Yes, we've listened to Draiman singing "The Sound of Silence" in his music video last year. But I wanted to hear a version live that's closely similar to the Simon and Garfunkel version. Enter Myles Kennedy. I was so impressed listening to "Watch Over You" that I wanted to bring this version of both Disturbed and Myles together.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Disturbed featuring Myles Kennedy performing "The Sound of Silence” live.

Excellent point. When I heard her say “At the top of his whole voice range here”, I think she still needs to see a lot more Myles Kennedy. Myles himself says he is pushing 4 octaves but seen a few breakdown analysis videos showing he has sang across 5+. When asked about what he considered the "secret" to great vocal performances, Kennedy replied: "Dig deep into your soul and sing as if your life depends on it. Leave your mark. People react to emotion more than technique." I would add: Depth of emotion coupled with great technique produces outstanding performances.

I totally agree with your tonal descriptions! The first time I had heard the Disturbed version of this song, it came on the radio while I was driving and I had to pull into a parking lot somewhere to just sit and cry. At the time, I was losing both my mom & my wife to cancer. Disturbed’s performance with the building crescendo, combined with the sadness, anger and despair of David’s vocals carried, in a few brief moments, all of the emotions that I was feeling. With the addition of Miles’ voice in this version adding a new layer, and yet resonating with David’s vocals, it creates an extra layer of sadness, or like you said, almost an auditory teardrop, to the song at one point. But oddly, it almost made me feel a hint of hope with that addition as well. As you’ve said before, a song and especially a voice, can tell a story and make you feel what the vocalist is feeling. A performance can touch a heart and can maybe change the world, even if it’s the world of just one person when they hear it in the right place and at the right time. I’m still going to “ugly cry” every time I hear this song, but now with this version, there is a little bit of hope mixed in with those tears as well. So an enormous “Thank You” to Disturbed & Miles Kennedy for doing this video, and to you for taking us along on the journey with you as you watched it!

I was at this concert in Houston. I am a huge Alter Bridge fan and they opened for Breaking Ben and Disturbed for this one. The fact that Myles hit those notes a hour after his 8 song set is absurd to me. I had heard the disturbed cover a few times before this and was blown out of the water during this performance. I had no idea how electric, memorable and moving that performance would be. Its the best performance I have ever seen live and sent chills throughout my body almost the entire song. I believe they did it one more time at Red Rock after this. They put the Houston version on their deluxe release of that album a few months later. Incredible...

The cover by Disturbed brought the same emotion to this song, that I have said it needed when I first heard the original. I felt Simon and Garfunkel seemed to rush through it and lacked the intensity and emotional connection the lyrics demanded. Also, watching the tympani player and hearing him was great. Without him, the song would have been missing the foundation it deserves and I would argue requires. Great video. I stumbled on your channel recently and enjoy it. I was once studying opera performance as a bass. Under the teaching of great vocal coach who won many Chicago Met and New York Met competitions going on to sing with the US Army Chorus in the 70s. I married his Alto/Soprano 2 singing daughter 25 years ago! I still enjoy singing with him and my wife. I love how you bring your trained ear and voice to the world of metal. That's what I feel would happen to me. What I love about this they knew how David was going to perform the song and Myles just had to weave above, below and within what David already does. He clearly tried to make them match Simon and Garfunkle at times and then at other times they 'make it their own' but they do so while still in reverence of the original.

@@douglasernst9477 You don't have to point out you are a manly man just because you shed a few tears. Read through history and you will find great conquerors mention shedding tears during certain moments. Only a psychopath lacks enough empathy and emotion to remain dry eyed in all circumstances. A strong willed man is one who feels those emotions but carries on doing whatever he must do. That is not to say we should devolve into floods every time something upsets us of course. @@douglasernst9477 I don't know many men who cry, at least not in front of others lol. If one of my friends did that in front of me then it would likely be something truly awful had happened and I wouldn't mock them for it. The last time it happened was when a friends wife had a late term miscarriage, which I think is a more than reasonable time for a man to shed some tears. There is also a difference between tearing up when witnessing something incredible and full on crying like a child over it. For example I find myself tear up whenever I watch testimonies of men who fought in WW2 and recount the loss of their friends. It doesn't cause me to weep because I control myself, but the heroism and honour of such men is very moving.

Why wouldnt other singers be able to hit that note? @@elevown it’s a saying; you don’t have to take it so literally. There may be a small select few with the ability to hit that note, but that doesn’t mean they can pull it off in the same manner. A guitarist can look up the tablature of a song and learn to hit the right notes at the right time, but it won’t have the same sound, emotion or impact as when (let’s say) Steve Vai plays the same notes in the song. Myles was also sick during that performance, which makes it that much more impressive.

Simon and Garfunkel's version was a great song. Disturbed elevated it to an even greater song. And now, David and Myles have made this the highest evolution of the song. I can't imagine anyone ever improving on it at this point.

It's one thing to see two angels on the earth perform at the top of THE game. Not their game, THE game. They are unarguable proof (and you hear/see this a lot on here because it's true) of the range of rock and metal. But it's entirely another to see a person of your training and passion listen to this, be deeply affected by it and give it back to your listeners in ways that makes us appreciate it just a little bit more. That's special indeed.

Wow.....yeah, wow. Outstanding analysis. Simon & Garfunkel first recorded SoS in early 1964 - it is still relevant today, perhaps more so. The number of "analysts" who have said, "this sounds familiar, but I don't know who wrote it", or "Is this a cover, I'm not sure", ...astounds me. "Those who ignore history are destined to repeat it" - my cover. This live performance took a great cover by Disturbed and perfected it. Thanks for the work you do; time well spent on my end listening to your presentations. Thanks!

Anybody notice after a few missed timings that Dave began subtly using his arm gestures to help direct? The first one was on "narrow streets of cobblestone" where he goes from open hand to closed fist where he wanted the plosive from the word "stone" to be. 5:25 another at 7:33 on "split the night." Very subtle, very smooth way of bringing them into sync. By 8:20 both are dead on.
@jamesmarschalk5564
@jamesmarschalk5564 2 года назад
I was hearing the same thing but Elizabeth wasn't bringing it up so I just went with it but then went back and listened and sure enough it's there. I could hear the timing off. I didn't put together that David had started "directing" it but it makes sense as of course Myles doesn't have the experience singing this song the way David has and yes it did bring things back in line. Good call.

As always, I love Elizabeth's analysis of performances and I learn so much in the process. She hears things that I would never notice. In this video, however, I thought the Myles Kennedy harmonies where significantly different from the Art Garfunkel harmonies. To my ears, Myles was exploring different harmonic intervals from the beginning, as opposed to the constant intervals used by Art. It would be interesting to play the Myles harmony and the Art harmony together on a keyboard. I would be surprised if they were all that similar. If you deviate from the melody of a song very much, you are no longer singing the same song, but there is more freedom with the harmonic notes, and I think Myles took that freedom and ran with it, which is perfect for the Disturbed rendition of the song.
@carl13579
@carl13579 2 года назад
You are correct. Myles' harmonies had more freedom, using intervals like a major 7th.

I just left your video of just Disturbed doing this song, and left a big comment.. But here, as I am enjoying this one,, it id funny how you are recognizing the facial aspect to their singing ability! In my search to find reaction videos of this song to share with the reactionaries, I watched one with an older voice coach. He explained how David was , don't quote me, I am summarizing my memory of what he said, but it was to the affect of singing through his face, or using facial muscles to achieve certain outcomes to the voice! Which, I found to actually be true! I always tried to sing. No Sinatra, But in my car or wherever,, sitting in on a song with friends in a band etc. I always believed growing up that your voice came from your diaphragm, deep from your belly, etc, and I always tried to belt and never use falsetto. But after hearing this,, though without proper training,, I tried different methods of 'singing through my face', or using my face muscles to maybe achieve things I wasn't able to, or transitions etc. And,, hot diggity,, it worked!! I have much to learn, even though I am 57 now,, but I am sure there are many other area of the anatomy used to help reach certain vocal goals I never heard of!

It's always refreshing to see a vocalist like David Draiman who is so known for his rougher vocal textures delve into something more soulful and traditional. And having the soaring prowess of Miles is even better. At parts I was actually in disbelief that it was just two voices up there and not a backing choir as well as the way their voices complemented each other was sublime. It gave it an ethereal haunting, almost gospel/biblical feel to it with the orchestral elements simmering away in the back. Simply otherworldly stuff

Octaves are also a multiple/divisor of one frequency, as measured in Hertz. One octave is either half or double, e.g. 440 Hz and either 220 Hz or 880 Hz would typically be 'A' notes which parallel each other. Because the waveform shares that common denominator, the two 🕝or more waves can have their peaks & troughs align in phase, making their amplitude (volume) stronger, in addition to being audibly pleasing.
