I heard somewhere that someone said "metal singers can't sing." Then David said "Hold my beer!"

So glad you felt it too. My son sent this to me and at 71 years of age, a 23 year Marine Corps veteran, 2 years continuous in combat in Vietnam in the late 60s ... I cried. Simon and Garfunkel sang out the warning but David Draiman drives home the rage and helplessness of humanity for not having listened to that warning!

When Simon and Garfunkel sang this it was a warning, they could see what was happening in the world. This version is sung in anger because the warning was not heeded and now we are living in the sound of silence.

As a member of the generation that grew up with Simon and Garfunkle's version, the message did not penetrate people's thick skulls. Maybe David D'd version will make a little bit more impact. He has that effect on people when it comes to his singing, especially with this song in particular. Fun fact, his grandfather is/was the head cantor at the main synagogue of Jerusalem itself, so he absolutely was born with this gift of singing.

FYI, he's not enhancing his voice in the studio, he really is this good live. Disturbed and Linkin Park were some of the best bands I ever saw when I was a teenager, they were amazing live.

Disturbed are a Heavy Metal band. They have some pretty mellow songs too, Darkness being one. The singer's name is David Draiman, and (in my opinion) he's got one of the greatest metal voices I've ever friggin' heard.

Dudes voice can literally bring me to tears. Few singers have had that effect on me. Brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard the song.

So disturbed is a heavy metal band, but this guy (one of the lead singers) is clasically trained in OPERA of all things, this was his way of showing that off. (to our delight)

This is my favorite version of this song by far! I’ve listened to disturbed since I was in my late 20’s. When this song appeared I wasn’t sure. Then I heard the song and tears and emotion flowed. I was floored. I’m so happy for you that you were able to receive the same gift. The song is Amazing to say it mildly. Now At 47 I’ve never heard a performance of this song that even comes close to this man.

I remember when I first hear David Draiman sing this for the first time. I turned to my wife Darlene and I said, "If Zeus could sing from his throne on Mt. Olympus, with bolts of liquid lightning dripping from his voice it would sound something like his vocals on this song." It's just unbelievable.

No lies, I freaking CRIED when I heard this version for the first time. Simon & Garfunkle's original, while great, just had this kinda spaced-out quality to it. Like, they were acknowledging that the world is falling apart, but they've kind of resigned themselves to their depressing fate. Draiman and Disturbed are saying "Yeah, this sucks, but I'll be DAMNED if I'm just gonna sit here and do nothing about it."

His name is David Draiman, and he is as spiritually deep as his cover of *The Sound of Silence* He STOPPED A SHOW to save a woman's life as she was being crushed by the crowd in "The pit." He honored her by having her on stage as he continued to perform. I am a messenger through music. I have made people laugh, cry, and even change negative attitudes to positive... but I am easily forgotten, and that's okay. *David Draimon* can NEVER be forgotten. Now imagine the affect that had on everyone when it was first released, and society was a much, much simpler way of life. Back then there were very few songs that even came close to this level of depth of soul. This was a truly transformational message in it's day.

I have to tell you I can't get enough of this cover. I have watched probably over 100 reactions to thus and I still love yours the best. You didn't hold anything back and the reaction you had was exactly how I felt. You along with another young lady that I saw and she explain that in Africa the gave town criers and she compared David to one of them. She said no matter what you were doing the voice if the criers over powered everything else and that the crier had voice that was comannding not over powering. Thank you for your honest reaction. That was pretty much my reaction when I first saw this video by Disturbed. Somebody had shared it with me. I thought to myself before I played it "This is gonna suck" since I knew the S & G version my whole life. Then from the start I sat there in awe, chills up & down my spine as I listened to arguably one of the best covers I've ever heard. I played it at least another 5 or 6 times that day. Pulled my wife in to hear it and she loved it too. No idea how many times I've played the Letterman video, too.

There ya go David, bring them to there knees when you open up that legendary voice. Simply amazing.

I loved her reaction. Of course, those of us who are aware know David Draiman is front man for Disturbed, but also does a significant amount of producing for other artists. His voice, his instrument, can range from the sublime like in “The Sound of Silence”, to a percussion instrument, like “Stricken”, and “Down With The Sickness.” We have had hints of Dave’s brilliance in “Remember” and “The Light”, but “The Sound of Silence” simply revealed it for the rest of the world. Ironically, David’s dad, an Orthodox Jew, had never listened to him until he did Paul Simon’s song.

The sound is not the power.. The sound is only the conduit.. Its power of the words within the tone, to reach the darkness, within the soul, where true power lies. Even when I first heard the 2 men whose voices I heard sing this first when I was very young, and felt the words come from them, I knew it had power. Disturbed tapped that power. They knew there was something more to be unleashed. And to see another feel that power makes me shake. Cause I can feel it as I watch.

I found it interesting that you didn’t know who DISTURBED was, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. Most people dismiss them because they think “it’s just another metal band” but their lyrics are quite deep.
