A classic example is the translation of "avihimsa" into harmlessness (ahimsa), whereas the true meaning of the word is non-cruelty.

Hmmm. I mostly take the ‘vi’ prefix as an intensifier. And perhaps cruelty is more intense then harm. How do you read vibhava in the 2nd ariyasacca versus a-bhava if i remember that spelling correctly.

The suttas regarding Venerables Upali and Maha Pajampati Gotami with the 37 factors for awakening appears an excellent guide for those that practice. Should a scholar know linguistics, but not practice to know for oneself how could they be trusted to really know what is Dhamma Vinaya?

Although Abhidhamma may not be the word of the Buddha, it certainly is based on the Buddha word. The Abhidhamma may also pass the tests prescribed to the Venerables Maha Pajapati Gotami and Upali. Hence, it may not be wise to discard Abhidhamma as not "true Dhamma."

@Malik. True. Abhidhamma is relevant to Buddhism but it is not the "word of the Buddha"; it is more of a commentary. May you be well & happy.☸☸☸

Sounds reasonable if it supports your practice. Remember each school had its own Abhidhamma. I personally find the Suttas more instructive and inspiring. The Theravada Abhidhamma that i investigated was very dry.

I feel he means Abhidhamma is not primary. As it now sseems to be in Myanmar. In the Heart Sutra of the Mahayana Sariputra is instructed by Avalokiteshvara in wisdom (prajna) where historically Sariputta was the Bhikkhu disciple foremost in wisdom (pañña). One good explanation is Sariputra became the poster bhiksu for the Sarvastivada Abhidharma.
