***CORRECTION*** During the Fun and Fancy Free segment, I refer to the man at the birthday party as Edward Bergen. His name is Edgar Bergen. Oopsies.

True! I was born in Russia in 1995 and this film is still my favourite Disney work. The single-voice dub left original voices to be distinguishable and created the magic I can not describe.

This is a tough era to rank so I applaud your efforts in doing so. I'll try my best here. 6. Melody Time (I'm kinda surprised you put this one at #1 to be honest but to each their own. Personally I found the stories less engaging than the rest of the Wartime Era though I do enjoy this movie nonetheless.) 5. Fun and Fancy Free (Edgar Bergan drags this down a bit for me, but the stories themselves I enjoyed.) 4. Make Mine Music (extremely underrated and I find the stories much more interesting than Melody Time) 3. The Three Caballeros (I agree with the live action not a good idea in this, but I can't help it. Everything else is too fun for me to ignore.) 2. Saludos Amigos (shortest movie of the Disney Animated Canon but still a genuinely fun time.) 1. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad (this felt the most cohesive of the Wartime Era. Both stories are excellent, the animation is excellent and while I wish both could've gotten their own solo movie I'm certainly not disappointed with what we got.)
@flippyfrogman
@flippyfrogman 2 года назад
Edit: This opinion is outdated but I agree with some of the points made here more than others The Wartime Era films are criminally underrated. Make Mine Music and Melody Time are more interesting versions of Fantasia, Ichabod and Mr. Toad is an amazing film on its own, Saludos Amigos and Three Caballeros are beautiful and creative, I’m not fond of Fun and Fancy Free, but I love the creative animation and stories. Melody Time’s Blame it on the Samba segment is my favorite segment in any Fantasia-esque film

I don’t personally love watching them but I can agree that they’re underrated - especially when it comes to animation. It’s nice to see them get some love!
@WillScarlet16
@WillScarlet16 Год назад
I don't see how they're more interesting than Fantasia. To me most of the shorts in those movies come off as bland little crowd-pleasers without any of the truly groundbreaking work you see in Fantasia.
@flippyfrogman
@flippyfrogman Год назад
@@WillScarlet16 My opinions have changed quite a bit since I made this comment. I still think the wartime movies are artistically pleasing and good in their own right. I think I said they’re more interesting than Fantasia because, while I found it to be a very good movie, it did bore me a bit. I also found the music more “catchy,” but, you’re right, Fantastia is definitely more interesting overall
@flippyfrogman
@flippyfrogman Год назад
And I think I liked Blame it on the Samba so much because it was a really catchy song (I do still think that), not really anything to do with the segment itself compared to Fantasia

Like most people, this era is my least favourite, but I appreciate that you give credit to Disney and it’s team give for finding a way to keep making films during this difficult time. A major strike and a war are enough elements to send a company to bankruptcy, so kudos for their effort and enduring till the fifties. I haven't watched all the films, so my ranking would go as: 1) Ichabod+Mr Toad 2) Fun and fancy free: only because the Mickey short is my favourite of the era, but the rest of the film is average. I grew up with the Latin american VHS and, fun fact, those versions sold the Bongo and Mickey short separately, sparing us from the weird ventriloquist scene, lol. 3) The three caballeros

It's my favorite movie from this era and as an adult, I still love pretty much everything about it. The only other movie I've seen in this era is Ichabod and Mr. Toad which I do enjoy but not as much as Fun and Fancy Free. Wind in the Willows is definitely my favorite story though in this film.

So, I'm apparently an outlier, as The Package Film/Wartime Era is actually one of my favorite eras of the Disney Animated Canon. I really appreciate the variety in general, and some of the animation is absolutely stunning. On to my ranking of all 6 films. #6. Saludos Amigos - While I like all these films, this is easily my least favorite of the era, given its short runtime and the fact that's it's the least interesting presentation as well. I'm also not a big fan of the Pedro segment, which feels very clichéd, plus Disney did this type of storyline better with the Pluto cartoon short Mail Dog. The other 3 segments here are much better, with the final segment definitely being my favorite and a good way to end the film. While the other package films are much better to me, this is still a decent start to the era. #5. The Three Caballeros - This is much better than Saludos Amigos to me, as it's far more creative and energetic overall. I didn't care for it much when I saw it in my childhood, mostly because my siblings and I were expecting a very different kind of movie, but I like it a lot better now that I'm older. The trippy visuals really stand out, and there are some very memorable moments to be found, such as the first gift with the projector, the titular song, and many other enjoyable musical sequences. While I agree that it's weird how Donald Duck goes crazy over human women, the main sequence there is so creative with its visuals, that I still get a lot of enjoyment from it. I kind of need to be in the right mood for this particular movie, but I do enjoy it overall. #4. Fun And Fancy Free - This film admittedly varies in quality, as the first half is nowhere near as memorable as the second half, but I do have nostalgia for the stuff I do really like. The initial framing device works for me, but the Bongo segment does leave a lot to be desired. It's very well animated but not well paced, and Dinah Shore is kind of overacting with her narrating as opposed to her singing. Still, this has some decent moments, but it's nothing compared to what comes after it. Mickey And The Beanstalk is far better, even if it also has a few moments of odd pacing, but it's enjoyable overall. I must be one of the only fans that actually really likes the framing device with Edgar Bergen along with his ventriloquist dummies Charlie and Mortimer, as the absolute bizarreness of it all along with some genuinely funny humor does stand out to me. It's something else I like much more now compared to in my childhood. So while the first half is just okay, the second half really does make the movie for me. #3. Make Mine Music - Out of all the package films, this feels the most varied, although I can see why some would consider it disjointed. Most of the segments work well, such as Peter And The Wolf, which I actually saw on its own separate vhs in my childhood, as well as Casey At The Bat, After You've Gone, The Whale Who Wanted To Sing At The Met, and others. Honestly, Johnny Fedora And Alice Bluebonnet is the weakest segment for me. While I like this movie well, I really hate how disrespectful Disney is to it nowadays, with the removal of The Martins And The Coys and especially how this still isn't on Disney+. It really deserves to be widely available and in its original uncut form. #2. The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad - As far as the two-shorts-in-one format goes, this is definitely an overall improvement over Fun And Fancy Free. I may prefer the framing device from that film, but both shorts work very well here. I'd say that The Wind In The Willows is my favorite over the two, as it has a lot of energy and a very enjoyable climax. The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow does have some odd pacing in places, but it's still a memorable story, and things definitely pick up at the Halloween party and onwards, and the climax is the big highlight. Overall, this makes for a very entertaining film. #1. Melody Time - This is by far my favorite of the package films, as the variety here makes for a really memorable film. Bumble Boogie, The Legend Of Johnny Appleseed, Trees, and Pecos Bill are definitely the biggest standouts to me, but the other segments also compliment the film well. Even though Little Toot is easily my least favorite segment, it still works fine for what it is. This movie stands out to me so much, that it actually makes my top 5 in my ranking of the Disney Animated Canon. I'm that big of a fan of it. Overall, I really appreciate this era of Disney. It may not be especially popular, but I find so much to enjoy here. Yeah, I hate how disrespectful the company has and can be to it, regarding censorship and not making the films as widely available as they deserve to be, but this era is honestly one of my absolute favorites from Disney. I know many don't feel as passionate about it as me, but it really does click with me.

Honestly, I remember loving the Once Upon a Wintertime segment from Melody Time, that I legit used to ship Joe and Jenny (the skater couple who were unnamed when the movie was first released) as a kid. I knew that they were an adorable couple because I'm a huge sucker for romance. It's cute, I love it. And apparently, this segment is one of the more popular ones as it had a Little Golden Book, a Christmas ornament in 2016, a couple of pins that you can get at Walt Disney World, and a snippet of the short was shown in Wonderful World of Animation at Disney Hollywood Studios. The short was also included on the 1981 VHS "A Walt Disney Christmas", and the 1982 TV special, "A Disney Christmas Gift" and "A Disney Channel Christmas" in the following year. Apparently the 80's were the time when Joe and Jenny had somewhat gotten popular.

You see the evolution of Disney most clearly in these movies. Most of the short segments are bland, pleasant little crowd-pleasers, but here and there you see an occasional stab at artsiness or surrealism, but not with the kind of passion you saw in Pinocchio, Fantasia or Bambi. You can really see the Business Disney winning over the Artistic Disney, and in Fun & Fancy Free you see it complete with Jiminy shaking his head at heavy books of literature and rejecting highbrow classical music. There's the new Disney - no more claims to high artistry, no more serious subject matter, no more experimenting or pushing boundaries - from now on we just make gentle, family-friendly entertainment.

6. Make Mine Music. Had to get this from my local library and watch "The Martins and the Coys" on RU-vid. Nothing too special, although "Peter and the Wolf" is one of my favorites from this film, if not the whole Package Era. The cruel ending kept me from liking "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met". 5. Melody Time. Another mixed bag, although it has more memorable content. Gotta love "Once Upon a Wintertime" for its action and drama. "Blame it on the Samba" has an infectious dance beat inside the segment and out. The retelling of "Pecos Bill" with Roy Rogers singing is also worth looking at. 4. Fun and Fancy Free. Dinah Shore gives off good narration and songs for "Bongo", but the story is otherwise uncompelling. "Mickey and the Beanstalk" is unquestionably the better segment. Special mention goes to the beginning where Donald Duck loses his mind while starving. Edgar Bergen and his puppets provide some funny moments with their commentary, as kind of a precursor for MST3K. 3. Saludos Amigos. Here for the two Donald Duck segments and "El Gaucho Goofy", but "Pedro" doesn't round it out too well. Goofy adapting to gaucho life includes some good moments. "Aquarela do Brasil" has some friendly interaction between Jose and Donald even if it is short. 2. The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. Both these segments are good, so they maybe could have worked as full-length films. With this being the final film, the animation is a marked improvement. Case in point, the storming of Toad Hall in "The Wind in the Willows" and the cemetery sequence (especially Ichabod and Gunpowder's facial expressions) in "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow". 1. The Three Caballeros. Enjoyment of this film depends on whether Donald Duck will keep you entertained for over an hour. It builds on where Saludos Amigos left off, introducing Panchito and giving Jose more characterization. Growing up with this movie, I learned a lot about Central/South American culture and biodiversity. The live action/animation in Baia looks relatively advanced for its time.

A lot of these movies I haven't ever seen actually, mostly because well my parents never showed them to me. But there is one movie in the War Time era that I absolutely love and I watch it every year with my parents and that was The Adventures Of Ichabad and Mr Toad. Every year my family watches this one around Halloween so I have a little bit of a personal bias of it all. But it's a section of short films that both of them I really love. I love watching the adventures of Mr Toad (Cyril is legitmately one of my favorite Disney side characters I can't tell you how many times I've referenced his "I thought you would know that govenor to my parents). Mr. Toad's Wild Ride is honestly probably my favorite dark ride at Disneyland other than Snow White. It's just such a fun ride with a great concept and idea behind it. Icahbad is also a family running joke where we'll try to imitate Bing Crosby's singing in the short, we have a lot of Disney references that run their course in my family. But this short is also one that I deeply love for it's atmpsphere, music (I legit love the Headless Horseman song it's a jam), and mocking Ichabad in our own way.

I'm really enjoying this journey through the Disney canon! As an animator myself, I do have one small pet peeve that I feel I should mention: when discussing things like Mary Blair's style or design, you tend to say it's an example of "good animation" - it should be an example of good style direction or even good color choice, art style, composition, etc. Good animation refers to the animation itself....which is down to the animators. Mary Blair made the concepts and background paintings for the shorts. Choosing and rendering the colors and making a great composition is a skill separate from knowing how to animate the characters with acting beats, charm, appeal, and solid principles. I find this is something that a LOT of animation reviewers do and it always bugs the nerdy animation part of me :B Thanks again for making these videos! They are highly entertaining and make me feel warm, fuzzy, and nostalgic!

Maybe you left it out because so much of it is live action. I find VTAP pretty fascinating because it lays out the logistical problems faced by those planning the conquest of Japan. Make Mine Music (3.625/10) I had four categories (story, characters, enjoyment, and aesthetics) and rate each out of 10, then divide by 4. The Headless Horsemen section, especially the lead up to the reveal, is my favorite in the whole era, from the story to the end. Ning Crosby is an excellent narrator as well. Nr. Toad didn't bore me, so it's above most of these shorts. Mickey and the Beanstalk and the birthday party are funny to me so I enjoy it. I just view them as a precursor to Jeff Dunham. Bongo was meh. The Three Caballeros has a certain nostalgia with the ride at WDW in Epcot, so that carries it for me. Jose Carioca is just a fun character for me, same with Panchito. Melody Time is fine, as Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill are good ones while the others are just pretty animation. Saludos Amigos is just poor stories for me and not funny enough outside of Gaucho Goofy. MAke Mine Music was just boring outside of Willie the Whale and I was upset they killed him.

*Just someone watching the animated canon to rank the films* 6) Saludos Amigos Where do I even get started on how much I hate this film. First of all... it's 43 minutes. It shouldn't even be a movie. Also looking at this film, they even failed to portray the culture accurately, and replace it with gags. There's no reason for me to watch this r🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵ed mess besides the final segment... MAYBE 🤔 Score: 3.1/10 5) Make Mine Music 2 things that don't mix together are Disney and adult humor. This movie thought it'd be a good idea to mix those 2. None of the shorts here are rememberable and really oversaturated its welcome. Martin and the Coys is just a mess, and had mass gun use, and even domestic violence at the end. Blue Bayou bores me. Whatever the jazz segment was called was nice.... until the scene where they make that one woman's butt non-curvy *MY EYES* 😫😫. I could talk about all the others, but I won't. Score: 3.25/10 4) Fun And Fancy Free The most forgettable. The 2 shorts in this film pretty much are uninteresting. Bongo is just a circus bear wanting to be free and adapt to the forest. A lot is just bland, and don't even get me started on how stupid that slap song was. Mickey and the Beanstalk could've been enjoyable, but these 2 prick-ass and dumb-ass mannequins just ruin it. Overall, just stay away from this movie. Score: 3.4/10 3) Melody Time There are 7 shorts and only 3 were good. Once Upon A Wintertime is just mid, but the art style is nice. Bumble Boogie is a really nice bop. Johnny Appleseed shows a very nice tone to American history. Little Toot is uninteresting and stupid. Trees........ no. Blame It On The Samba is my favorite, due to its music, tone change, and just for what it was supposed to be (the 3rd South America film that never happened). Unfortunately I don't like Pecos Bill here. That's all I gotta say. I didn't like it, but it ain't that bad. Score: 4.15/10 2) The Adventures Of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. It's alright. Both of the shorts in this film are pretty enjoyable and have their ups and downs. Wind in the Willows is the one I like better, but I really love the climax in The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow. Not much to say, but this is an enjoyable experience for some part. Score: 5.18/10 1) The Three Caballeros I actually like this so bad it's hilarious film. Its randomness isn't really much of a complaint here. Seeing Jose again was a pleasure. I get the hype of the creature, and Punchito is just as good. A film that didn't need much structure, but just needed to be very entertaining. I don't f🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵ing care above Horny Donald, but it's just too funny to not talk about. Overall, I movie that I could rewatch every few months. Score: 7.11/10
