The House of Commons became disorderly after a motion was made by the Leader of the House, Sir Geoffrey Howe regarding actions by Dale Campbell-Savours during a Committee Hearing earlier in the day. Campbell-Savours disregarded the authority of the Committee Chair, Janet Fookes who brought the matter to the Floor of the House. The motion by Howe would have gave Committee Chairs the authority to suspend Members directly instead of taking the matter to the full House for a vote. The motion was debatable and several senior and well known Members took part in the debate including Michael Foot, Kenneth Clarke, Alan Beith, and Dennis Skinner. After no progress was made, the Speaker, Bernard Weatherill suspended the sitting for 15 minutes for the parties to discuss the matter informally and a decision was reached where a vote on the motion was not needed.
