You should have labeled this an Infomercial and a stock pumping con. I've operated an HVAC business for almost 40 years. I would NEVER do what he's doing. Guess where all the crud goes when his enzyme cleaner (in use for decades in the industry.) is used with the unit running? That's right, into the ductwork and ultimately into the air conditioned spaces. When we clean a large indoor air handling unit, we turn the unit off, then hang a tarp up just downstream of the coil using magnets. We buy the enzyme cleaner in bulk and apply it to the fan side of the evaporator using a 1.5 gallon garden sprayer, equipped with a Shraeder valve so it can be pumped up with an air compressor to about 60 PSI. This high pressure stream penetrates the evaporator very well. Then wash the gunk away with a 3 gallon garden sprayer full of water, again pressurized to 60 PSI while making sure the waste is going down the condensate drain. Or if a garden hose can be brought to the evaporator, rinse it that way. Finally, when possible, we blow out the coil with compressed air. Otherwise when the blower is started, all the water held in the coil by capillary attraction would be blown toward the conditioned spaces. If we can't get compressed air to the evaporator coil, we move the tarp to direct air from the evaporator out the access hatch. Running the fan for a few seconds will clean out all the water. We clean up our mess and if the client has elected the option, install germicidal lamps in front of the evaporator. My standard of clean is of one of my guys can shine a flashlight into one side and I can see light through the coil on the other.

Question. Is the 'gunk' on a plug condenser not flowing into the space as it is? Also to what extent does the enzyme 'neutralize the toxicity of the 'gunk' before it flows into the airstream? Trying to understand all the variables. Thanks.

@neon-john
@neon-john 3 года назад
outdoors on the condenser, I don't see a problem other than the system probably costs multiple times what the conventional methods do. It's indoors where the fans blow the gunk down the ductwork and into the air conditioned spaces. Imagine a gob of that gooey grey-black gorp landing on your desk. Or your head. Or considering a food manufacturing plant. Or a hospital. BTW, the word is "infectious" and not "toxic". People throw "toxic" around these days like they know what it means. I have no idea whether it contains a disinfectant. Probably not, since he claims is has no foul odor.

As a layperson, my BSometer went off the charts. I also wonder why the hell the HVAC manufacturers don't treat their coils to prevent biofilm build-up in the first place. There are well-known methods to prevent this, i.e. plating the aluminum with copper, zinc, silver nanoparticles, boron, or other materials that inhibit microbial growth. A quick Google search shows that this has already been researched and shown to significantly reduce the buildup of biofilms on HVAC coils.
@JacobProbasco

Well, if they don't treat the coils, they sell more replacement coils, so it's not like the financial incentive is there for the manufacturers to add the cost to the manufacturing.

Do you work in residential or commercial? On the "Now You Know" comment section the owner of Blue Box was claiming in the comments that it's the deep large commercial units that they have the advantage. Possibly they have better enzymes? But yeah, they should have mentioned that if it was the case. On the company's website they show substantial improved readings. Is that just normal after a cleaning? It's possible his business does a better or more economical job, and he's doing the salesman overhype.

Too inefficient, too costly and engineering has tried since 1960 . When the last “modern”refinery went on line it had an in line filter designed by Airstream on startup, it burned for 4 days. You can imagine why BP Is not willing to try anything new, and they call them cowboys. UV is not scalable for any amounts of water that require 2 “ piping. It’s virtually not effective under variable size flows. Water is not effective for large scale non water body (rivers and lakes) because in the variable outputs that take water to above boiling each pass are inefficient because heavy water steam. Oh, and Global Warming restrictions now call all heat exchangers to have less than 112 degree top to bottom heat bleed into the atomosphere. Soon the heat will require it be pumped into substantial voids that don’t exist in deserts. Denser foam is the answer to everything. NASA is still working on their scrubbers because humans discharge so many toxins but space limits fresh air, they have over 40 patents on their designs. Blue box reminds me of LeafFiltets. We’ll see where 5 years takes this, but I see this as the next tile polisher, rust coating, couch warranties, etc.

The problem with UV lights in air handlers is that the airflow moves too quickly past the light to sanitize the air. It is beneficial for sanitizing the duct and the coil within a close proximity to the light. Obviously the light doesn't penetrate the coil 100%, reaching every surface. The bulbs are expensive and the power bill adds up. I've installed several, don't currently have one in my own home, but I wouldn't mind one near the coil. I see it as a very marginal benefit.

This is where the idea of not bringing in HVAC people may be hurting him. Building engineers and building owners care IMMENSELY about energy efficiency. That electric bill they pay is likely the largest expense in a commercial office building and the building engineers answer directly for the electric cost. If you aren't selling them the energy savings, you are doing it WAY, WAY wrong. Coils have been schmooed up since the beginning of time. If you can get a 40% drop in dp across the coil on average, that is what you need to sell them. That is the language building engineers speak.

Cleaning requires shutting down the whole plant, which results in millions of gallons of shortages (at least with refineries). This is a good argument for having 10x more refinery plants that can only produce 10% to 15% of one giant one. You can rotate the cleaning without crippling the supply chain. Bonus upside: MORE JOBS.

I did my home unit with an 'ordinary' coil cleaner foam, just seemed sensible to me to open an access panel so foam could travel in direction of airflow (I had to cut into panelling of air handler then fitted a stainless steel plate) There was immediate improvement. It's obviously working 'better' as wife hasn't noticed thermostat setting several degrees higher than it was a year ago and air is 'colder'

But our tendency to immediately crush new companies with new ideas about performing a dirty task? Listen carefully, cleaning while systems continue to run in extremely large facilities. No Oder - I can’t vouch - but no lawsuits exist and the scammer here has patented multiple areas of the process. So in effect, we have to call the US patient office a scammer? No worries- I am not trying to insult anyone, but we have to listen to a business story before calling it misleading. Over the course of the entire conversation, yes, hard or frustrating to some that a slickster in a suit is not presenting a half million dollar video. It’s HVAC. How did I know there would be other angry HVAC professionals in the comments section ha!. This guy thinks he invented coil cleaning, how rich....or at best he thinks he's the first guy to ever try cleaning a coil with the blower or condenser fan running. There are a myriad of reasons why systems are oversized by 40% (in some applications). None of them are that "no one is able to clean the coils". The giant industry of HVAC maintenance contracts does not exist for no reason. Sounds to me like he ran across some facilities maintenance guys at gm that had been failing at maintaining their air handlers because they never used a competent HVAC company and they were probably trying to do it themselves with a shop vac or some other dumb idea. They let their coils get so bad over the years that he was able to make a 40% difference in airflow by actually cleaning the coils. He may succeed in selling his cleaning services, and possibly in selling the stupid kit (or whatever the pitch was going to be) to naive rubes. But you'll never see this stupid crap in an HVAC supply store or a service technician's van. We have heavy duty products and techniques that work already. This isn't innovation, it's someone discovering and solving a problem....that is discovered and solved every day of the week (without his little rolling suitcase of foam). I've invented a brand new way to clean floors...no one has ever cleaned a floor before now. I use a long stick with a bunch of cloth strands on one end....you dip in in a bucket of cleaner and then use my patented ringer outer to squeeze the water out. I call it a flop.... because of the sound it makes when it hits the floor. In ten years people will be flopping their floors all over the world! Also coming soon...ever get tired of cleaning your teeth with your fingernails? How about a small brush that you hold in your hand?....sick of wiping your butt with a handful of leaves like an ape? You'll never guess what I've invented...in comes in a roll....and the more layers I use the more I can claim that one roll is somehow worth six rolls....just so I can irritate people when they are shopping. Okay I'm going to stop now. But wait...you ever get tired of walking through puddles in your bare feet? Have I got a product for you....I call it a foot house...

Its not to late to take this video down, only 67,000 people have seen this. I feel like i just watched a plague of stupidity spread. I had to keep fast forwarding because he was never getting to any points he was trying to make and I was really hoping he'd explain what blue box was...but he never completed any of his thoughts about anything. What was the innovation here? Enzyme coil cleaners have been around for at least 20 years. Is this one better in some way than the others that I missed? Is this something other than a foam lance in a pretty blue cooler? I was certified in HVAC then earned a degree in building construction technologies and worked in the residential and commercial industry. He had a few partial facts correct but I would have to disagree with most of what he said. Evaporator coils are most defiantly intended to be cleaned, it's part of the maintenance of all refrigeration systems that is supposed to occur on what ever schedule is applicable to it's "installed environment". Does it happen (?) NO! In residential applications it's another expense of an already costly system and the evaporator coil is often ignored because it is hidden. Even changing the air filters is to much of an inconvenience for many home owners to bother with on a regular schedule. In a commercial application... again regular maintenance but too many people feel that things don't require attention until something breaks. while bypassing lock-out/ tag-out safety precautions and applying while the unit is operating is probably a better application method. many coil cleaners are self foaming/ self rinsing that the upstream face of the coil is covered in a layer of foam (like shaving cream) the unit is closed up and energized that pulls the foam into the coil and the condensate water rinses it all away. The sizing of HVAC systems are based on "usually" on anticipated thermal loads, environmental influences and the buildings "insulation envelope". Do they oversize systems(?), of course! Are some some oversized incorrectly(?).. yes! But most commercial systems have some variable component that allows the system capacity to vary. If a system is sized to cool a building intended to have 10 people inside of it and 20 people come in than the system is undersized. If you just oversize a system and the same 10 people are there the unit will not run long enough for the humidity to come out of the air and it will feel clammy inside. Variable speed compressors and fans are used to drop the capacity of the system when less cooling or heating is required. To save the people who know know the field from feeling compelled to fill in gaps in what I've said here..... this was overly simplified and most commercial systems are fare more complicated than was necessary for trying to explain on this thread....

The chiller, #2, that went off went off on High Head Pressure due to the greater load put on it due to the cleaner coils. He either misunderstood or doesn't understand. @@dreadone6894 He says in the interview that the foam is completely safe to go down a sewer drain. It would probably clean the drainpipes as it safely goes down the sewer. In fact, municipal water and sewer systems may well become a large customer base for Bluebox. This enzyme sounds like it might be able to break up sewer clogs which are expensive and difficult to take care of.

I'm watching this at 2x speed and I'm getting impatient to know what the product is and what it does. I'm sure that there is a 3 minute way to tell this story.

the problem with UV is that it only address outside 5% of the coil surface area. UV cannot, and does not, penetrate the coil.

That interview sucked. I couldn't even watch it at 2x, it was waaaaay to long and tangential.

This video is what RU-vid is made for - what a totally enjoyable interview with a fired up founder. Would never be able to experience this conversation and insight at this phase of Blue Boxes life cycle, only in INC interview in 10 years when they sell for $500m. This is really cool.
