Anybody remember how Celebration kinda bombed? 🙁 It hurts my heart to hear about all the people who spent so much money to buy a home there and it really didn’t do well. We used to go there every time we visited Disney and it was always kinda dead. I can honestly say that I don’t see Disney’s future housing stuff panning out well. They really shine when it comes to theme parks, and as of now, their theme parks need work. Even the biggest fans feel like Disney is overpriced and not enough value for the cost presently. Not to mention the squicky wasteful idea of Disney probably using a lot of water in the desert, which, given our current environmental crisis, wouldn’t be a good look for them.

Ironically, before Golden Oak was built, the subdivision was DE-ANNEXED from the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which provides government services to the Disney resort (I thought the whole point of this was to live on Disney property). So in actuality all Golden Oak property owners are residents of unincorporated ORANGE COUNTY, making them ineligible to vote on Reedy Creek matters.

The very fact that you either need to shell out for a club membership or buy a day pass to even just go shopping or chill on the beach is ridiculous to me. Also, California doesn't allow private beaches so I have zero clue how they're going to be able to enforce the day pass needed for that part. To me, this sounds like they didn't really think any of this through and just went with whatever would make them the most money. I do not see this ending well at all. I also forgot about the whole mega drought thing we have going on here right now so I can 100% see a ish ton of protesters telling Disney to not build it because other people need that water more than they do. Like literally people are dying here because they don't have access to enough clean drinking water because of mega corps like Disney and Nestle coming in and stealing what little useable water we have left and poisoning the rest while the regular people have to conserve water. I really hope this falls through and never gets mentioned again. Disney are hypocrites. But what else is new.
@cindywells9119
@cindywells9119 2 года назад
My guess is that not allowing private beaches probably doesn’t apply to entirely manmade beaches that are not on the coastline. I have to say that I would take a hard pass on this community; not a huge fan of hemorrhaging money.
@KassMcCormack
@KassMcCormack 2 года назад
@@cindywells9119 Actually it's all beaches, including man made ones. The only ones that don't count are ones that are obviously pools. Anything else has to be open to the public. We had to look into it because we had a neighbor at the beach try to have us arrested for walking in front of their house.

Yep. More "pay for the privilege of spending money" from Disney. I'm just waiting for the day they start charging $20 for parking at Disney Springs
@KassMcCormack
@KassMcCormack 2 года назад
@@emilykawaii123 I wouldn’t put it past Cheapek to try to charge for everything. Drove your car? There’s a charge. Going through security? Gotta pay there, too. Taking the tram? Gas isn’t free so pay up. Filling up your reuseable water bottle? Nothing is free so you gotta pay for water. Need to use the bathroom? Hope you brought your credit card. Breathing the same air as Mickey? *hand out, palm up* Money, please. It’s getting ridiculous and driving the theme parks into the ground.

Walt Disney would be shocked and dismayed. I remember watching him talk about Disneyworld, Epcot and the communities of tomorrow. His dream was a good one. If he had lived I'm sure he would have been environmental conscious as well. Alas, Cotina is just the average looking "homes for the rich." No radical futuristic architecture, no sense of community at all. The damage to the fragile desert environment is unacceptable. I grew up in California, spending most of my childhood in the desert. It's sad to see what corporations have done in the name of "progress." From what I've seen of this community they haven't made their homes compatible with the desert environment. It's just sad to see the name "Disney" attached to such things. Walt Disney would be really sad. He wanted to make money, yes. But he had a dream! So sad his dream has just been turned into a corporate money-making scheme.

Here was a chance to design and build something like the real EPCOT that Walt envisioned back in the 60s, and all we get is an overpriced and negatively received typical suburban masterplanned community. I know at the end of the day, it is a business, but imagine if they built a dense, walkable, and sustainable community (with an updated Peoplemover) that could be a blueprint for the future American city. Even with sustainability in mind, they surely would get a return in investment. With the influence that the Walt Disney Company has, they totally have the ability and team full of immensely creative people to do this.
@justnoel4088
@justnoel4088 2 года назад
The real Epcot wouldn't survive and would have been just as bad a disaster. People likened the plan to Rapture from Bioshock, an entire town made as a test bed for the newest and latest technological advances by corporations governed by one of the biggest corporations in America, it would have been dystopian as hell.
@drdewott9154

The last thing we need is more car dependent, single family home gated communities away from everything else and exclusive for the rich living there. Like C'mon Disney was a public transit advocate, at least try to make something with apartments, where one can easily and practically walk or bike around, and get around to other towns and districts by public transit like a train, tram, or even just a bus rapid transit line. But then again this is Disney, just like all other major American mega corporations, they only care about whatever can get them to earn more money and profit and preferably, the MOST money and profit, all while not caring about the concerns for anyone else. Typical Americana. Wouldn't even step foot anywhere near it.

I have no idea what the benefit would be. Golden Oaks while being expensive, still has perks and is right near the parks. This is built over somewhere Walt himself loved the nature of. They are literally ripping out of the ground the stuff Walt Disney loved, to put a bland suburb with his name on it? Bring back a CEO who cares about Walt's vision.

I do love Disney and their storytelling, but…really? I doubt it will get built. Because…well…what’s the effing point in building a town that no one can afford to live in and no one wants to live in it as a cast member? I mean, besides the whole environmental aspect, this whole thing seems half baked and I doubt that anyone will want to live in it. It was announced back in February, yet we have heard NOTHING about this. So my guess is that they probably have up on it. This reminds me a bit of a “Black Mirror” episode.

I feel like this is a neighborhood that would be offended by a single fart outside your home. You'll have to obey the world's strictest HOA and have to walk on eggshells. A patch of your grass refuses to live even though you've tried everything to keep it alive? The HOA doesn't care. You're doomed.

I doubt I'd wanna live there, but I'd love to be a person who COULD live there. Or even better, the child of someone who could live there. Imagine being able to say to yourself "All right, I'm tired of dealing with all of life's issues. I'll just move into a custom-built gated community where they offer everything I could ever want and the goal is to make me feel like I'm living in a movie". The marketing is disgusting, but it is so effective at tapping into that primal wish of being able to conserve energy by having all your needs already met. In short, this Storyliving thing isn't making me want to move there as much as it's making me imagine what it would be like to be filthy rich.

I don't think this behavior of Disney's will stop until it totally crashes. My take: After being the victim of several hostile takeover attempts in 1983, Disney became convinced that they needed to become an aggressive, voracious financial money engine in order to survive. This became successful for them as the money started steadily pouring in. They were financially safe(r) now. But like a blood-thirsty tick, each time it eats, it grows. And now the bigger it gets, the more money it needs to keep growing (under the same survival ethos). And they cycle has been repeating constantly ever since. And it, from a company standpoint, literally cannot stop "eating" until they "pop."
