Dispelling SHTF Prepper Combat Myths

Today on Bear Interdependent we're dispelling SHTF prepper combat myths. We're discussing classics like "is Condor gear airsoft gear?" and "how many magazines" and "what kind of carbine should I own for SHTF". These are actually vitally important questions for SHTF WROL TEOTWAWKI and all preppers- city prepper, urban prepper, doomsday prepper, suburban prepper, homesteader, militia, minuteman- everyone needs to know the answers to these questions.
We look at the Condor MOPC plate carrier, the DPMS Oracle 5.56mm rifle, and the Magpul PMAG. These are all part of the SHTF combat loadout, and that's why we are dispelling these SHTF prepper combat myths. The Prepper combat loadout is important to the militia and minuteman, doomsday preppers, homesteaders, and anyone else looking to survive SHTF WROL TEOTWAWKI. The Condor MOPC plate carrier has served me well over the past 4 years, and is still very dependable. The DPMS rifle is one of many rifles we own, but this particular rifle has over 4,000 rounds through it with no failures. And of course Magpul PMAGS are the industry standard rifle magazines.
As we're dispelling SHTF Prepper Combat Myths, I think preppers will get their combat loadout for SHTF WROL TEOTWAWKI more squared away. The prepper combat loadout aka SHTF combat loadout is highly personal, but something that should be defined NOW and practiced with NOW while we still have the option before civil war, economic collapse, civil unrest, zombie apocalypse, martial law, etc. The Condor MOPC has been a great piece of kit, as has the DPMS Oracle 5.56 rifle, and again, the Magpul PMAGs are industry standard.

The thing about claiming that “Condor is Airsoft gear”, like its a negative thing, is that most Airsofters run their gear harder than most “preppers”.
@countryheathen1834
@countryheathen1834 4 года назад
what's also funny is that most airsofters play in the expensive equipment that the "preppers" want to have. those that play airsoft pay for there toys about the same for a inexpensive rifle or Springfield XD, glock. those gas blow back toy guns arnt cheap. what airsofters put in to go play commando ranger seal for a day I would kill to have to go buy real shit to go train with, use to by more essential items to put away for stock.

If the Sh** ever really hits the fan, there will be PLENTY of high-dollar gear laying on the ground, on the bodies of people who spent more time & $$$ on gear than they did on training. Pick it up & drive on. AATW !

In 2004 " Fallujah Iraq " We started each assault with ten full mags on every Marine, several times I was down to my last magazine or out before resupply. After the first day I made sure if anyone wanted more than ten mags they were available. " not bragging "but I am pretty sure you could count over 100 loaded magazines in and around my property. I don't keep all my guns in the main safe either , two quick access handgun safes front and rear of the house . one instant thumbprint safe center. And I cached two rifle, two pistols and a Fallujah ammo supply on the property where I can't be observed recovering it. Never know , might have to retake the house. No , I'm not paranoid , I have been to 34 countries on four continents and I know what any man is capable of if he is desperate.

@@christopherbrownlee4768 I forgot to count the bandolier but I must not have the right ones as I can only fit 20 rd mags in them or boxes or stripper clips. I don't forget some wrapped in the ruck in a way to not clang but also bags, pouches , ammo cans....no resupply and if I find any caches or battlefield drops I'm going to be wary. Any battle packs or "loose ammo" aren't going to load themselves so I want enough mags but load the ones in "storage" a little light just in case the spring issue is real. I've only experienced one with a shot spring but I had forgotten it full with all 30 rounds and over 25 years like that and the mag was probably definitely 40+ years old now. I don't trust that mag anymore.

From what I understand, Airsoft puts lots of stress on gear. There are still sticks and thorns for it to get torn by, weight and load that it needs to stand up to, and fit standard equipment. Unless you are operating, intense airsoft seems like a good way to test it out

Great video! When I was in Iraq, our standard loadout was 240 rounds, 8 mags. Creature of habit I am, that's how I keep my stuff setup. @DaveSmith-cp5kj
@DaveSmith-cp5kj 4 года назад
I've had the same problem with the straps. Check it and you may see some unraveling of the webbing at the top. If you sew it back down it should make the pack feel balanced again. They stitched the straps well so they are unlikely to fall apart on you, but they do unravel until you repair it the first time, since they made like several rows of continuous stitching rather than several independent stitches.

Now I can start replacing lower quality stuff with better stuff as time goes on, but if SHTF now, at least I’ve got something, even if it will only last a few weeks or months. I’ve got the exact same DPMS. Bought it on sale at Sportsman’s a few years ago and I freakin’ love it! I’ve only put about 1500 rounds through her, but like your rifle, not a single failure to fire or extract. Not one. I do field strip and clean it the same night I shoot it, without fail though. I guess that carried over from the Army lol. Have you checked out the Meprolight RDS? I picked one up and think it’s the best bang for the buck at $300-$450. As good as any in the $1000 range and far superior to anything cheaper that I’ve seen or heard of. That was one of my upgrades from the $50 fire field RDS I bought with the DPMS. I also picked up the magpul pro flip up sights which are exquisite. Those were a compulsive overspend, but a lot of it can be. It’s also a lot of fun! Also, thanks for bringing up size. You are absolutely right. It does make sense to keep body size in mind when thinking about how much weight to carry over distance. You’ve mentioned it many times in this and other videos and I would agree also that training is super important. If you’re small like me, it’s especially important to be in great shape and do a lot of road marching or hiking with a pack. If you train hard enough and are bad ass enough, you can carry as much (and sometimes more) than your larger peers. I proved this as an infantry medic in that I regularly found myself carrying a medium ruck that weighed 60lbs, plus a Charlie bag of medical gear and supplies (splints, bandages, IV bags, sterile water, drugs, scissors, stethoscope, BP cuff etc.) weighing in at 45lbs, plus an M-16, plus a .45ACP, heading up never ending switchbacks while pushing all the crybaby’s to drink water and keep up with the platoon. In one of my first experiences like that, a new transfer from the 101st wasn’t living up to his old unit’s reputation. In his defense they had assigned him to be the M-60 gunner, but he wasn’t keeping up. Eventually I started carrying his 60 for him, but it still wasn’t enough. A mile or two later he crashed to the ground in a thunder of Kevlar and aluminum hitting logs. He was in his early 20’s, at least 6’ tall and 190lbs. Me... 17 years old, 5’4 and 130lbs at the time. Not quite so lean and mean 30 years later, but I still try lol.

Very good content T Condor was my main rig while playing semi-pro Airsoft for 5 years and that same rig has now been converted into a Real Steel rig that plate carrier has been submerged in swamp water and rolled through the mud multiple times because I played hard during our Mil-Sims and now train hard as hell with that same rig so Condor is very well built. Period I also run a PSA upper and lower the only thing I don't like about the DPMS is the gas block and key you have to watch that they are staked and pinned properly otherwise a good firearm

I've had zero malfunctions through my first PSA build through about 3k rounds of 5.56, and I've also shot close to 7K with a .22lr bolt insert. No issues other than the .22 ammo being dirty. 5.56 still runs fine even when the gun is full of .22 gunk. Used the money I saved on that rig for ammo and a decent sight. I beat the gun up constantly, no issues. I don't care what anyone says, as long as you have a halfway decent barrel and bolt, the gun will run just fine. Save your money and use it to gain proficiency. You did a great job explaining this. Thank you for this video! Also, many people don't realize this, but the "carbon" that enters a DI system actually works as a sort of dry lubricant. Yes, ARs should be cleaned occasionally (mostly just to inspect for wear) but the guns run just fine when dirty. At least in my experience.

I have had good and bad condor gear. Working as a securoty contractor in Astan for 6 years I had the opportunity to torture test quite a few things. I personally had a condor vest fall apart on me after only 2 months of shtf style use with daily wear and multiple don/doffs a day. That is terrible. On the flip side I still have a condor recon chest rig that still looks brand spanking new, along with multiple mag pouches that have served without complaint for years without damage. Another fun fact is that I picked up a pair of tru-spec 24/7 in 2011 that I am STILL wearing today that went all over hell and back with me while I could get maybe a year or two out of those 5.11's they kept issuing me. Talk about an unpopular opinion, people hate hearing that one.

In a former lifetime as a part-time LEO in a small southern town I had to supply ALL of my gear, even my patrol rifle. I had NO problems or concerns with my Bushmaster M-forgery and mil-surplus mags. As for other gear, my current 782 gear is a mix of very early Blackhawk, Tactical Tailor, Condor and mil-surplus. It works very well and has zero issues after almost 20 years. My EDC belt us a 15 year old Condor Instructor's belt. The velco tab is a but fuzzy, but it still supports whatever I happen to be carrying. BTW, my wife's main AR is a lightly modified DPMS Oracle that she's had since 2013. She ran it through a Carbine Course a few years ago with zero issues.

One thing Bear is correct about is his statement “run what works for you.” I listen to several RU-vid prep/gun channels and they all have their opinions; similar, but different. I listen for ideas, opinions and their take on things. I don’t always agree, but it always gives me something to think about. Having a military background; unless you have been in combat or any operation that combat is a possibility; doesn’t mean squat. They have motor pool, supply, mess, etc personal, who have zero combat experience and only do enough to qualify. I wouldn’t trust their load out advice, unless they train and say what Bear says “this is my load out, run what works for you.” I have a friend, I talk to infrequently; retired navy, broke his leg/had to ring out 2 weeks before completion (actual SEAL friend corroborated his story), works private, actually does operations; who says the same thing all the time; “run what works for you.” So, does everyone on their team. Train until your gear becomes an extension of you. If Bear trains, I’ll listen to his comments/rants. My friends helped me build my kit. My AR cost $750; complete. Started with NcStar, moved up to Condor; still have the NcStar stuff; not great, but it was cheap. My friends told me the points to re-enforce. I train as much as I can afford to spend; I don’t have volumes of land. One thing I can say is I’m deadly with my rig; steel target, room clearing, tactical/no one shooting back deadly. I train with my rig and “it works for me”. I hope if SHTF I don’t freeze; if I don’t, I have faith in my training. I will win my fire fights.

I don't ever remember running dry. I was even able to hand one of the SAW gunners two mags one time. I was an 0352 I bet the 0311's ran dry quickly too. If I was on a limited budget I would get a Smith & Wesson m&p 15. I got nothing against the colt but honestly I don't see how they're any better quality than a Smith & Wesson or DPMS. I'd save the extra money and spend it on ammo and magazines and spare parts and be perfectly happy. This is coming from a guy who has not one, but two $5,000 ARs. Heck, The rifle I tote around the most is a 20 inch BCM with open sights and M16 carry handle that I paid $400 for. Anymore these days if it's from a reputable manufacturer you're not going to have any problems so long as it was put together right. Personally I do avoid Condor gear when I can. The velcro they use just never seems to last that long and sometimes the stitches run. but you can just put some new stitches in it and it be fine. Cordura is cordura in my experience. I just keep a handy stitcher and Kevlar thread with me for repairs. All gear eventually fails.

New sub so I'm sorry for the late comment. Just a couple things because I love your stuff. As a military medic myself, I agree with most of the stuff you are saying. However, just because a rifle has an "ammo issue" does not mean that it is solely the ammunition as the issue. I've had plenty of weapons that solely work with specific ammo and are picky. Secondly, as someone that has seen combat, I would say that I agree with the ammo and fitness bits. I would like to comment that your gear is mostly as good as you make them. I've worked with Condor and Palmetto plenty and they are well rounded, as long as you take care of the equipment. I know you wanted to hear from Bear but since no one else has spoken here I thought I'd offer my 2 cents. No expert by any means but just ask yourself what environments you are likely to find yourself in the most, where you would also have your rifle that is? This is going to vary from person to person, but most of us are going to be either unarmed, or at least no rifle, in urban areas during the initial bug-out post apocalyptic period. So IOW, consider where you live (neighborhood) and wherever you may go from there. Assuming your guns and gear are stored at home that is. Then how far will you be able to spot, or be spotted, a threat and engage them in those environments? I know we might be able to see someone from 1000 meters but are we going to actually engage them, or take fire from them at that distance? I think not. Now in the earlier described urban areas where you may have a pistol on you, you need to consider that this is still likely to be similar to actual shootings on record today. Anywhere from right on top of you out to maybe 40 or 50 feet is where most violent encounters are likely to occur in such an environment. The majority of shootings take place at the closest of those distances, and decrease relatively so consistent with the distance. So, IOW, the further away, the less likely. So better to be good up close and able to grapple and retain your weapon than to just get good at shooting small things at 25 yards. Same principle is true for your long guns. Better to be good at turning corners with that thing and not flagging or exposing yourself in windows and such than to be sniper school ready but slow AF when ambushed. It is better to be well drilled on reaction to fire and assessing the battlefield than to be super fast at reloads and fancy John Wick moves but not ready to do any of that at the drop of a hat. Again, just my thoughts, but I got these ideas from people that are alive because of this, and some of them teach others this stuff for a living now.

The best thing about the AR-15 platform, is that you can get into a rifle for sub 600, and as you save and learn and train you can upgrade EVERY> SINGLE>PIECE of it and still come out under 1000. it can be tailored to you. A few questions:1. How much water are you carrying? you have what appears to be a 3 liter camelback on, but 3 liters is not enough water to sustain a fight, or a movement to contact, or any operation that would require fighting and moving over any distance or time. Fighting is inherently physical. your ruck could have more, but you already have a pack on your back so it doesn't seem like you'll be using a ruck. 2. What does your physical fitness program look like? You are carrying 13 pounds in 5.56 ammo alone. Add some pistol mags, a pistol, your rifle, the various tools (like knives, leatherman, etc) that you are probably carrying, and you have around 25 pounds of weaponry on your person. your plate carrier weighs somewhere around 3 pounds, plus another 8ish with the plates. you've got somewhere around 35 pounds of gear on without anything to sustain you. I didn't even include your medical equipment or a rucksack. That is flat out too much weight. The military does it every day, its true, but we also live on 2 1400 Calorie MREs a day, and have entire battalions whose sole purpose is to sustain combat operations. you will not have this luxury in SHTF. Once again, unless you plan on sitting on your porch with all that on, you will be exhausted once you start a sustained fight. 3. What is your mission set? This equipment is for combat operations only. To me, that says "aggressive". I totally understand if your intent is to just patrol your compound and fight bad guys looking to steal your stuff, but how realistic is that mission set? You aren't scavenging/looting abandoned buildings in this setup for reasons I've already stated, so you are carrying all this with the sole intent to get in a gunfight. Unless people are attacking you, the only other reason to have this is so you can attack someone else. If you have answers to these questions I am all ears. P.S., H in the phonetic alphabet is pronounced "hotel", not "helo"

Myth: your rifle is just as good as a DD or Colt. Fact: you can’t run more than a 1/4 mile without passing out and likely having a heart attack too.

I go by what Clint from Thunder Ranch said; guys will slowly start removing mags during patrol because it's heavy until they're at 3-4 mags and once they get into a firefight, they're back at 10 mags the following day lol.

I've been in 3 fire fights in my 51 years on Earth. Two stopped in ten rounds. The other was 750 rounds 5.56 plus the 100rds 9mm I had stoked. You can never have too much ammo

Your keyword stuffing in the description makes me smile and think back to the good old days of 1993. Loving the videos. New sub. Thanks!
