@@Marylandbrony Yea there was hope that mRNA vaccines would be more effective but the results are amazing. Not only for covid either. Many vaccines will now switch to this platform. They will almost certainly be more effective for most viral diseases and they can be produced cheaper and faster. There is even hope that they can be produced fast enough and changed quickly enough that we can start vaccinating against the common cold. There is real hope that 2020 will not just be remembered as a terrible year but the year we found a long term solution to viral diseases in general.

The question was why did he focus so much on America, and because we can not talk to him, we have to speculate. We also do not have any prof that China won't give its vaccine to other countries but in America and Eu's case all of the countries that are making a vaccine in those states have committed to giving it out world wide, were China has not. China is also a VERY smart and they know how much good publicity they would get if they say 100% of there country is vaccinated and this would also cause more people to go for tourism because they know it will be safe. I had no proof but from previous examples and common sense it is pretty basic stuff that china would not want to give it out to others.

There simply isn't a cold chain in many countries (I spent a few years living in India working in Retail Supply Chain - this is one the biggest areas requiring investment - there are very few refrigerated warehouses or trucks out there)

They both specialise in ambient products, and when Amazon need to ship chilled goods they get a third party to do it. Coke products don't require cooling and that is left to the retailer.

I mean there's certainly no guarantee that anyone else will go to great lengths to help developing nations either, but at least its not fundamentally against the ideology of most countries. China in particular might attempt to get vaccines to at least certain African countries quicker in order to help get their belt and road initiative back on track. Did you listen at all, the model that ran that way resulted in more deaths because of the large gap in infrastructure and logistic networks, this has nothing to do with greed and everything to do with how much more challenging it will be to distribute vaccines to rural and poor places

They were comparing rich vs poor _countries._ In particular, it looks like the first-to-market vaccine will be American, and its highly likely (even if Trump loses) that America will ensure that they get the entire production run first before letting any of it to be exported. The model points out that more people will die _overall_ if that happens. Of course, what the model doesn't take into account is any sort of subjective desires. While you might save more people in the world as a whole, it would come at the cost of losing more people within the US. And I can guarantee you that not a single American politician from either party will hesitate to save 20,000 American lives even if it means losing 200,000 lives in some African countries that many Americans don't even know the names of. Hell even if it was a 2,000:2,000,000 ratio it would be a hard sell. And I can't even say that that's necessarily _wrong_ given the social structures of the world as it exists today -- humans always prefer "our group" to "the other," and at this point in history we tend to define "our group" based on arbitrarily delineated national borders (well and skin color, but that will end up being more of an internal issue than an international one with respect to covid distribution. I suspect that will become a massive problem in the US before all is said and done given well, everything, but its not the problem that this particular model was looking at.)

I can't speak for China, but we don't really have high speed freight in Japan, and the doors on shinkansen aren't designed for things like refrigerated crates. We have good refrigerated freight infrastructure, though, and Japan is small enough that freight can go anywhere overnight using conventional means.
