The fact that the SNP only has 3 supply days during a session and the speaker decides to torpedo that after a chat with Keir Starmer is despicable

The SNP walked out of the chamber, but the debate had already come to a close. They walked out during the Deputy Speakers speech outlining why their particular vote would not be heard. But according to one SNP MP they did still vote on the Labour amendment in the voting booths after walking out because they felt they had no choice. And that's exactly the point, because they weren't given a choice. Yesterday was one of 3 days out of the Parliament season where SNP get a chance to put forward their own motions for a vote, Labour get something like 18 of these days, SNP get 3. Normally other opposition parties cannot add amendments on these days, because they have their own days to put forward motions. Labour were in an uncomfortable position having ot either side with Government or support the SNP. And the speaker's decision to allow Labour motion effectively gave Labour a way out, otherwise Starmer may have faced massive rebellion because its not clear if he would have allowed his MPs to vote for SNP ceasefire and condemnation of Israel. The Speaker is normally re-elected after a General election so the theory is that Labour privately put pressure on him to allow their motion to go through on an SNP day, or he would lose his place after a massive Labour landslide election. So, yes its all very trivial and petty in the face of Gaza crisis, and it is really sad its come to this. But, it also raises questions of speaker impartiality and fair process in the House of Commons. Debate in our form doesn't work unless the speaker is neutral.

One massive problem that everyone seems to be overlooking in this discussion - the original SNP motion included a call for ‘an end to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people’. Now, the problem is that ‘collective punishment’ is not just a casual descriptive - it is a specific legal term used in Article 33 of the Geneva Convention, and for the UK parliament to put forward a statement accusing Israel of collective punishment would be completely unprecedented by current UK legal opinions. Yes, it may be obvious to all of us that what is currently happening in Gaza is a collective punishment, but that doesn’t mean that parliament can make that kind of statement without legal backing - in fact, it’s such a huge departure from the current positions of the main UK political parties on the Gaza conflict that I personally find it hard to believe that the SNP didn’t expect either Labour or the Tories to table an amendment to remove this wording! Lastly - the wording of the Labour amendment called for everything that the SNP motion did, and also called for the immediate cessation of the annexation and settlement of Palestinian land both in Gaza and the West Bank, all without including accusations of unproven war crimes! So, why the SNP chose to leave the chamber in protest against their bill not being voted on (which, I’ll add, would never have been voted on once a preceding amendment was approved, which as I’ve outlined above was a near certainty due to their own wording) instead of voting for an amendment that gave them everything they were asking for plus more…. I’ll leave that for you to consider. My opinion? The SNP just did Westminster up like a kipper, and will be laughing all the way to Holyrood as their support on both the general election and any future independence referendum goes through the roof.

As an American, I actually find this level of self-reflection and autopsy being done on the floor of the House to be incredibly refreshing. This level of inquiry and holding presiding officers accountable in open session on the basis of rules, precedent and procedure - as compared to the purely political fiasco that was the ouster of U.S. House Speaker McCarthy - is actually healthy, in my view. I also find Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg to be at his best when he valiantly rises in defense of the procedures of the House, with historical perspective and aplomb.

Nonsense, he was protecting Kier's complicity from scrutiny. By denying a proper hearing on the Gaza issue he will only strengthen people's desire to hold politicians to account publicly and further understand trust in politics in general. Corruption in a red tie is still corruption.

Parliamentary democracy in the UK has failed, and why are they wasting time on the middle east. We in the UK are in a desperate way and all time should be spent dealing with it, we are over two trillion in debt with the NAT. debt. with a green agenda that will double that debt, before we have net zero. We have serious run away cost of living, power in orbit, seems we have it all wrong. Our pensions are a long way below Spain, Belgium, and many more, with standard pension at £800 per month. Spain is app. 2500 euros PM. UK is twentieth in the list of all countries, and we are told we are the richest, we should receive aid not give aid.
