation doesn't look terrible. It has Sally Field as a villain with an adorable manatee as a sidekick. It's a prequel so it features all the sisters and gives them a little characterization to flesh them out, Attina's the oldest and most responsible, Adella's boy crazy, etc. Interestingly despite being a disney sequel, they did take some inspiration from it for this movie. We get the backstory of how Ariel's mother died by human intervention, which was carried over to this movie. Now for something involving the live action sisters (who have different names and have actual political power as opposed to the original cartoon where only Attina was being prepared for inheriting the crown) there is I believe a book they released about them detailing their individual personas. Ursula being Triton's sister was originally in the cartoon but they ignored it for some reason. It pops up in a lot of other Disney media about The Little mermaid tho, especially in the stage musical. In the musical she even had 6 sisters of her own, all who died under her watch for her to claim the throne. She forgot Triton was born apparently.

Halle Bailey as Ariel is so good, like for her first time in a leading role it's very decent, and the singing? Sent chills down my spine 😭 and most of the changes (story-wise) in this movie makes it a real remake, this might be one of the few Disney live action remakes that I love

According to the writers or execs all the princesses have the same mother and father, they were just conceived in different seas, hence the differences lol I really adore this remake, definitely one of the best EVER live action ones.

Loved what they did in expanding the story; she's wonderful and the cast is great. I bought the soundtrack on vinyl record, and it's molded in an ocean foam color. Very cool.

I think I have seen this movie 7 times at least. I saw it twice in theaters. Once with my mom and another time with one of my friends who hadn’t seen it while staying with her. I also the DVD and Blu-ray plus the 4k and Blu-ray (which I got for Christmas) and the steelbook with the 4k and Blu-ray in it
