Walt insisted on having THIS on main street USA... and now it’s gone.
In the Distorian's Lounge with Kate this week, we explore the unique history of Disneyland’s West Center Street. Starting with some beautiful (but plastic) displays, we discover the reason for the pickle cart on East Center Street, take a ride in the Carnation milk truck with Walt, find some bizarre cheeseburgers, and discuss medical antiques from the 1800s that used to have a home in Disneyland. Along the way, we’ll tell a few side stories about CV Wood, getting sponsors to pay for Disneyland, and exactly why the shops are so small on Main Street U.S.A.

Thanks, I thought I remembered a candle shop but it’s been so long that I thought it was a false memory. As a kid it was fascinating. I guess I’m not crazy after all. I also remember the flower market, east and west and its slow demise. I Was intrigued with the fake fruit.

I wish we could still buy flowers/fruit there as a throwback to that era! At least we can buy real fruit 🤷‍♀️

This particular video was really great. What a fun, specific deep dive! Thank you so much! Question, if we may. When we did our "What was on Main Street when The Park opened" (part of our Ep 208), we cross-referenced a bunch of sources (Daveland, Yesterland, Disney History 101, et cetera) and it appeared the Book & Candle Shop was (at least in '55) in / part of Crystal Arcade. But it was always in that back corner of West Center Street? With the entrance FROM West Center Street, or could you at one point get in from the on-Main Street Crystal Arcade Entrance? It also appeared (from our "what was there then" research) there was a 2ND Book & Candle Shop in that back corner at some later date. But, with your wonderful episode here, it now seems they were likely the same (IF, perhaps, the entrances may have changed)? Thank you again for ALL your wonderful -- and wonderfully delivered -- insight!

From what I’ve seen, the main entrance was from west center street, but there was a sign hanging on Main Street closer to the entrance of the Crystal Arcade likely to “advertise” and let people know it was back there. As for direct access through the arcade, it seems likely, but from everything I’ve seen the “main entrance” was on the side. I’ll have to do some more digging and see what I can uncover. I do believe there was only one shop though.
