The original creator of Pinocchio hated children. He made Pinocchio rebellious for a reason that even ended up with Pinocchio getting hung because he listened to the fox. That was as real as the story could get. The moral there was the usual "Be good or die" seen in so many fairytales. There wasn't any fairy who gave him life, she was a growing girl who sent Pinocchio into a depression after faking her death then temporarily adopting him as her own son. Pinocchio was just a talking piece of wood Master Antonio sold to Geppetto. Heck, Pinocchio essentially called Child Protection Services on Geppetto and killed the cricket at the beginning, amputated the cat burglar, caused a laughing snake to die from a ruptured artery, got skinned alive by fishes and reverted back to a puppet after turning into a donkey who was being drowned for his skin, and watched Lampwick die in front of his very eyes after being worked to death. It took so many things to get him to develop as a character once the final version of the book came out.

I think the worst part is how Pinocchio earns his freedom from the cage by lying. In the original, he was only freed because he admitted he was lying and that it was wrong, creating one of the most iconic analogies in Disney's history. In the remake, his lying is the very thing that earns him his freedom, implying that lying is good.

@@ItzMarionette as someone who did watch it, it's actually one of the better, at least comparable remakes? Which isn't much, but it's not as bad or offensive in contrast to others like TLK, Pinocchio and mulan etc cause there's some changes that has some merit even if it's minor (Some spoilers ahead if you don't mind) For the remake they developed and added more character personality and proactiveness for lady who was just there in the original (tramp is more of the active protag which makes sense ig?), removed the Siamese cats which can be viewed as untasteful and racist towards the Chinese (ngl the new Devon Rex twin replacement and music scene was actually a fun alternative bop) and gave both lady and tramp more bonding time, banter, a bit more of a dynamic to make the bond more solid in a way compared to how fast they get together at the original in a short time. But at the same time they changed the message of the movie in the end into adopt don't shop + removed the puppies entirely, toned down the contrast between social Circle commentary between the rich and the poor, censored and toned down the more suggestive parts implied in the first (not necessarily a bad thing but noticeable throughout) and changed Jacques into a female pup for some unknown reason to name a few. Its just like an alternate universe lady and the tramp in my eyes and there's some parts that are better on either original and remake imo
@sylvette.astoria

It's just an alright inoffensive remake that's really under advertised that it's like passing ships in the night... Which didn't help the case to be known I suppose. Granted there's more freedom liberties to work with this remake as a plus since the original has parts that are rushed or not as interesting/one note caricatures to a lot of the audience today who wants a bit more nuance and relatability - some changes are good, some are aight, some are odd, overall it's just ok and chill to watch if you're a dog person, animal lover or during some boring downtime I suppose

I decided to compare the donkey scenes from the remake and the original and what I found was the original was better in every way. The kid sounding older in the original gives more of a sense that he SHOULD know better. The younger voice doesn't give it any favor. The original is scarier as it shows a cartoony donkey with music that implies how horrific it is. The remake makes the donkey look real which losses some of the horror as its already hard to look at. The changing of hands into hooves was shown in the original which gives a sense of no return as the mama scream is haunting. The remake literally destroys all of this by showing it in shadows(Yes the original did it as well but not as much). One of the most iconic lines of the original was ruined by donkey sounds. A great way to show the disaster this film is as it completely ruined the moment.

Another thing that I think makes the original better is the technique itself. Because the original was entirely 2D animated, the kid transforms into something made the same way he is, it feels more natural and real. In the remake, however, the shift from live action to CGI for the character takes a lot away from the transformation, because you see he is something else entirely
@theoryfoxes1879
@theoryfoxes1879 Год назад
@@michelepioantonio106 Exacly. This is a thing that usually happens with animal transformation in movies. It happens most often in werewolf movies, since its pretty darn hard to do it else way. But, it is possible to do it in a way that IS convincing. Take American Werewolf in London. The transformation scenes looked so real and painfull even though as the viewer you know it isn't. Now look at any werewolf movie made in the last decade. The realism is mostly gone. This is mostly because the use of CGI instead of practical effects makes it less convincing. Obviously that is one of the issues in Pinnochio. The scene were the kid transforms is not very good, especially the scene with jackass. The donkey looks extremely fake and unconvincing, worse than Lion King. Why? Well they made the mistake of adapting a scene that only worked due to being cartoonish. When you watch any transformation in a any movie, the seen has weight as long as we see the human behind the transformation. In a cartoon its usually the eyes, which is why it worked in the original. As he transforms his eyes stay the same, you still see the child inside the donkey, you see his suffering. But in live action its normally the face. Which is why it doesn't work. His face changes instantly and that causes the transformation losing weight. Not to mention it looks bad as heck, due to them trying to make a donkey make facial expressions that no equine would be able to make. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

The original Pinocchio from 1940 depicted underage drinking and smoking in a bad light. The problem is not the alcohol and tobacco depictions, but if the movie depicts them in a negative light, it’s obvious that it’s there to teach the viewers that it’s clearly something that kids shouldn’t do.

I think it's outdated and shouldn't be in the remake anyway. Smoking was way bigger in the 1940s and I think lots of kids wanted to try it at the time, so it made sense for it to be in the movie. The blue fairy only being there to bring Pinocchio to life is a massive disservice to the character. In the original, she’s the one who sees an old man who’s given his entire life to making others happy with his clocks, & decides that he deserves to have his one wish granted. However, what’s important is that she doesn’t stop there. She keeps an eye on Pinocchio throughout his whole journey & helps steer him right. She does this b/c it is HER responsibility. SHE brought him to life. That means SHE is responsible for what happens to him & his father. It’s HER responsibility to help him try & become real, b/c, keep in mind, it’s HER who wants to fulfill Geppetto’s wish. She obviously thinks a lot about Geppetto & believes he deserves to be happy. She did this for him. This means, if Pinocchio fails, she fails him AND Geppetto. She fails to give this kind, loving man & his son the lives they deserve. Meanwhile, this fairy just comes to drastically alter both of their lives & dips. There is no care behind her actions at all. Now, instead of a wise, fair lady, she’s an irresponsible mischief maker. The Blue Fairy was always a highlight of whatever scene she was in. She was a being that radiated an aura of wisdom & wonder. She was as mysterious as she was loving, & she didn’t abandon those she deigned to grace with her favor.

Personally, I really like the way the fox (and somewhat cat) was animated. It was cartoony enough to not be uncanny and realistic enough to be visually interesting and recognisable. I believe the slight over-animation is intentional to stop him being deadpan and to contrast his realistic appearance, and I think it works pretty well. I feel like if the Lion King remake was animated more like that, with genuine emotion, it would've been a decent movie. They got most of the realistic animal movements right, but there was just no emotion and a lot of life, like songs, facial expressions, and certain shots, were removed from it. Seeing a realistic, zoologically accurate (but still emotional) rendition could have be really interesting, but Disney is just so goddamn bad at it.

Pinocchio was already toned down in the original movie, here they made it so flawless that he wouldn't even need Jiminy Cricket. The blue fairy never appears again, Fabiana the puppeteer feels like a wasted character, Lampwick is such a contrast to Pinocchio that you almost feel satisfied instead of horrified during the transformation scene. Don't get me even started with the CGI. The cat and the fox segments were funny, the easter eggs were kinda cool and Geppetto's past was interesting but overall the movie felt like a big missed shot, which was quite expected, considering how most of recent Disney live action movies have been missed shots of a missed volley.

After Pinocchio gets kicked out of school, he follows his own conscience in which he's successfully convinced by Honest John that becoming an actor is the best thing for him to do (instead of going home and having Geppetto confront the headmaster) and disregards what Jiminy (who's trapped in a jar) told him earlier. He even lies to Jiminy in the cage instead of admitting his wrongdoings even as his nose grows longer. That alone shows he's still naive. Fabiana and Sabina do result in Stromboli getting comeuppance for his actions (something which never happend to any villain in the original) and the 2 of them have a happy ending so they're not entirely wasted.

@@j.c.2240 To be clear, you shouldn't use the blame to pile guilt, but rather to find faults with which to improve and to take ownership of your life. For instance in an abusive relation what is your fault is that you allowed someone else to manipulate you and you chose wrong, and look for what led you to that wrong, then decide if that is something you want to correct or are willing to suffer for again as well as taking the actions to leave the abusive relationship. Stoicism, control, enacting control over your surroundings are very important concepts. It's not so much blame as taking up responsibility over your own life and if someone else is impacting it take the responsibility to walk away from that. Setting the responsibility on anyone else, even if it's not really your fault, is not going to help you. Now, you need to know how to analyze WHAT was the issue in order to do this.

It's not weakness or being irresponsible to say " this person hurt me" or "this situation that I can't control has screwed me over". It's possible to commit no error and still lose, and recognizing that fact has been proven to be more helpful for the average person than your approach of 'take responsibility, even if you did nothing wrong to cause the situation'.

Honestly, the adaptation of the Pleasure Island scene is most probably a victim of Disney's toothlessness and unwillingness to take risks, and this theme is not intentional. But if we take it at face value, the message is this: Going to a glitzy amusement park, drinking root beer, having too much candy, and enjoying attractions as directed (like yeah, breaking clocks is kinda fucked up, but the game is to literally do that!) are sinful enough to merit being turned into a donkey. Pinocchio is so mild-mannered in this adaptation that he is disgusted by it all to begin with, but starts turning into a donkey simply by being there and associating with the children actually having fun. This a grimly Puritan take on "good child" behavior.

Me: I hated how we derived away from doing bad things will have consequences moral. He goes to school as Jiminy said but is kicked out for being a puppet when there are walking upright animal conartists in town. He's encouraged to lie to get out of the cage when he could have been set free by his new friend. He isn't a kid in the pleasure island scenes. He's a hostage that doesn't want to do bad things but then why go here in the first place? Oh right peer pressure from the kids. So the film encourages kids to 1.) forget about learning and focus on fame. 2.) Encourage kids to lie their way out of a problem 3.) Do whatever anyone pressures you into. 4.) Drinking soda is... bad???? The only thing that stays partially the same from the 1940's version is Pinocchio runs away from home, but for different motives.

I think they heard that Guillermo Del Toro was in discussion with Netflix over completing his long abandoned rendition of Pinocchio and they decided to push production of the film to try and capitalise on the discussion and be seen as the 'original'. It would explain how rushed it seems at every point, as if the writing team and planning was given fractional time, not to mention the art departments. Both projects were stalled but Diseys began production in 2021 whereas Del Toro's was picked up by Netflix in 2018. They were both bound to happen, it just seems like Disney decided to really push for its release and they had really so little time to make a movie with so much animation involved. For reference, Encanto took 5 years and the Aladdin remake took 2-3 years I think.

I feel like Disney forgot the entire point of Pinocchio screwing up in the first place; it’s not that he was a bad kid in the original film, he was just naive and easily misled. He takes everything people tell him at face value when he’s first born, just like a kid who doesn’t know anything else, whether it’s Geppetto telling him he needs to go to school, or Honest John telling him he could be an actor with ease. What made it *better* was that he still consciously chose to go off acting, even when Jiminy stopped him and reminded him of the responsibilities to go to school- he made an impulsive mistake, and feels embarrassed about it later, but he learns from it. As a young kid WOULD do. Making Pinocchio always good-intended and never making him have any faults ruins the entire arc he’s meant to go through.

Does anyone remember a time when Disney’s live action remakes were rare? Believe it or not, yes, there was a time when one would go YEARS before one was even considered. They weren’t cash grabs and they did in fact change some things in the story. Most of the story beats were there but they would add a new point to the plot. One example was 101 Dalmatians. In the remake, Cruella was the head of a famous fashion company that Anita worked for. How Cruella got her inspiration for the spotted coat was Anita was making designs for outfits and had drawn one that was inspired by Perdy her dog. The image entranced Cruella so much that she made the iconic line: “It’s almost as if I’m wearing your dog. Woof! Woof!” then laughing hysterically. And yes, Disney used the fashionista version of Cruella for her prequel movie. Now, compare that too the most recent waves of truly uninspired IPs. They aren’t trying something new, some movies going so far as to be shot for shot remakes, if they do change the story veer off HARD into losing the entire point, or my absolute favorite adding more plot (padding) to the story that didn’t need any more. Not to even mention that they are shelling these out at a rapid pace. Let’s be very real here, most of these movies do not go on to be classics. They aren’t used as memes, no one can recite any quotes of new dialogue, and probably most stupid thing about these live action remakes is that they genuinely feel… lifeless. I will point out a scene from a movie to show what I am referring to: the scene and musical number “Be Our Guest”. The original was sung by Jerry Orbach (RIP). The entire sequence from start to finish had so much flair, life, from Lumiere singing about the wonderful meals that Belle will consume to telling her that even the dishes believe the same. You can see his facial expressions as he sings at her, the musical also includes Cogsworth trying IN VAIN to keep everyone quiet and stop the show. I didn’t really like the movie (burn out. My mom would watch it again and again FOR HOURS!) but I greatly enjoyed that musical number. Yes, even more so than “Beauty and the Beast” sung by Angela Lansbury. Now I haven’t seen the remake because I refuse to but I HAVE seen the “Be Our Guest” musical number and although, it appears to be the exact same musical number as the cartoon version… it didn’t FEEL the same. When they do a close up shot of Lumiere, he isn’t as expressive. Which to be fair, if memory serves of the images I had seen of the enchanted servants.. their faces were… painted on (?) therefore the expressions aren’t that easily conveyed. However, that’s where the live action remake of “Be Our Guest” fails. It’s… clearly not a project made from love, understanding, nor to truly move you. It’s like bringing a piece of junk to an auto show. They can give it a new coat of paint but you will still be able to spot all the rust, obvious mitch-match tires, the parts of the body that don’t belong to the original. The same can be said for “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” in the new The Lion King. The fact that they went so far into being realistic… the expressions of love between Simba and Nala appears… well… boring. Heck, the original scene was sooooo good all that they did for the music video was superimpose Elton John into the scene! In summary, live action remakes are cash grabs and as long as audiences go to see them… they won’t stop.
