Disused Railway Walk - The Cotgrave Colliery Branch in Nottinghamshire
Join me as i walk this long disused railway, starting in Radcliffe on Trent where the line branched off from the Nottingham to Grantham line before heading off towards the former site of Cotgrave Colliery closed since 1994.
I begin at sunrise by the nearby River Trent before heading to Rectory Viaduct & Cotgrave Viaduct in Radcliffe on Trent.
Picking up the disused railway trackbed, we walk the full route towards Cotgrave finding a few little relics on the way.

My dad worked at the pit in Cotgrave from 1966-71. We lived there and had family there for many years. On a Friday, dad would sometimes take me with him to collect his wages and we would walk from the village to the pit. I remember walking across the tracks and watching out for the wagons and loco’s on the move. We would collect his money, go to the canteen and get some milk and an iced bun. I was always very wary in the yard and never stood on the rails, always stepping over them.

Another great video from the territories of my youth. The "twin towers" of Cotgrave colliery were a major local landmark, looking very futuristic at the time. I once took a quick foray across the fields to look into the colliery and was amazed at the sidings full of coal wagons hiding behind the grassy banks. My grandparents used to park their caravan in the camping ground beside the embankment at Stragglethorpe. The collieries all looked so permanent at the time but now they are long gone with hardly a trace left. I am also long gone from South Nottinghamshire to the sunnier climes of Western Australia, but this video shows the old country at its lush and leafy best.

I first learned of Cotgrave in the early '90s, when I met a lady who lived in Radcliffe and was helping some of the miners who faced redundancy to find new work, and a new way of life. I guess the mine was winding down towards closure at that time.

After the pit buildings were demolished, I explored the site and the slag heaps. I remember a very large pool of water, vivid blue in colour, from all the chemicals in the soil. I rode my mountain bike around the huge derelict areas where the old shafts were sealed up and piles of rubble were all that remained of the buildings. They built a few small industrial units, landscaped what is now the country park, made footpaths on the old train line, and recently a housing estate was built. Some of which, rather worryingly, sit right over the old pit shafts. 😬

did you noticed the junk pile that had a bit of track in it, has been removed. i think there is picnic bench there now. and i am lucky enough to have camped at thorntons holt while the colliery was open, and seen trains running along the line, also after the colliery was shut down, i walked with my dad along the track while the tracks were still down and walked to the viaduct.

Hi Ant. Suggestion for you…how about following the disused Cranwell Line (known as The Cranwell Express) that ran from Sleaford in 1918 to what was then known as Royal Navy Air Station HMS Daedalus (for air ships) before the base was handed over to the newly formed Royal Air Force, becoming RAF Cranwell in 1918. It closed in 1956. It’s still easily traceable, with quite a few remnants. All the best, and good luck with all future videos…love ‘em! 👍

Greetings Ant! Just thought Id update you re the ELR (Engineers Line Reference) for that branch... CCB - Cotgrave Colliery Branch. CCB1 - Rectory Jn to Cotgrave Colliery West Junction. CCB2 - Cotgrave Colliery East Curve (to junction with Nottingham to Grantham (NOG) line. The number refers to the unique ID for the structure (bridge or tunnel/underpass).. Hope this helps! ;-) John

Just found your channel. Very interesting and happy route of colliery line now a cycle path. You might be interested in the Bingham Linear Walk which follows an old branch line. You can walk quite a way down it, and you get nice views across the Vale of Belvoir when you leave the cutting, after you get beyond the bypass tunnel. I think you can follow it as far as the River Smite. Would be interesting to know the history behinf this one. Presume it was another branch line to Melton Mowbray. Many thanks. I've watched and enjoyed may of the other recent videos and working my way through the older ones. Great stuff 😊

Another great video, Ant; there's nothing to beat very early on a summer's morning! My Dad worked at Cotgrave Colliery in the 1980's, and managed to get me a trip down, which was an experience. I also recall him being involved in some work on the branch line, to ensure it was up to scratch for a rail tour special!

Hi Ant. Really enjoying your videos. You asked for walk suggestions. Just done Sustrans route Fleddborough to Lincoln. Some railway infrastructure remains. Platforms & Trent viaduct and lovely river approach to Lincoln. About 12 or so miles (I cycled!) I expect you may have already done this? Another nearby option would be Torksey Viaduct. (Footpath only crossing only). On O.S. maps disused railway is marked as continuing but I have no idea what condition/access is. As roads have got busy around here Retford I have been exploring bridleways around here. Some cracking routes! Do occasional walks as well. Regards Paul.....keep up the good work!
