just wondering with the back stepping; you wait until it cools in between back steps or just continuous?

Hi! Appreciate the work you put into this video. Need to weld two plates together at 90 degrees as close as possible. Didn’t know about the back-stepping method, so will try this. Plates are 15 mm (slightly less than 5/8 in). Don’t need “full penetration”, think 3-4 mm on each side is plenty (3/32 - 1/8 in). They shall be L-shaped when done, planning a fillet on the inner side and bevel one plate on the outer side. Or better bevel both plates so I get a 90 degree groove? Any tips and tricks are welcome 🤗 Also, I’ll have a stiffener plate at about 2/3 of the 20 inch length. Plan to tack up all and then start welding. The stiffener should keep it in place if I apply the back stepping method. I hope 😮

Hi, good question. Lots to type here so hang with me :D Okay so I'm imagining the plates flat on a table, forming an "L" when viewed from the side. The vertical plate is what I would bevel; apply a 30 degree bevel on the outer side. Thinking about distortion, the more heat and weld metal we deposit on one or both sides is going to open us up for more distortion. So bevel just one, not both. I'd also bump up the size of the fillet on the inner side. Just thinking about the thickness of the plates, I'd try to have 1/4 inch. Hope this helps!
