Thanks George, I use my PID in manual mode and control my flow rate by adjusting amperage. I think I must have watched a video or 100 from barley and hops
Hi George, great to see you again. I'm still using my PID I built from your instructions. Unfortunately I have only 15 amp service at my cabin so I'm stuck using a 1500 watt element. What I've been doing is starting out with propane until 120 degrees, takes no time, then turning the PID on. 1500 watts seems plenty after that to maintain temps.
I use a maize corn big pot with the propane bqq to cook party maize corn. And use the heating floor with the pump in my garage that is colant circulating without the burner on, work just fine .
Absolutely. I think I spent about three hours just setting up, not to mention setting up cameral angles and lighting which I just dismissed to get this filmed. George
@@BarleyandHopsBrewing I'm in between batches currently and trying to figure out staging and lighting to film Column and condenser builds. I feel you. I appreciate the work you put into your production sir.
7:00 an additional note…using ice cold water can create a bit of a mess if you’re distilling indoors or where it’s warmer. Your lines will start to sweat profusely….i mean it’ll really starts pouring some water. Just keep that in mind.
I was just wondering how big your circuit is ? 22 amps is massive, and what can yo ur controller handle in watts ? I have a 3500w which just keeps me under 15amps id love to go bigger but the power is to much for my circuit
Please, please, please, I am afraid of distillation because alcohol has been banned in my country, and I want to distill a liter of vodka from a 3 liter of wine. How much toxic methanol can I remove? I am afraid of blindness and diseases. I hope you can answer me. Thank you.
It won’t be much. I run 15 gallons of mash and throw away about half a quart jar that comes out first. Taste it as it’s coming out when it quits burning your lips you are good.
At 4:25 states, "almost instantaneous readings....". He is totally wrong. Hey George, watch a video from Jesse @ Still-It and learn something.... Search for "Smearing". If you want an instant ABV reading of the distillate at the condenser spout, use an alcohol refractometer. A parrot might be OK for a boiler 100 litres (25g) or more.
This is why I say almost instantaneous. Smearing is difficult to control or calculate accurately. The Parrot allows you to be in the ball park. Thanks George
George: When you run water through there, what does it do?... Me: It cools it George: "Yes, it pre-condenses those vapours that are flowing up and causes them to drop back down and re-vaporise, thus purifying it" Me: ... I was close... It's like being in high school again, thanks George!
Wahoo! Now we are getting into the good stuff. Not that it wasn't good before but this is the part that I like the most. We are getting into the Electronics, and producing that sweet corn. Great work George and thanks for you doing this, it is appreciated.
Love watching a perfect, drip, drip, spurt, drip, drip spurt. Just like you said, can you run it faster, yes, but should you? Probably not if you are looking for quality in anything but a vodka.
Another GREAT Video with Easy to understand explanation. I always like to see the whiteboard in the background. It lets me know I have some education coming my way! Happy Distilling!
Is the angle of the condenser important? Obviously, it needs to be run downhill but mine runs nearly vertical due to space. Most times I see people with it at 30- 45 degrees. I just wondered if perhaps at a 45-degree angle the liquid moves to the bottom side and flows out leaving vapor to move to the top side. On the verticle drop is there a chance the liquid falls so fast it drags some vapor with it and out the end?
45 degree ange is optimal (in almost any application across the sciences). Anywhere near that for a condenser is good. The idea is to use gravity in your favor. Veritcle can be problematic at times and level is even less efficient.
thanks George, I had a feeling that was true. I sure don't want to loose any of my precious juice to the angels that I don't have to. @@BarleyandHopsBrewing
Hi George. Thanks for the video. I've been running this exact set up in both reflux and pot modes for a few years now. I couldn't be more pleased with it.
