Ok, boys and girls- the ultimate pee-pee measuring contest- 5.56mm versus 7.62x39mm versus 7.62x51mm. Here's a discussion on the merits of each round for SHTF WROL TEOTWAWKI. I could tell you in this description which round I like more- the 5.56mm (.223 Remington ish), the 7.62x39mm (AK47, SKS ammo) or the 7.62x51mm (.308 Winchester ish) but you can just watch the video instead!
The key to understand is that in SHTF TEOTWAWKI WROL there IS NO RESUPPLY. This is a foundational concept to this channel- you are your own resupply. therefore you need to take measures to make sure you have all the things including enough ammo. This is especially important for a minuteman loadout, a martial law situation, or even during an economic collapse.
Your loadout needs to be as squared away as possible, whether that's your AR15, AR10, AK47, SKS- whatever- just make sure that your minuteman loadout has *all the things*. I truly believe it is only a matter of time before we have to do Militia stuff and/or there's martial law because of an economic collapse or civil war- our own north American SHTF WROL TEOTWAWKI.

In Vietnam I carried 23 magazines for my M-16 and for a few months I carried a fourth bandolier of 7 extra magazines. But the one time I was in a firefight I used up all three bandoliers of ammo, i.e. 23 magazines and that was on an overnight O/P Observation Post squad size patrol. the firefight lasted from 6a in the morning til 12 noon. The lesson learned is that you should carry as much ammo as you are able to hump even if it kicks your ass everyday of the week. I also had 8 fragmentation grenades with me as well as a claymore mine and I used up everything. Also used up my smoke grenades to mark our location for air strikes and helicopter gunships to make strafing runs.The reason for the 8 frags was that one member of the squad had less than 30 days to go incountry and he was allowed to stay with the rest of the company and not go out on a squad size patrol which was dangerous. @@Scorpio-tn4vy He had to use that much ammo because 556 didn’t do well with brush, a thick thick knocks 556 off it’s course, you get a lot of misses that way, in Afghanistan our troops experienced the same thing but they also had better optics to get clearer shots so not quite as bad, 308 isn’t getting pushed aside by twigs, just saying.

Tea & Empire In reality, Japanese lives were saved because of the atomic bombs. There was already over 300,000 killed in the carpet bombing of Japan and that was just in the attempt to destroy manufacturing. If it had come to an invasion of the mainland the bombing before the landings would've been massive, probably killing millions before the first craft ever came ashore. During the island hopping, the Japanese losses were on average 10 times of the Americans losses. The US expected about a million casualties to take the mainland. With all of the Japanese civilians in close proximity, it's hard to imagine what it would've been like.

I am ok carrying my AR outside. I practiced some indoor room clearing drills, and was surprised how quickly my arms got tired holding the rifle up at the ready. For those who havent practiced holding a rifle at ready for several minutes nonstop, they might want to try it. I took some of the fancy accessories off immediately afterwards.

Prepper Dreams one of the reasons short „cqb“ uppers exist. Inside a building you don’t need the extra power of a long barrel and a 11.5 is easier (and this means longer) to hold up than the longer ones
@basti080891
@basti080891 5 лет назад
@bali song the difference between 11.5 and 14.5 in muzzle blast and noise is there, but its not that big that the 14.5 would be pleasant to shoot indoors either, I have both. But I agree, either a suppressor or hearing protection is strongly advised with every ar!
@jay8557
@jay8557 5 лет назад
Silencers are not very silent, unless shooting out of a .22lr. Indoors, a silencer out of a 5.56, is loud as hell, and ear protection, would still be required. In a real shtf scenerio, take that damn thing off, and throw it in the trash. Just another unnecessary item, people put on, to look cool.
@basti080891
@basti080891 5 лет назад
@@jay8557 I resprect your opinion, but I disagree. It matters if the shot indoors is 136dB (my 14.5 messured with a ase utra cqb thread on in a 4 meter diameter shooting tube) or 162dB (without the suppressor and instead a bcm comp) for your hearing, the one makes permanent damage, the other doesn't. When hunting I see the big difference. When there is more than one animal, the one shot drops and the other ones are many times confused instead of fleeing instantly. You gave a great answer to a very tough question. You folks are so fortunate to have a 2nd amendment. "Assualt" rifles are near impossible to get in South Africa. My dad fought terrorists with a R1 (FN-FAL) in 7.62 nato. In their theater they needed to out range the enemy on very flat terrain. (Hence shoot through a tree and hit the terrorist at 800 meters reliably). The R4 (galil) in 5.56 nato was issued later in the 80s. Much love from SA.

I've been running an SKS 7.62x39. got it for next to nothing, and being broke, it worked. All my "guys" now run 5.56. Odd man out, in more ways than one. And the "duckbill" mags, well..... We had the commonality of caliber conversation. Made a deal with a Brother for one of his "extra" guns in 5.56 so we're all on the same page now. I'm keeping the SKS, 1000 rds and load out for "someone who might show up".

AR15 platform in Canada is under lrgal restrictions. Easier and cheaper to train up here with Combloc arms and ammo. And SKS can be had for $250, and 1500 rounds of Commie surplus ammo can be had for $300. So for the price of an AR15 in the USA we have a rifle and a pissload of ammo... And yes, we still train with the Mattel (🤣) rifles, but only frequently enough to stay fresh. The Combloc stuff is our bread and butter. We are also a nation of game hunters, and you'd be hard pressed to find a Canadian country boy who can't cloverleaf with his rifle of choice at whatever range he has to. Shotguns? Weeooo! We also shotgun like we were born with em in our paws.

I know what your saying about ammo, biggest thing can the dip behind the trigger hit anything and constantly? I have respect for the AK47, that said I have a few akm's myself. good rifle. still say it's the man behind the trigger. You can hunt a lot of small game with 22 without making a lot of noise and attracting people to your location. The 12ga. Offers a variety of loads to hunt almost anything and their are very few moving parts in a single shot which lessons the chance of something going wrong with it.

I am thinking along different lines. Disclaimer: This is just my layman's perspective. In a collapse going Rambo is not a long term strategy for most people (special forces guys excepted). The best strategy for most is going to be to disappear and avoid groups of roving trouble makers. So what helps one to do that? I see two major assets. The first is the knowledge and skills to make improvised weapons (spears, bows, crossbows, throwing weapons...) and traps. The second is a light simple to maintain 22LR platform and gobs of assorted ammo. By simple to maintain I mean something without removable magaInes to lose or damage and manual action. Bolt, lever, or even single shot are options. 22 short, long, and long rifle are all capable of stealthy anti-personnel use while most small game can be taken with the even quieter and lighter CB caps. But what about a band of armed baddies you may ask. Well chances of coming out of that encounter without serious injury is remote even armed with a military rifle. Avoidance is critical. Now if your approach is to form your own roving band then arming like a Marine unit makes sense but for most of us I don't think that is going to be a practical or effective plan.

This is the first video I’ve seen talking about integrating into a fire team of likeminded individuals and how having the same mags, ammo, and spare parts are important. I have several ars and aks and several thousand rounds of both calibers as well as a high level of training on both platforms so I was having a hard time making up my mind on which i would grab if I had to pick. This helped me make up my mind. Good points, man.

I use a 308 just in general. If you were in a situation like you describe and you survived lone enough to fire a couple magazines of .308 then youll have a 5.56 or several along with ammunition if you want them. Carrying a heavier rifle is not a fantasy. In the real military people patrol with a m240. People have patrolled with 12 lb rifles from the brown bess to the m14.

With magazines that you're going to be designating for your AR team(s) or AK team(s) as spares, have them run those magazines in their rifles to make sure there will be no malfunctions. Just make sure that they're feeding and chambering properly. We train for weapons malfunctions and stoppages in the event that they do happen and they will, but help yourself as well as others mitigate that issue and inspect and test your gear. This should be done with any gear that you're willing to lend out.

Thank you for a good review. FWIW, I walk 5.56 in my ARs, I used to walk 7.62, but no one else had them. So, to be smart about it, I went exclusively to 5.56. Your argument in favor of this is well-founded. All squad members should be armed with the same cartridge.

5.56 (500m effective range) and 7.62x39mm (350m effective range) are essentially outdated with today's polymer ceramic ballistic armour and modern optics (even the latest HD TV camera sights from ATN with their X-sight 4K have ballistic computer calculator compensators and integrated Laser range finders or can be used in complete darkness if commercial Pulsar thermal scope sights are used). 7.62x51 (900m effective range) is the way to go. This is why in Afghanistan US Marine squads were able to be pinned down by WW1 Lee Enfield 303s bolt action rifles with iron sights and needed to call in air strikes and why the British Army had to rush in 7.62x51 designated squad marksman rifles. (which sort of negates the arguments presented here) Modern optics are a game changer.

In regard to the 308/ 7.62nato only disadvantage I see is cost of ammo, If you think a 30 cal is to heavy for patrols you just need to man up a bit. The M1, M14, BAR were carried on patrols, I carried an M60 and a few belts of ammo on patrols for more miles than I can count and never once did it occur to me it weighed too much. There is something to be said for all teams member to carry same equipment in the same manner, But having a heavy weapon in a team/ squad can have some real advantages.

IMO the 7.62x39 AK has a particular use .If post unfortunate reality .Bigger game like deer we’re not hunted out or irradiated .The fact is hunting will increase the risk of your exposure to people behaving badly. If that unfortunate situation arose.The AK provides good continuity of fire quick follow up shots to deal with one or even multiple predators in such a situation .All while still maintaining a modest load out weight ( unlike the 7.62 NATO ) and still providing a proven round for deer .

The "Best" caliber or round is I think the one that you are good at shooting . I have a few AR's and a mini 14 both in 223/556 and can shoot both good , but would not put down the idea of using 22lr as an option , Seen people using 22lr shooting tic tacs at 100 yds , Practice with what you got and can afford , and remember when SHTF you are not going out looking for a fight but will be ready to defend and survive.

Eh, I'ma 762 NATO guy personally. I'm the crazy douche lugging around (literally) 160-180 rounds of 762 in my M1A Scout Squad. Lol BUUUT, I've also got a purpose built rifle too! 18in M1A, SAI synthetic stock, short rail I mounted under the forend for an RVG and TLR-1, bipod lug for my short Harris bulipod in my ruck pack, Arms 18 mount with Primary Arms 1-8x24 LPVO. My entire loadout good for 3 days is around 55+lbs. I use the 1-8x so I have that ability to engage from 5yrds and zoom up to 8x for those long engagements as I'll be providing overwatch when needed. But still retain the full capability to handle targets at room distance. I'm primarily the DM, but need that versatility. And YES, I do train with my setup. I run n gun with it as often as I can. Does it fuckin suck? Hell it fuckin sucks! But it's worth it. Weight vs capability and I've tried my best to meet somewhat in the middle; slight sided capability > weight. If it was the all-out zombie apocalypse where I'm on foot for weeks or months...I wouldn't be choosing this setup. For a WROL SHTF where I'm ina group of "operators" on patrol for a few days and then back inside the wire, it works for those crazy enough to do it Lol Havin your guys carry one mag for you and you carry one mag each for them is sumpin I need to incorporate. Another 5-7lbs is doable when life is at stake! Edit: finally able to up my ammo cap to 290rnds. HEAVY, but will get used to it or die trying Lol

Hey Bear, sounds like solid advice. When ALL the category's of: reliability, longevity, ammo availability, parts availability, Mag availability, standardization, battle proven, cost of all of these and portability are considered for rifle and pistol, AR or AK and Glock or 1911 are the four to choose from for prepping. None are unworthy but some do suit some people and not others. Pick one of each and train with it till you wear it out and regardless of which combination you choose you will be better off than people that spend there time arguing about what someone else spent there money on. I saw a guy hit a 16oz soda bottle at 100 yards with a 44 magnum revolver that didn't even have a rear site on it. TRAIN!

On the topic of 308 - I'm not ex military so take thisfor what its worth, however I am from a long line of hillbillies so I know a bit more about the outdoors than my khakis let on. I love my 308 SCAR 17. Love it. I love shooting it. I love my Tavor X95 as well. Even I, with my lack of military background, would NEVER grab either one over my vanilla AR if SHTF and I gotta run or do something quick. It just doesn't make sense unless I'm alone high on a hilltop or hunkered in my house, and in both cases(at least in the house) Id still have the AR with me. Gotta go for the compatibility of spare parts and rounds. Not as many people are running SCARs and even fewer X95s. As usual, you make nothing but sense.

And if you want to remember U/D clicks on your optic for cheap steel then just do that and click back at the end of the range session, confirm zero and be on your way. You can be all over in terms of Point of impact at various ranges shooting 5 different types of ammo, especially when your going all over in projectile weight as well. "pretty close" is no confirmed zero. You know what im saying, im sure! Good content brother, keep it up.

I have the 556/223, 7.62x39, 300 blackout 22 cal and 17 hmr, and 6.5 grendel. The others in my group also have the same calibers. All are in the AR 15 platform. The reason for the 300 blackout is that everything except the barrel is interchangeable with the 556/223. The 300 has the same basic bolistics of the 7.62x39 AR without needing different mags, Bolt, BCG, barrel, and almost completely different parts setup. Yes, the ammo is more expensive for the 300 blackout. However, it is currently easier to find than the 7.62x39 ammo. Also, the ability to run sub sonic ammo and supper sonic ammo from the same firearm. Yes, the 556/223 does have less bullet drop past 300 yards than the 7.62x39 and 300 blackout. Shot placement is a must with all ammo.

Agreed with one very minor change. It is personal preferance, and also not one of the 3 caibers you listed. Even so I like 6.5 creedmoor over 308/7.62x51 in over watch. One rifle, rather than 2 that can hit at any range a 300 win mag can and my skill level allows. This caliber can be in a ar10 platform so you do not have rifle/mag/caliber switching and all the issues it brings. Yes I know many will disagree, but my preferences, my choice and my responsibility. Last thing, I also like to take walks, but i like to carry my 17 HMR, sidearm, and day pack if i'm going out just to shoot a few rounds and have a bit of fun. Carring weight is rally an issue once you have health issues and use a walking cane as a shooting stick.

Did some research on effectiveness of several different rounds. Then some research on price and availability and was leaning toward 5.56(with some green tips on hand). This video may have further solidified my choice. I feel very drawn to long range shots. I will be looking at some kind of long bolt-action with maybe some Grendels for that. But priorities- SHTF calls for AR first...and fast.

If you’re moving around with 5.56, how many rounds are you going to carry? 600? And the end of your first fire fight, you’re gonna use at least a quarter of that. By the time you start having to hunt for food you’re gonna have like 200 rounds. This is why I will carry 22lr. I can carry 6000 rounds for the same weight at 600 rounds of 556. By the time the person who is fighting you is out of ammo, I still have 2000 rounds. The weapon you have is only as effective as the amount of ammo you have

You've made some very valid points, but I bought an L-1A1 20 years ago for $500 00. While I'd love to purchase an A1 pattern AR, the L-1A1 is the only semiautomatic center fire rifle that I own, so in my case, I'm stuck bringing what I have. I may not be able to patrol with it, but I can stay and look after the base camp, and help improve the defense of it in the process. My lone issue is the choice of ammo. I saw a video a few months ago where someone compared the XM-193 to the M855, and the 1/12 A1 to the 1/7 A2. He found the XM-193 to be the most accurate of the two rounds out of both rifles. He also found that the M-855 keyholed out of the 1/12 barrel.

6.8spc. Stock up and learn to reload for $0.30/rd. You can still hunt and fight with 30-40% more energy than 556 NATO, yet not as heavy as 308. However, if you have to bug out, the chance of ever finding ammo for anything (556 or otherwise) when SHTF is pretty slim. Choose pretty much whatever caliber works for you best. I own both, but if I can only have one, probably the 6.8spc just in case I ever have to haul out and do a lot of hiking in the mountains. Love the 308 though.
