Right??? I would be livid if my brother suggested something like that, and so would our parents! They would not be okay with any inappropriate behavior from either of us, let alone if we recording it and posted online for everyone to see for the rest of our lives.
"are you stronger than a 10 year old?" brent's audience would think being stronger than a 10 year old is an incredible feat because they're so young that 10-year-olds are basically grown-ups to them
“The thumbnail looks like an adult movie!” Yet RU-vid not only allows it to be on the platform WITHOUT BEING AGE RESTRICTED. They reward creators who do this by putting them on the trending page.
You know you're right. Where's the justice for creators like ACT MAN or lessor known creators that YT crushes under their thumb while assholes like this have the run of the platform? #justiceforactman
They don't care cuz they're getting money as well whoever Google or whoever by putting them on the trending page so sad I'm glad my kids are grown we didn't have any cell phones or TV
Can confirm, as someone who has grown up with this type of content, that this is pretty damaging on the way that you view things in the world. These videos really shouldn't be marketed to kids.
I think people tend to exaggerate these kinds of things. I agree his videos are inappropriate and he should either change his demographic or make more kid appropriate videos but I highly doubt those videos are gonna mentally damage anyone for the rest of their life.
@@PeterGriffin11 I agree, mostly. That's not really what I'm saying. They haven't really "mentally damaged" me but it's really warped how I view things. It's not just his content but kids content as a general. I feel like I could have had a more positive childhood if I wasn't exposed to such things at such a young age. I really hope you understand where I'm coming from. It's not about mentally straining the children, but more about monitoring what children are exposed to especially if it it's difficult for the children to consciously process. It's more about what it teaches children, not how it effects the kids brain to develop. Atleast this is from personal experience, I should have probably done more research into this before saying anything I will admit. I hope this clears some things up.
Brent Rivera is 24. This is a grown-ass man, this has been a grown-ass man for years, and his whole personality is putting on a teeny bopper voice and Loony Toons sound effects over the most sexually suggestive content geared at 8 year olds.
i almost find it relieving that hes 24 (for reference i though he was 24 when danny made his video on his instagram content like four or five years ago). still sux that hes making this content after all these years tho
Schools NEED to start teaching online safety courses or something. Teach kids to fact check stuff they hear online, how to find RELIABLE sources, and the dangerous of parasocial relationships. I am genuinely worried for the generation of ipad babies, these kids are gonna be so fucked up.
All I learned in Elementary school was how to look things up using the least words possible, and don't put your personal info online. Then, in 8th grade, we learned about 'creeps' (they didn't use the proper terms. Just creeps), but not how to properly identify them. They only talked about the surface level stuff. We really need better education about this stuff in school.
I was in 6th grade when they taught us about how advertisers use different tactics to mislead, but all of the ads were from the superbowl, or 10 years old at least. They didn't teach us about things we actually see on the daily. The ads we are bombarded with when we are looking at articles they want us to read were simply ignored. It was all outdated crap that we already knew was misleading. The fact that they use cardboard to make burgers look thicker, or motor oil as syrup. It was like they found a Buzzfeed article and made it into a class.
I remember when I was in elementary school back in the early 10's, we had a "computers" class where we just did stuff on computers. one day my teacher gave us this assignment, a list of websites for us to check out, and to decide by ourselves whether it's reliable or not. I remember that one of the sites we had to check out was the original site for the tin foil hat conspiracy, and I actually wrote down that it was true. I felt kind of embarrassed when she went through the answers to the class at the end, but it taught me a really important lesson. I'm really thankful that that assignment was something I had to do at a young age, and just how easy it is to be tricked by sites with disinformation. I think it was a really effective way of demonstrating that it's best to be skeptical about EVERY piece of information you see. and looking back at it now, I doubt any of us kids got a perfect answer, at least not the majority of us did. it was just a realization that I really value.
Children are never too young to discuss marketing tactics with them. For instance, rather than discussing why the headphones weren't great, it would be a great moment to discuss HOW the headphones were marketed, what words were used to trigger emotions in the viewer, and how those apply to all other types of products.
This! Showing them what the intention of a video might be and why it’s not necessary healthy or realistic while still toeing the line and not shaming their interests is difficult, but I wish someone had done that for me as someone who was a kid when all the social media platforms really popped off.
My language arts teach from middle school taught us this actually. It made it impossible for me to watch commercials (something I used to love for some reason) but it 100% helped me as an adult an keeps me from making bad purchases.
@@upsetstudios1819 i think he's trying to say that kids are often smarter and more mature than people give them credit for especially with the advent of the internet but it came off in a really weird way
@DonDoesProgramming if you mean they’re smarter than most people realize and are able to figure stuff out easier that is absolutely true. They are definitely innocent by nature obviously and sometimes it’s better to keep them like that growing up but I do agree they are much more observant than people realize lol
lmao brent rivera's mom was a teacher at my elementary school. there were times when she would let him onto campus after school to record videos with her students which is weird and completely against the regulations of my district. there were a lot of teachers who wanted her fired because we're not supposed to have people filming without express consent from higher-ups. its also just weird to film and profit off of elementary schoolers without parent permission imo. he also used to get so offended whenever kids didn't go frothing-at-the-mouth insane for him. Dude's pathetic as hell
@@cuntapalooza i'm not sure, but i don't think so. my little brother just promoted out of there and i didn't see her at the ceremony, which most of the teachers tend to be at edit: I WAS WRONG. i checked the school website and she's still there teaching 4th/5th grade. God is cruel!
This guys kind of content and weird boundary-lass hanging out with his children fans, along with his “like/reply if you’re single LIKE ME” calls for actions give me creepy groomy vibes. With so manny RU-vidrs being accused with grooming and SA-ing their young audiences, it’s hard to believe that this kind of content and behavior still mostly goes under the radar. Thank you for shedding some light on this shady guy
If I had to choose between letting my hypothetical future kid watch regular youtube vs videos that are specifically made for kids, I'd choose regular youtube. It's somehow more wholesome. I mean, zoomers may have seen things we shouldn't have seen online as kids, but at least we didn't grow up on Spider Man impregnating Elsa with Minnie Mouse as the midwife.
Yep, I'd rather them watch 3hr essay on how US zoning laws are linked to slavery then 10 min of "kids" content. At best they will learn something, at worst they will end up traumatized in all the correct ways.
@@tophatcat9996 what about don't hug me I'm scared? Tho to be fair the worst of the worst things that were on the internet in my age was two girls one cup and it definitely had an impact on me to this day.
When will RU-vid stop having such stupid double standards of banning creators for saying a cuss word but allowing people like Brent to have a child audience
We really need to get a new form of entertainment online beyond "shocking" or "offensive" videos made by perpetual 12 y/olds, because we're so far gone from the days of most content taking creativity & talent to make & become popular.
The almighty algorithm is driven by "shock" value, so change will have to come from pressuring changes at YT and Google. For now, reporting his content might be a good idea.
@@consentclub8431 i don’t even mean that, i mean even like elvis was picked up by a record company because he was handsome and they thought kids would buy his records.
This dude is an absolute atrocity to Brents everywhere. As a spokesperson for the community of Brents I hereby move to revoke his Brent status. He’s now a Bert
I remember when my mother temporarily banned my brother and me from watching RU-vid over the "Sitting on the Toilet" video. If she caught us watching Brent Rivera video, my brother and I would've grown up Amish.
This is why I worry about my baby cousin. My aunt just lets him watching RU-vid unsupervised and I wouldn’t be surprised if he stumbled upon videos like these!
truly worrying. youtube is so destructive if you are not able to discern the dangers. have you tried talking to your aunt? maybe showing her this video or another one on the topic, for example the one on logan paul’s new energy drink that pinely uploaded not long ago. video was spot on as well denouncing how these grown men market to children
That is concerning. I worry about all the kids being raised by the internet and social media without supervision. I would not let my kids online or have social media if i ever have children. It's so easy to stumble on misinformation, porn, bigotry. I recommend talking to her about the dangers of the internet, even online children's games like roblox.
as a girl who grew up on youtube, i can definitely say a lot of the misogyny that was pushed on me by the youtubers i watched definitely affected me a lot and still subconsciously does now.
Yeah right ?? It felt so unraveling how he treats his sister, I mean I’m all cool with teasing and joking around w/ your sibling but- sexualising them ?? Ew
It's interesting to me how a lot of the editing techniques Bret uses are superficial similar to Japanese Reality/Variety shows - but the latter read as completely for adults while Bret's comes off so juvenile
A friend of ours had to go to a funeral so we (myself and my gf) volunteered to babysit her son. He's about 6. So I thought it would be fun (and would keep him quiet) if I let him play Crash Bandicoot. He was enjoying it but what amazed me was how he was talking while playing it. He's a very shy, quiet, polite kid, but while playing he was doing the stereotypical Let's Play gamer talk like "WOAH, no way, I totes got it" and "Aw man, I can't believe that". He wasn't talking to me. To him, this was how you play games, since it's what you see. Kids are incredibly smart and I hate when people belittle them, but I think when you're exposed to something and see nothing but that type of content (even as an adult), it's easy to think "oh, this is how I do that thing, exactly like that". I don't think there's anything wrong with just random trash, but because of the algorithm, not only can you be fed nothing but that RU-vidr, but what little range you're exposed to is bound to in the same style. So it's if it's not this Brent guy, it's someone he either leads to or from.
I used to watch Brent when I was in middle school. (Early 2014-ish RU-vid) A lot of this content is like y/n fan fiction-fan service. It might not have been that bad when Brent himself was a teen (since at that time his audience was other teens) but now it’s *definitely* weird.
Elronn Hubberd figured out the easiest way to get rich was to start a religion. I think the modern equivalent is to start an obnoxious and sometimes questionable youtube show aimed at highly impressionable kids.
can i just say a few things, only 5:30 in and i’m PISSED. OFF. I’m a preschool teacher. i’m new to it but let me just tell you that children should not be viewing this bullshit. not simply because it mentions sex but because of the ALIEN way that it does so, acting like sex is this big huge WOWOWOWO thing when really, most people will have a sexual experience in their lives and that is OK and normal. I absolutely hate the shower thing because my partner and i are in college & each have roommates- YOU HEAR PEOPLE FUCKING SOMETIMES. JUST LEAVE THE HOUSE OR PUT IN HEADPHONES. No one really actually goes “ OOOOOH MY GOD OOOH NO NO NO” if anything they say a really quick apology and get the hell outta there because they want to respect your privacy. god. stop cartoonizing sex please it hurts people
its good to know your brother has someone who can teach him about these kinds of things. so many boys grow up being homophobic, transphobic, sexist, etc. because no one has taught them any different. as someone who is afab, i have known 3 boys in total at my school who are open minded and well-educated on these types of issues. im not exaggerating when i say only 3. and on top of that, 2/3 only recognized those issues because they're part of that minority. the rest of my school throws around the f and r slur like its no big deal, casually body shames and insults the girls, and makes harmful jokes disguised as "dark humor". im glad people like you are helping to break the cycle of young kids being taught that this behavior is okay.
Why are so many kids into political stuff like that anyway? Why are so many young people either into social activism or the edgy anti-SJW culture? Just be kids! Play some Nintendo games and watch Cyberchase or something. I can't believe that I have to say this, but... There's nothing wrong with just living and enjoying life. You don't have to be glued to the news to be a good person, no matter what journalists and influencers say.
I remember being like 14 or 15 and he followed me on twitter out of NOWHERE. I had no idea who he was but since he had so many followers I was excited and followed him back. But he was boring so I unfollowed not too long after... This was like 7 years ago
It's like he wants to make more adult content cuz he's an adult but he doesn't want to lose his audience of minors cuz they brought him the success he has rn, but rather than making a decision to either stick with child-friendly content or move to more adult content, he'd rather just do both by doing creepy shit like this. It's sickening how common it is for child-friendly channels to do pranks and challenges that really shouldn't be marketed towards children. And I suspect the reason they get away with it is cuz they bring in a lot of people and money to RU-vid so RU-vid doesn't really care what they do so long as it's just below the line for reasonable deniability on their part.
Kids RU-vid videos are mostly just this. There’s that blonde lady who always has like 5 other creators and they do money challenge that are just fulllll of sexist, regressive concepts- but they are also full of WaCKy sound effects, big houses, limos, candy, extravagant clothes and all the challenges are stuff kids would think is PEAK suspense. I lose time off my life hearing them blasted from a kids iPad 🙃
Trisha Paytas was my favorite RU-vidr when I was in middle school. I didn't know what sex was until I watched her. I think her videos gave me an unhealthy image of men
9:30 I love the idea that he's excited about the possibility of her asking him for a ride as if that wouldn't force him to admit it's not actually his car or deny her the car ride
I've asked my kids to wait until they are older to watch this kind of stuff, they don't even want to see crap like that, it's fake and misogynistic, and kids shouldn't be forced to grow up so fast
Not even grow up so fast, more like growing up incorrectly with like you said, fake and misogynistic crap. Also, thank you for being aware and protecting your kids from this type of content.
It’s funny that you make this video because I just watched Ethan’s video like a couple of days ago but thank you for bringing light to this, people like this need to be held accountable for labeling this exploitive content as kids content, this can be so harmful to a developing kids brain! But thank you for being you, keep making videos & changing the world!
This is off topic from the video, but I have to say, I’m glad you moved your channel in the direction it is. I loved the little box man, but I think putting yourself out there, and the different scenes for different sections are a really nice addition to your videos. The box man was great, but I think this just gives your videos more personality, and hopefully you finally get the recognition you deserve.
I think the biggest reason he does this kinda content, is because kids like to doing wrong stuff. They like the feeling of doing something only grownups can do. And they know “kissing” is not for their age, so they watch it without fully understanding it.
No because a few years ago on Instagram his sister posted a picture of her in a pink and blue fit with the caption "Feeling like cotton candy" and why Brent comment "I love cotton candy😋" underneath....
hey pinely, ive been subbed for a little while and watched your channel change a lot. the editing is has become so good and the style change has been a surprised but a good one. keep it up, can't wait to see where you go next!
Thank you and Ethan for highlighting this disgusting practice used by Brent. When you try and explain how this stuff isn't suitable to his very young audience many just regard you as a "hater" or "jealous" of Brent. The idolise Brent and the "ships" he creates. His sister and Andrew are little better.
I personally think that a big part of this is the fact that these kids probably know those sections are inappropriate. So watching them becomes this exclusive thing that promotes that "boys' club" mentality of joking with one of the guys. They think it makes them look cool that they're exposed to this stuff and fit in their mind can joke like a cool older guy. It adds this sense of obligation so that as he promotes any brand/channel thing, his subscribers are urged to participate/buy in and these kids have no idea how it affects their view on women, sexuality, what's appropriate in a normal setting It could easily be 100x more dangerous when you think of how that very format is what shane dawson did to put kids in horribly inappropriate situations and the worst od the worst, how onion buy literally groomed children with this format. They film kids content and throw in all these sexual references, normalizing that behavior, so it doesn't stand out as odd to a kid if they ever meet them irl. And to be fair, im not accusing brett rivera of doing that bc his videos meeting kids just look like regular kid stuff but the potential is very much there.
Late but I can definitely attest to the fact that watching bad content is definitely a status symbol at schools / among children. I remember at my school people were bragging about having seen people being shot online, and seeing something gory or inappropriate was celebrated like a badge of honour so much that I can totally see an impressionable kid diving down dark rabbitholes to get in on the popularity or even just be included.
THANK YOU . This has been on my mind for a long time and someone needed to say it. also did anyone else notice that in the screenshot of the “am I stronger than a 10 y old” vid the caption directly below says “if this video gets 500k likes I’ll ask Pierson to be my New Years KISS” and yeah he capitalized it not me 💀
As someone who had early access to the internet , I can confirm , I definitely would've watched that video The disgusting things on RU-vid have scarred my developing young brain for ever..
This is totally intentional to lure curious young teens and kids, and he knows that they are going to watch and get more views of it so he doesn’t care if those are children
I remember last year I visited some relatives in another state and while talking to my little cousins (5-10 years old) I was shocked by just how much adult topics reached them through the internet. Thankfully my aunts and uncles try to supervise them but they still knew shit like bo burnham's bezos song, watched the first episode of squid games, and had some awareness of sexual topics that I didn't reach til i was in middle school. I remember being wary of some child-aimed content when a cousin of mine went through a jake paul phase a few years back but brent rivera is another level. I remember watching some of his comedic skits around 7 years ago or so. I'm disgusted and disappointed at what he's come to, and I'm really scared for all these kids growing up on the internet
When I was younger I saw these kinds of videos, and even I knew it was weird and gross. Thankfully I understood it was weird so I just went outside and played with dolls and ate dirt like any growing child should.
ok but after the colleen balling we stuff, with her making super sexualized content for children and then ending up being a groomer, kinda makes me think the worst of brent
Reminds me of the channel that Ann Reardon talked about that tells (fake) true crime stories for children over really colorful footage of cake decorating. She made a good point that if a kid is using headphones, you'd have no clue the "baking video" was actually concerning stories with plots like "school girl agrees to meet up with pushy older online fan and he's super nice and solves all her problems," or "child abuse; that's it that's the whole story."
@@I_Dont_Believe_In_Salad does it matter? Homophobic people have the audacity to say gay people are groomers but are somehow ok with this stuff being on the internet
Nice editing in this video, I like how you used the background to show thumbnails! Works well because this stuff is nauseating and I def didn't want to see it full screen :D
i actually cant believe kids content nowadays, all i watched when i was growing up on youtube was cat videos and LPS videos and now youve got yters like guava juice and brent making absolute trash that gets tens of millions of views
I used to be a fan of him when I was like 10-11 , now I still watch his sister and some of his friends who are funnier ,I kind of got addicted to them since I was so used to him since I was a child . Though I now take these videos with a grain of salt ofc and only watch them if I’m like really bored
