Disrespected, Even When He's Great: Tua Tagovailoa

Why is Tua So Disrespected? Tua Tagovailoa is now in the NFL MVP discussion as the Dolphins finding another gear on offense. Mike McDaniel, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle all get credit & love, but Tua still draws criticism from around the league.
#tua #dolphins #tuatagovailoa #mahomes #tyreekhill #waddle #mcdaniel #flores #miami #QB #justinherbert #joeburrow #quarterback #breakingnflnews #NFL #NFLNews #Breaking #thatsgoodsports #BrandonPerna
That’s Good Sports discussing breaking NFL news. Tua is not Joe Burrow or Justin Herbert, but that’s ok.

Simple answer before I watch: he was bad his rookie year, and people can't believe the development. He's taken huge strides every year, and people don't want to believe he's good. He doesn't even lack arm strength entirely. He's great, I just lost to him as a browns fan, and I admire his game. Thank you for this video. I’ve been defending Tua since his rookie year, and it feels like people just refuse to be objective about him. Even that first year, when you watched him play, the guy had crazy accuracy. But you know it turns out when your HC actively hates you and randomly pulls you out and puts you into games (along with just generally being offensively inept), plus having a garbage o-line and no weapons…it makes it tough on a rookie lmao. Not to mention reports that they were only allowing Tua to work with a limited playbook when he was in. Then last year he looked better, but got his ribs crushed due to his garbage o-line, finally had a real weapon with rookie Waddle, tho that was it besides Mike. But people don’t want to acknowledge Tua working behind the worst o-line in the league, having minimal weapons, and a Hc who has no idea how to run an offense and had it out for Tua I got crazy looks when I told people Tua was gonna go off this year, so many people were talking mad shit. But look at ma boy now. If other folks were willing to trust the eye test, seeing his crazy accuracy and amazing pocket presence, and acknowledge the shifting context around him…they might have been able to see it coming too. He’s a great guy, hope he has a long successful career in this league. Lowkey praying for a Fins Eagles superbowl, would be so cool to see the bama boys duke it out

Those kind of people don’t want to admit Tua is a lot better than they thought he’d be, so they look for reasons why they might still be right (system QB, Waddle & Hill etc). As a Dolphins fan, it's something I hadn't previously considered, but I completely get it. Lamar is #3 in win percentage in history, had one of the best seasons of all time in 2019, and is still finding ways to win despite tons of injuries. The fact that Fields is suddenly balling (and rushing) out of his mind means there's a new exciting extremely talented rushing QB for people to fawn over. Also due to missing his top receiving options, Lamar's pure passing stats aren't on the same level as Mahomes/Hurts/Tua means he slid further down the MVP race so far this season. All that said though, I don't know how anyone would argue he's average/underwhelming/only a product of his system like people still are claiming about Tua.

As a fellow broncos fan I think Tua is incredible. He plays at a high level and has the leadership and drive of a top 5 QB. Brian Flores I think was the main problem with Tua and was trying to hurt his development. Remember the finger incident last year where Tua got benched for being "hurt" when he said he wasn't, then he comes back and lead the dolphins on that huge win streak. That's the main reason why Brian Flores's firing looked weird but if Tua didn't carry them to those wins then there wouldn't have been any controversy at all with his firing.

Too much social media and everyone’s bad comments feed off each other. Very excited about rest of season, and offensive line doing a great job protecting Tua. All around great performances from great new coach to defense and running game getting better. Fins up. He gets my vote for mvp.

Thank you so much for making this video, Perna. Yes, Tua doesn’t have the arm strength to throw the ball 70 yards in the air, nor is he a freakish athlete like Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen… He’s pretty GREAT at everything else! He’s pinpoint accurate, elusive, has great pocket awareness, makes smart decisions, gets the ball out quicker than most QBs, hardly ever turns the ball over, tough as nails, and has become a master at manipulating opposing defenses. Oh yeah, he also wins almost every game he plays. Only time will tell though if he can stay healthy throughout his career.

I've been a Tua fan for a while, always thinking he shouldn't have been playing his rookie season since he was clearly still dealing with that hip injury from Alabama. Did seem like he was about to be thrown under the bus by the Dolphins, but I am glad that the current regime stuck with him and got him the talent to succeed. Here's hoping he can sustain a long career and that he can avoid any concussions. Either way, I hope he does well with his life.

One correction - it's a myth that Tua throws short passes and succeeds because of Hill and Waddle YAC. The numbers say exactly the opposite he connects deep with minimal YAC. He actually had to learn to throw with less velocity when touch and feel were required. He may not have the "biggest" arm in football but disrespect his arm at your peril. Check the numbers.

The reason people dont resoect Tua is because people can not wrp there minds around QB not throwin to Recievers but throwing to spots. Tua throws where he thinks you will be not where he sees you going. He tosses the ball b4 the reciever even makes their move. To do that you have to have insane spacial recognition and confidence in said recognition. QBs like that dont come around often. We only ever have 1 in the league at a time. Its hard to do.
