I liked the not so subtle dig at Matt's allergy to putting gas in his vehicles, despite how much time he spends buying gas station food. No idea why some people hate filling up. My dad was like that and I have fond childhood memories of various family trips where we literally coasted into a gas station or ran out on the side of a highway in the middle of nowhere, tens of miles from anything. Even after I grew up, I remember having to take him gas just a few miles from his home.

That wrecker came from a wrecking yard 8 miles from my house, Jack Welsh (Easy Jack) was very well liked in the area. and was a great source of antique cars & parts

I had a 1957 GMC with that same full front end bumpers, bumper-boobs, etc. Mine was the only one I have seen with the full kit until this one here.

By the fender marker lights that should be a 41' panel truck, the 46' had a screw in the top to hold the cover on. The 42' through 45' were all military production. I think.

When you said that nothing in that yard was for sale, it reminded me of something that happened years ago. There was an auto wrecker where I live that had stuff going back to the 1920's. There was one truck in particular that I wanted so I went in to see if I could buy it and he just looked me in the eye and said a very forceful, "NO" and he turned around and walked away. I left wondering what was up with the owner. About two years later I was driving by his lot and they were just setting up a portable car crusher so I went in. I talked to the fellow who was running the show and asked what was going on. He told me that the owner had died and his children who now owned the place wanted every vehicle crushed so they could clean up the lot and sell it. The crusher guy gave me their contact number and I called that evening. I told the son about the truck I wanted and he said he would love to sell it to me but he couldn't. I asked why and he said that the old man had put it in his will that every vehicle there was to be destroyed and sold for scrap. I asked the son why he thought his Father would do that and he told me that his Dad could give you the history on every vehicle in that yard and over the years they had become part of his life. His Father just couldn't bear to part with them because he felt he would be a selling part of his life. He said that his Father had thought when he was gone that that portion of his life should go with him. He also told me that his Father had started that yard when he was in his early 20's and he had spent over 60 years building up his collection of wrecks. Although it pained me to think of all that old iron being melted down as scrap, somehow I could respect his wishes. I had to wonder how many times that old boy had wandered through the yard in the evening and seen a particular vehicle and remember what he had been doing during that time in his life. That 47 Desoto was when he got married. That 52 Mack truck was when his first child was born. That 57 Chevy with the nose torn off? Well that was when his best friend had gone off to war and never came back. Those and the thousands more memories as he passed through life. Thinking about it, I might want to do much the same when my time comes.
