In this Disused Railway Walk & Explore video, i visit the long disused Calverton Colliery Branch Line in Nottinghamshire.
Walking the route from start to finish, starting on the outskirts of Nottingham before arriving at the wasteland that was once a bustling Colliery.

18:00 2,000 VWV wagons (Vented Van / Wide doors / Vacuum brake) wagons were built from 1962. 550 of them were converted from 1978 to 1982 into VEA (Vented Van / Mk5 / Airbrake), these were re-numbered 230000 to 230549 and all were repainted into Railfreight Red over grey livery but by 1990 they were being withdrawn. In 1990 25 of them became ZSA (departmental brake force / barrier wagons), so this wagon (233368) is one of those 25.

Walked up there only today. Shimmied down to the bottom of the cutting at Rigg lane and followed it up to the bridge over the Rufford road. It’s so overgrown - glad I dressed for the occasion

British rail organised a series of 3 trips to Calverton colliery and Cotgrave colliery in the early 90 I think and I was fortunate to get a ticket for one of these round trips. They were hauled by two class 20 locomotives top and tailing so I was Fortunate to be able to travel on two colliery branch lines now long gone.

I walked this line around 2010 when the sleepers and track still remained. It felt peaceful but sort of prohibited, I often revisit Bridge 3 and lay n the grills watching the sky and drinking tea. Not a good idea walking in summer as the nettles and brambles get n the way.

Really interesting video, well done. I knew one of the signalmen at Bestwood Park Junction box (where Moor Bridge tram stop is now), he used to let me visit the box and told me that the branch was originally double track. There was a signalbox and exchange sidings a little way down called Papplewick Junction. This gave access to the Great Northerns Leen Valley extension so Calverton could feed both the Midland and GN sides. The GN route was only regularly used once when there was a derailment at Bestwood Park Junction. The line was singled when MGR working of coal traffic became normal and extensive sorting sidings at Calverton were then removed. It would have been an idea to extend Nottinghams trams along this route to a park and ride somewhere in the A60 or A614 area to relieve some of the traffic coming over Redhill into Arnold and Sherwood.

Used to hear these trains all the time when I stayed with me grandparents in Papplewick. They used to rumble for ages. Before the Robin Hood line reopened me and me Grandpa would walk from Hucknall to Linby along the line. We only ever walked about 100m on this line when it were disused. Very fond memories.

Just done this full walk. One fallen tree was an obstacle and then the bramble patch was tight. Wear really good boots, mine got water logged, takes about 3 hrs from tescos in bulwell to the pitt at Calverton was a 21k round trip. There was a fence at the other end so has to climb out of the siding. Thanks for inspiring me though with this video!

It's certainly a long walk i remember at the time thinking maybe a 4 hour return trip it took almost 6 i think. Not one i fancy doing again anytine soon. Thankyou for watching :)

, My late grandfather's final colliery. He retired from Calverton around 1975. I remember seeing the colliery and the trains when we visited.

Ant, thanks again for another great video. The things sticking out of the bridge at Papplewick are smoke deflectors, one above each running line. They'd prevent damage to the bridge through erosion and soot build up (and blasting anyone who happened to be peering over the bridge parapet at the time :-). The ZSA on the box van/wagon is the TOPS computer reference that would have been allocated to the wagon in the 1970s. It was probably departmental wagon. The signal is of a type found at collieries to control the train's approach and movement through the coal loader.

You're back on form with a wealth of railway relics!!!! Just off to look at the photos, isn't it great that these guys saw the photo opportunity and recorded what is now gone and long forgotten. Good to see a Grid, one of the best sounds I've ever heard when pulling 36+ aggregate wagons. Nice one, Ant👍👍👍👍

Thanks for this one, Ant... been looking forwards to it! My Dad worked at Calverton in the 1970's and took me down a few times. Your delivery of the comment about the carrots made me laugh... the mind boggles as to why they were there!

Hi I was watching the one on the calverton line last name ght it was very good I'm realy interested in old railways of Nottingham and other parts of England I find it very interesting I like the one were there's a load of chucking coupes in the tunnell carry on with the good work way wife likes your programme as well from Gerald and sue take care

That was a bit of a battle in places, but well worth it, especially when you find a bit of railway history such as the wagon. I love it when you are out on a walk and a piece of the railway pops up, it makes the whole process come together brilliantly. When I was out the other day around my village I couldn't believe what I kept finding, I hope you enjoyed the photos.

I purposly left this one for the winter as i imagine its a bit of a beast to walk from now until late in the year. The wagon was amazing. Youre pictures are really good as i have hardly any idea about what exists in the Lincolnshre area so it's nice to see

When the lockdown restrictions are eased a bit I've planned to walk the old Grimsby to Louth line, I'm going to start in Louth at the old station and go as far as the steam railway at Ludborough for the first stint. There are some points of interest along the route which will be snapped and published, rest assured!!

Love it; I did half of the walk, but in reverse, back in 2005 (ish,) and a lot of the track was still down. Bloomin' hard work trying to walk on heavy ballast and track :)

I saw some track still down in early 2009 near to the colliery site, although some of it by the looks of it had been removed or stolen. It was on concrete sleepers. Great informative video. I used to pass Calverton frequently on my way down south and was interested on its history. Im sure I read somewhere the branch was going to be used as a test track at one time.

I made the trek to stand on top of bridge number 9 about 18 months ago. I didn't do as much of a walk as you did but I parked up at Blidworth woods and went from there. It was very hard going and took me a while to actually locate where the line has been. Extremely over grown with brambles and my legs were shredded even through my trousers!

Hello 😀 That last mile was rather bad. It would be impossible I imagine from around April until late in the year. I'm sure the council purchased the entire line but never went further than what they have. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂

i think the signal post, getting near to Calverton Colliery is just about visible in Duncan's photograph taken from the train. I actually like these long forgotten, overgrown paths, good for nature and proper walkers, if they are cleared they become much less interesting and possibly less appeal to explore them, just my thoughts. I love these walks, the photography and drone footage and the pics from back in the day and a few finds, it's great stuff, thanks for your efforts

Great video. A mixture of flat bottom and bullheaded rail judging by the fittings. Stuck out bits off the bridge may be smoke deflectors.

Sometime during the eighties I went on a special excursion down this line right into the colliery sidings and under the coal loading hoppers with very little clearance between the concrete pillars and the sides of the coach, certainly the last and only visit by a passenger train to my knowledge, I will have to ask any of the group of us that went if they have any photographs of the day.

Great video, I walked this from Moor Road to the A60 in January. You were wondering when the track was lifted. It was lifted between the pit site and the A614 very soon after closure, but not by Network Rail, it just disappeared... The rest of it was lifted when you said, around 2011 when the lines were sold to Notts. CC. I wonder if the stretch from Moor Road to Calvo will ever be converted to pathway like the short section is from Mill Lakes?

the rails where down for a long while up to the 614, the only section that went missing was on winbush lane where the line was level with the road approaching the 614, there was an old sofa that was dumped there on the line, i made good use of a few times to have a rest and a beer, before heading to calvo.

Nice video. I seem to recall in the 1990s that Railscene Video did a cab ride from Coalville to Calverton. If I remember right it was filmed on board a rail tour from the cab of a class 56. Worth a look if you can track copy down....

Hi Ant. Quite likely that it was built for double track but never was, but it's possible. My local line, the Manchester and Milford, was built along its entire length (what was built of it! 😉 😂 ) for double track, but never was. Nice enjoyable walk, and a lovely place to visit. All overbridges had smoke deflectors which later would serve as diesel fume deflectors.

Despite looking to be concrete, these date back to steam days. They're just what Ant thought at first, deflectors, known as smoke baffles. They would be placed directly above the running lines, meant to protect anyone/anything on the bridge from smoke/steam/exhaust from passing locomotives. There would just be one on a single track, two on a double, and so on. They can sometimes still be seen on station footbridges of a certain age but new bridges don't get them.😁

Walked down here the other day from Hucknall, safe to say walking 4 miles on railway ballast is very hard work was hoping to see some tracks or something but there was absolutely nothing 😂

It is such a shame these old lines have been left to go back to nature, they make great walking and cycle areas, in this lockdown we are experiencing it would of been ideal for familys to take kids out for their exercise and to learn about history and nature at the same time.

I'm a little confused about where the line joins the main line. The map shows the line to pass to the North of Bestwood Colliery which makes me think that the map is not accurate. Although access is bocked beyond the bottom of Wigwam Lane, the line appears to head towards Butlers Hill which is just south of Hucknall no. 2 Colliery. This is nowhere near Bestwood and furthermore, it would make no sense for the line to pass north of Bestwood. The beginning of the video is rather vague and gives no explanation of how the Calverton line meets the main line to take the coal to Ratcliffe on Soar power station. This is really the most interesting part of the line and deserves more investigation. Otherwise another well produced video. Looking forward to the next.

Thanks for this funny enough I walked Bestwood Village to Bridge 3 yesterday and didn't think you could go further because of the fence !! How far is the walk in total and how long did it take to finish ?

Hello I believe it's was roughly 6 miles if I remember. I think if the bridge had been properly fenced still, it was super easy to get back up the other side. It's a good little route. Thanks for watching 🙂

It's such a shame and loss as I live in Calverton I have walked the line dam shame they cud off been used for the trams park and ride all gone because of Maggie thatcher all them jobs gone 😭😭😭😭😭

14:50 at that location you're not far from the memorial to the crew of The Fairy Battle, which crashed in 1940. Killing its 3 Polish occupants.
